kind of surprised they didn't take simms since he at least may have an upside while harrington is just awful.

The Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms with quarterback Joey Harrington, who was released Friday by the Atlanta Falcons.

Due to the current uncertainty with their quarterbacks, the Ravens brought in Harrington, Chris Simms (released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Todd Bouman (released by the Jaguars) for workouts Monday and decided to sign Harrington because he has the most recent playing experience.

Troy Smith and Kyle Boller have been sidelined this preseason due to injury and illness. Smith, scheduled to start the third preseason game, has a viral infection and was hospitalized from Thursday to Sunday. Smith has also lost a considerable amount of weight.

Boller is battling an injury to his throwing shoulder and still hasn't been cleared to practice or play. The Ravens also have rookie Joe Flacco and Casey Bramlet on the roster.

Flacco, the Ravens' No. 1 pick in this year's draft from Delaware, was selected by head coach John Harbaugh Monday to start in their season opener against the Bengals.

"It wouldn't be realistic to have one of those two guys [Smith and Boller] as a starter, for sure. If they can back up, I think that would be an upset," Harbaugh said.

After two preseason games, Harbaugh essentially eliminated Flacco in what began as a three-way competition to be Baltimore's starting quarterback. The plan was to start Smith in the third game, against the St. Louis Rams, then take a look at Boller.

But neither Smith nor Boller was available to play against the Rams or the preseason finale against Atlanta. Flacco started both games and played well enough to maintain the role in the opener.

"This is what I wanted all along," Flacco said. "Things happen funny. I've gotten my opportunity, and now it's up to me to go out there and play."

Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I didn't realize he got released from Atlanta. I always thought he would turn out to be a good QB. Those Lions teams were so bad though and he just never developed.

how the fuck does Harrington still land jobs with other teams??!! Haven't these teams watched him on tape?...do they see his record as a starter??

I had respect for Ozzie Newsome till this happened.

Ray Lewis must've downed a gallon of Pepto Bismal when he found this out

Why is that? He did win a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer as the starter!! Plus, it looks like Flacco will be their starter.

he did win a super bowl...but Ray Ray is getting a little LONG in the tooth...and so is the rest of that defense. I don't think they could carry a team as effective as they did when they won the Super Bowl with Dilfer.

fuck i know...i remember how dominating that defense was...you could've stuck me behind center that year for the Ravens...and they still would've won

And i couldn't hit the red side of a barn with my football throws.

You could pick either them or the 85 Bears as the best ever. I personally think it's a toss up.

Chicago shutting out NYG and the LA Rams in the playoffs is amazing, but they definitely had the Home field advantage.

Baltimore had one home game and two on the road for the playoffs and only gave up 1 TD.

the 85' Bears also had the elements on their side during their playoff run. It's tough to go into Chi-town, to play that defense and mother nature at the same time.
