I don't know what to think about this. I trust Rex with my heart and soul but I'm gonna need to see Vernon prove it before I believe a single word of this.
Hey, some people said he's a project. Entering his third year, you never know. He could still be a useful player. Anything beyond that is gravy.
Yes, I believe what Rex meant when he said "That's three practices in a row where he would have had a sack."
He's just trying to build up his confidence in the hope the guy gives us something. Could you imagine if we get Gholston to play like a 1st rounder, that would be sick. Yeah I know, what the hell, I can dream
Ok so Vernon Gholston would (will?) be a hell of a flag football player. That still leaves us where we were last season with Ryan praising him to the rafters and still no NFL sacks on the log. The Jets should probably just admit he's not a fit for the 3-4 and move on at this point. It's a painful thing to do but to give an example: does anybody think the Jets 3-4 would be better right now with Jonathan Vilma in it in place of Bart Scott? Vilma is 10x the player Gholston is ever likely to be.
Gholston wasnt who I wanted but I held out hope with reservation. He's a bust at LB'er but I've been holding out hope on what I call "The Calvin Pace Redemption Rate" Pace blew dong until his contract year. about 3 or 4 years of mediocrity in ARI before becoming one of the stalwarts of our LB corps. Gholston lacks separation technique, and just downright football instincts. that being said its angry to watch him cause you see someone so damn fast and strong push people around, yet never separate when the balls coming towards him and even take poor angles in pursuit. I love the idea of him getting back in the trenches, hes quick off the snap and can bullrush, yes the flaws in his game pretty much rule him out as ever being a true impact player, but the 2 things he does well will help push the pocket and re-direct playside if he actually develops as a DE under Rex. best case scenario, he becomes a solid role player who makes those aound him better worst case, he sucks it up another year and woody pays him to leave. not much different than most teams, but I'll hold out because i think he might be at least solid at DL rotation. we'll see, I'll give up ANY expectations if he does next to nothing for another consecutive year.
he will be mediorce as a 3/4 end at best. he is too small. when he gets released he will go to 4/3 team and do well as a 4/3 end because that is what he is built for.
Thankfully this defense is good enough to allow VG to find his niche. They obviously think he has something to contribute or i'm sure they would have taken advantage of the uncapped season to rid themselves of what is probably the biggest draft blunder in team history.
I'm not sure what else there is to day about The Ghost except like was already mentioned, even if we get one sack and a dozen QB pressures, that's still a quantum leap over what we've gotten so far. Besides, the better he does, the higher his value during the offseason if we decide to unload him.
He's surrounded by some of the best defensive players and minds in the country, so something had to have rubbed off on him. If the most we get is a serviceable backup, then I'll be happy.
Gholston is a beast, i don't know why alot of you are so down on him. This is his 3rd year, give him a chance.
He was a beast at Ohio State and a true workout warrior. Plus rarely do you see top LB prospects turn out to be busts. We'll gladly take him in Buffalo if you guys cut him
In 2 years the ghost has done nothing. No sacks. This is the last year he's here i'm guessing so he better prove himself. If he sucks again I'll trade you him for a pack of gum and even then you'd be getting fleeced.
