you can't gauge a guy on one play...

but that penalty on Brees in the Playoffs, that almost cost us the game, is the direct antithesis of Mangini/BB/Parcells coaching.

i don't know if it's Barton's attitude or play (i.e. not fitting the scheme), but this should be interesting to follow.

    cheers

i've been saying this all the while -- not that Smith will beat out Coleman, because i said this before Smith was even drafted -- but that Coleman isn't as good as a lot of people say.

he had a very good rookie year, especially for a R5 pick, but he's not very fast, which leads to him being out of position (i.e. on deep balls); and he makes more mistakes than you'd like to see from a S, one of the most important positions on Defense.

    cheers

Very interesting look into Cimini's early impressions of the Mangini Jets. It seems somewhat pessimistic, however I guess year one of a rebuilding effort always looks sort of gray.

    totally agree.

it seems like he didn't have anything good to say about anyone.

the part about Cotchery kinda annoyed me because I watched a lot of his games at State (I went to school in NC and still love here because I just recently graduated) and he appears to have enough potential to be a No. 2 WR. but i guess we'll see.

    cheers

Why? Because Cimini said so???? Since when did his opinion actually count for anything?

Thank you for posting the chat. Cimini appears to be quite realistic with what Man & Tan have done. He also crashes some love affairs between board members & players on this board

He also talks out of his ass considering he's only seen 1 practice. Nothing is worse than a journalist who thinks he's a football scout, and believes it's impossible to answer a question "I do not know" when he really does not know.

Cimini can be right. I do not know that, but I also know he has no idea either and is just talking out of his ass. He's seen 90 minutes of practice and he's already made judgements.

Uhm. What exactly happened to Ray Lewis in Baltimore in 2003?

Playing the 3-4, Ray Lewis continued being a stud. This is just Cimini talking out of his ass.

    yeah, that part confused me.

i thought playing in the 3-4, Ray Lewis went off and even won Superbowl MVP.

    cheers

He even won the defensive player of the year award that year. Cimini sure talks a lot of shit from time to time.

I can't speak to Cimini's intelligence or why he is employed by the Daily News, but don't forget that journalism is a for-profit business. And before you start refuting that statement, I'll tell you that I worked right out of college as a writer for a news service. I know how it works, I've seen why editorial decisions are made and their consequences.

A sports journalist who listed just the facts ("Pennington threw 15 balls in the first two minutes of practice, completed 14, then took off two plays. Drank a cup of water. Spent two minutes speaking with Mangini. Rebuckled his helmet....") wouldn't sell as many papers as someone who wrote "Pennington's first six passes didn't travel as far as they are capable of going, leading to speculation his arm is still damaged and he may not be ready for the start of training camp." The latter statement, while sexier, is speculation and conjecture.

Maybe Pennington was working on short passes solely that day, or that session. Maybe the receivers were working on short routes or practicing their technique to get off the line, and the quarterbacks were just there to throw the ball. If you don't think Rich Cimini has an agenda -- i.e., to be read -- then you don't understand how the economics of his business work or the incentives that he works under as a reporter.

Because he has readership.. The Daily News could not care less if he's right, as long as people read the articles. He does get some inside info, but I certainly wouldn't count on him for player evaluatioins.

Actually if you put it down on paper what he said is quite realistic at least IMHO. I think he went overboard on the Brick/Mangold thing but again that is my HO. Also, if he embrassed the paper by being incorrect time after time as you laid out the readers would drop off his bandwagon & the paper would axe him so he has to be considered by his readers & his higher managment to be qualified to be writing what he writes.
