Not sure who's been keeping up with the combine but this guy shows some tremendous footwork and fluidity in the hips for a bigger guy. This draft class is so deep at DB, I really hope we can fix our secondary for the future. Solid numbers all around but the 40 time really stands out. Can't teach speed. 2017 NFL Combine 40 YARD DASH: 4.38 SEC BENCH PRESS: 17 REPS VERTICAL JUMP: 38.5 INCH BROAD JUMP: 132.0 INCH 3 CONE DRILL: 6.87 SEC 20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.14 SEC 60 YARD SHUTTLE: 11.62 SEC
He played CB at UCF. With his size at 6'1" 200lbs I would like to rotate him back to FS and let him ballhawk with his 4.3 speed. His combine weight was 198lbs so I'd say he'd probably even bulk to 215ish easy.
Nfldraftscout.com has him as the #22 DB with a round 5 projection. Has good size and numbers plus he broke up 16 passes last year with 4 picks. I like the idea of moving him to FS.
Let's just say that we draft both Shaquill Griffin AND Obi Melifonwu. Calvin Pryor is our stating SS. Who plays FS? Does the other guy start at CB, nickel dime? If you are coaching the Jets secondary what would you do with this talent?
"Shaq" has the size to play safety and if he picks up on the switch fairly easy and can learn to play in space I say there's our FS right there. If not maybe he's better suited to stay at CB and we could use help at both positions so I say its a win either way. I also support picking up Micah Hyde in FA who can play either FS or CB. As I've stated in other threads I like Hyde's play but I also like the fact that his flexibility allows for certain gambles in areas to experiment with players or not feel pressured into picking a lesser FS or CB in the draft due to need, but go BPA at CB or FS. That alone makes him more valuable than his level of play IMO.
Really like this guy but it looks like so did the Seahawks as he was selected 3rd round 90th overall. I guess he wasn't as much of a hidden gem as I thought he was. I think a few other paid attention to his combine workout as well.
