Looking to spark some new debate.

What do you think we should do with Shaun Ellis aka The Big Kat? He is one of my favorite All Time Jets players, and I feel while he may have lost a step he is an invaluable piece to our defense. However the price for the future production may not equal up. I would love for us to bring him back so he can retire as a Jet, I just don't see it being practical.

    What are your thoughts?

I'd love to bring him back. He was still very productive last year for a 3-4 DE and he played injured most of the year. The guy needs to earn a ring.

Now it's hard to understand exactly what players mean when they say "There is no other place I want to go/play. I love being here." But Ellis did say this toward the end of the year in an interview.

Factor in his age, and I would say this would not be a major issue to sign him to a cheap year, or two extension.

He is old as fuck though, and obviously need to bring somebody young in for the 2011 season with Ellis coming back.

What week did he get hurt? Judging by his game stats it looks like Ellis came out blazing in the beginning of the season.

Wouldn't we all like to be in a career with early 30's is considered "old" as you near the point where retirement is practically forced upon you?

Ellis can still be effective if Pettine puts him in a DL rotation next year. I think his days as an every down starter have diminished.

He was the best player on the DL last year. Sure they need youth there, but at the right number he will be back.

I love Ellis and no matter when he is sent packing it will be a sad day for a lot of us. I agree with MB about Ellis being used in a rotation. Nobody can play forever so getting some new blood at the D-end would of course be a good idea. That said bring the Big Kat back for one more year.

    Agreed.

Pryce is a decent player and he's 36. I have confidence Ellis is still servicable for depth for another 2 or 3 years on a rotation basis.

If he is willing to take a short term smaller deal I can see him back but I think they want to get younger in certain positions and that is one of them. I want Shaun back, he should never wear another uniform but I won't be suprised at all if he is not here. It's unfortunate but he is way down the list of re-signing priorities this offseason.

i think we find a way to keep ellis someway

i dont think many teams are gonna overpay for him and he has more value to the jets then anything, only team that i could see giving us trouble is NE with ellis but even then belicheat isnt gonna throw huge money at a 30+ end who is on the downside

The problem with this debate for me is, I haven't heard anything about what type of contract he's seeking. My vote is definitely a keep him, but if he's going to want some unrealistic pipe dream contract, then no. But it's hard to say what to do until we know (or have some idea) what he wants. IMO anyway.

This kind of discussion always implies that money is part of the analysis. It always is. Nobody in the team is worth too much money - it's a truism.

Unless and until we get to talk about some specific demands that seem too high, I think it best to assume for discussion's sake that a deal can be worked out. The real question is whether the player is serviceable.

Now of course if hte player is already on the roster under contract and the contract number is way too high going forward, we can talk about that. And to some extent that is a factor with Ellis. But he's indirectly expressed a willingness to cut a deal, so his current number is not a hard one going forward. Imo.

I would love to bring him back, but I doubt we have the resources to meet his financial demands. Plus, he needs to be healthy.

Well, there is now question on what I think.. look at my avatar.. One of my favorites since back in the day.. But for whats best for the team, I honestly think he should come back.. He played good most of the season, and to me, was a huuuuuge part, if not the main part, we rattled Brady in the AFCDG.

    Has to retire a Jet.

Needs to come back. Has at least 1 more year in him health wise, has many years spirit wise.

I would love Ellis to come back if he would take a 2 mill a year or less contract. Maybe 2 years 3 million plus 2 million in incentives something like that could be good. I would love to see him come back cheap but if he wants money I have no problem cutting him and finding another Devito type player to fill his spot.

I would love to have the Big Kat back under the right deal. He's made plenty of money in his career, hopefully no team is willing to throw big bucks at him on the free agent market and if all things are close he will stay here for another year.

My worry is that Ellis thinks he has a few years left in him and deserves a 3 year deal or so, whereas the Jets would probably only want him back for another year while they groom his replacement. I think Ellis' versatility along the whole line is big for the defense and having him back would be great. That being said, I think DE could be a position the Jets are looking to go cheap on. I wouldn't be surprised to see them lowball Ellis and watch him walk away.. And then I also wouldn't be surprised to see Trevor Pryce come back at the end of training camp and be the 1 year veteran stopgap guy at DE rotating with youngsters like Pitoitua, Dixon, Gilbert, rookie, whoever.

Big Kat brings it hard every snap - He still has it, as illustrated by the NE playoff game - It may not be as consistent as it once was, but it only takes 1 big play to change the outcome of a game.

Bring him back and let the man retire where he belongs.

Ellis can still be productive & came up huge in the NE playoff game. Obviously, it comes down to how much $$ he wants but I'm really hoping he'll stick around for at least one more year. He's a Jet.
