Okay, we only have a few hours before Rex officially announces our initial cuts, but as always, there will then be a lot of maneuvering in the next week. So let's hear your SURPRISE predictions of who won't be on the 53 for the first game. Mine? 1. Brad Smith/Wallace Wright...I just have a feeling one of these guys is a goner. With the emergence of Carroll last year on ST, how many limited production "gunner" WRs do we need? If pushed I say Wright is gone, but I'm not sure how much of a fan Rex is of the trick plays--Smith's main contribution. Thus my including him. Either way, If we bring in another WR off waivers or in a deal, one of these two goes. 2. Larry Izzo...This would really surprise me, but I just haven't seen his ST greatness thus far. Whether Westhoff has found him to be what he had hoped may determine his fate. The other consideration is how Izzo compares to other people Westhoff really wants almost exclusively for ST.
Add Pouha to my list. Unlikely I know, but it would surprise. He's never developed to an above average player in my mind, and I think so good DL are goning to shake loose from other teams.
Is anyone really going to be surprised if we cut the 34 year old, undersized linebacker who only plays ST?
I'd say either Larry Izzo or Wallace Wright (unfortunately)... Honestly, I'm not expecting any big surprises...
They have to be given to the league by 6:00. Cimini or someone wrote earlier that Rex had a presser scheduled "this afternoon" to announce them, but I don't know the specific time of the presser.
Thus the "surprise"... My thinking on this one was that A) Rex has little invested in some of these guys B) Pouha has done little historically or this PS to stand out C) Green has looked much better, albeit against 2nd and 3rd teamers D) Ryan has been around a long time and some vet he has worked with or admired from afar could shake loose somewhere else. He might prefer one of "his guys" (to use the old Parcells phrase) to a non-descript veteran who has never really developed into anything special. That said, as mentioned, it would still be a surprise.
Yeah, personally I'm really shocked. I didn't include him on my list in part because I didn't think he would be cut. I still haven't seen a source for this though, except Petro. I'm kinda hoping he's wrong, but... And for those who care, Rex's presser is scheduled for 4:30 according to Cimini. Sometimes the Jets Official webpage carries them live. At the very least the video will be up there within the hour.
