Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira may miss games to be with wife for birth of child

NEW YORK -- The Yankees may be without first baseman Mark Teixeira for the start of the team's six-game road trip because he plans to be with his wife for the birth of their child.

While the rest of his teammates left Yankee Stadium following Monday's 2-1 loss to the Red Sox headed for a charter flight to Arlington, Tex., Teixeira stayed behind in New York. The team gave permission for Teixeira to join his wife, whose due date is Tuesday.

Teixeira said he was unsure how many games -- if any -- he would miss.

"This is not an exact science," Teixeira said.

The Yankees open a two-game series against the Rangers on Tuesday and fly to Kansas City for a four-game set that begins on Thursday.

"We'll address it when it happens," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

After a prolonged slump that marred most of his first half, Teixeira has been the Yankees' most productive hitter in the second half. Since the break, Teixeira is hitting .276 with nine homers and 25 RBI. Teixeira hit his 26th home run of the season on Monday in the Yankees' 2-1 loss to the Red Sox.

The Yankees would miss the switch-hitting Teixeira in the middle of the order, especially with the team expected to face three more left-handers in the next three days.

Lance Berkman was brought in partly because of his ability to spell Teixeira at first base. But left-handers have held the switch-hitting Berkman to a .185 average, and the Yankees have limited his at-bats against them.

That guy needs to get his priorities straight. For $20 million a year, he can pay to have the thng filmed in 3-D on a live feed. It'd be just like being there.
