Listening to Espn radio, Michael Smith reported that the Jets offered Samuel the richest contract for a defensive player in NFL history, higher then that given to Dwight Freeney, but Samuel rejected it because of his wanting to play in Philadelphia.

Whew wow If the jets actually signed him and that too to the richest defensive contract in history, I would've fainted.

That seems a little off. I know Michael Smith is usually pretty reliable but Asante might be one of the greediest players in the league. I can't see him turning down any money. Ever.

But if it is true, definitely glad he turned it down.

hes a very good player. but not worth the contract the eagles threw at him let alone anything more than that.

id go off my rocker if we made him the highest paid defensive player

I'd rather have the guy he's replacing in Philly. Any Lito news?

Asante Samuel has not earned the right to be the highest paid defensive player in history. Im very happy he declined. Mangini seems to put way to much stock in players he used to know.

Belly probably made Asante pinky swear to not go to the Jets then changed his mind and told him 'You know what? I don't want to even see you in the AFC. If I see you again it will be in the Super Bowl.' That's the only scenario I see.

I think it's clear that Asante wanted to play in Philly and if what Michael Smith reported is true Asante is not worth the highest salary in the league for a def player. I don't think he will be as effective in the Philadelphia defense as he was in the Pats-Cheat system.

Yeah, and honestly, Michael Smith is one of my favorite reporters (yikes...I know he's a Boston jackass) but he's still class. However, his credibility is questionable as of late: reporting Faneca signing a contract basically 24 hours too early.

    I smell bullsh!t.

Considering our guy, Revis is better than him at this moment, I'm thrilled we didn't waste it on him.

Obviously false. He only chose us because of our spending spree so far.

Michael Smith is supposedly a close friend of Mangini's...

I think that Faneca stipulated that he wanted to make the announcement, and that's why the NYJ denied everything until Faneca broke his silence.

There were a lot of reports that he was going to hold a press conference as well that were uh pre-mature...

If this story is true, then the Eagles were bid up, using the NYJ's proposal, by Samuel who was going to go to play with them anyway...what a guy!
