August 2, 2007 Green vs. White By Tom Rock It?s late. It?s been a long, hot day. And we just came in from the nearly three-hour practice behind the big green curtain in which the Jets had a little green-white scrimmage. While most of it was mundane and hard to follow since Mangini toyed with the scenarios so often, there were some flashes. Leon Washington busted loose for a 57-yard zig-zagging run on the first drive for the white team. Rashad Washington crushed Leon Washington on third-and-short inside the 5 by timing a blitz. Chad Pennington hit L.Coles for a pass of about 55 yards that brought the ball to the 1, where Thomas Jones ran it in from a play later. On the flip side of success, the green team lost some momentum when a shotgun snap to Chad Pennington went wide and resulted in a safety. And in a good news/bad news item, Pennington was off-target on a Hail Mary bomb at the end of one scenario, but he did so by overthrowing the end zone. Then, there was the fireworks portion of the night when LB Cody Spencer and TE Joe Kowalewski got tangled up in some serious fisticuffs. This wasn?t your usual football tango with lots of grabbing and shoving. These guys were throwing punches. Thank you, Teddy Atlas! Now, JoeKo has the advantage in the tale of the tape. He?s listed at 6-4, 250 compared to Spencer, who is 6-2, 245. But Spencer is a big, strong dude with a lot of that good ol? boy Texas dust still on his boots. Spencer seemed to get the best of Joe, from the bad streets of upstate Warners. In fact, it was Baby Face Kowalewski who had his helmet come off in the altercation thanks to a flurry of uppercuts. Spencer, for what it?s worth, stayed in the game. That was the first training camp fight not only of this training camp, but of Mangini's tenure. At least, it's the only one we know about. A few other notes before we shut down for the night: Don?t bother coming out to see the practice scheduled for Friday. Mangini cancelled it. They?ll be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday and at the undisclosed location on Sunday. I could tell you, but they?d have to kill me. David Barrett, who was shaken up in the morning practice, was on the field for the scrimmage. He and L.Coles continue to have some of the better battles of training camp. OL Ed Blanton, who was in the injury zone yesterday, was waived today. That leaves starting RT Anthony Clement as the tallest Jet on the roster. Congratulations, Anthony! And today was Kerry Rhodes? birthday. To celebrate he wore his new age on his jersey: 25. If you?re looking for a gift for Kerry, try a new pair of practice shoes. The ones he was wearing this morning each had gaping holes in the toes.

Interesting article on the fight. Not a good thing in camp, but at least we know both players arent' whimps. Also, it's good to hear Barrett was back practicing and isn't injured.
