After 2 games I've had enough of this trifling unit already!

Aaron Glenn, former CB, NY Jets and a defensive coach, last seen as DC of the Lions currently HC of the Jets
Steve Wilks, DC and has been a coach of defense, in the NFL, since 2006

Can someone please tell me what in the steaming pile of shit is wrong with this unit? I'm not talking talent. There's enough talent, at each level, to field a competitive defense. Some would say there is enough talent to be at least top 10, depending upon who you talk to, but I simply don't see it. Not from a talent perspective but from an execution perspective. You can have all the talent in the world but if you have 11 chickens running around with their heads cut off you got nothing!

Players CONSTANTLY out of position. Players CONSTANTLY over pursuing. Players CONSTANTLY not knowing their assignments. And the TACKLING... What the colossal fuck is going on with the TACKLING? Someone posted in another thread that there was a missed tackle on every single play of the Bills game. Now, that is an exaggeration but I went back and they are not far from wrong. There was a missed tackle on 93% of the defensive snaps and that is, in a single fucking word, UNACCEPTABLE!!!

I don't care what era we live in. I don't care if these kids have 50 social media accounts and nine "brands" to their name. If I'm Aaron Glenn I drop the edict, one more bullshit showboat dance, or whatever the fuck they are calling it these days, after a simple tackle, I'm putting your ass on the pine for a series or two. They can join Clemons as he sits his customary series or two for committing yet another stupid ass penalty. I'm done. I've had enough and my eyes can't take anymore. I'm sick of these prima donna assholes, getting blown apart by 2 scores or more, dancing after a rudimentary tackle. Or worse, after 3 people have fucking whiffed their tackling assignment and "you" had to run someone down. It's over.

I don't want to hear the bullshit about stifling someone's "creativity" or whatever bullshit excuse they are using to justify their useless turd ridden dances. Football is like the Military, not like an afternoon on the quad at "Jerkwater U." You want "individuality" and to express yourself, go write a fucking song and then show up at the Grammy's half naked. This is football jack!! Act like you've played the game before instead of trying to get your "grill" laden mug on Sportscenter. If Aaron Glenn nor Steve Wilks can figure out how to teach these non-tackling prima donna's how to tackle then maybe they should just put on tapes of L.T. or Ray Lewis. Brian Urlacher would be a good one. Fuck... I've had enough. The Offense may be putrid but there is Z-E-R-O excuse for this Defense considering who the fuck is in charge.

    Climbing off my soapbox.

If you go back to this thread https://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/your-head-coach-choices-for-2025.100428/ and search for my posts (can't quote them because the thread is locked), I said that Glenn's defenses in Detroit were nothing special, and the Lions were good in spite of him, not because of him. For all of Bowles and Saleh's faults as head coaches, they both knew how to coach a good defense. Glenn did not.

Yah…the one that gets me every time is when a defender makes a tackle and he starts wagging his finger like no no no!

That for some reason irritates the hell out me

The worst of course was Kyle Wilson who would be trailing a receiver by 2 yards and then when the QB overthrows the receiver Wilson would act like he did something and give the NO sign…

    Hate that shit

I just did a cursory look at last seasons Lions schedule and I can sort of glimpse what you are saying. Having said that, though, Wilks is the DC. He's a seasoned DC and shouldn't NEED Glenn to have input. Wilks is the kind of guy you call when you have just hired an OFFENSIVE minded HC. Glenn being a DC on the Lions is almost a shoulder shrug moment but I feel what you are laying down there. I wondered why Shanahan fired Wilks, literally just after the Super Bowl, and I'm beginning to understand why. Which drags my mind down another avenue.... Why in the flaming bag of turds did Glenn pick a DC that can't even hold onto a DC job on a team that was just IN a Super Bowl? So many different choices. Then again, that's just me thinking "out loud."

Glenn was a trash DC coordinator in Detroit what made you think the defense would play well under his leadership? It's evidently now apperent that Saleh was the only one holding this defense together, ever since he got fired in the middle off the season which was another brilliant move by dumbass Woody they fell apart.

it was a personality thing period. Shanahan wants a cheerleader like Saleh. Wilks got a bad deal in San Fran.

I curious to know what you all think of Sherwood performance to date. He is supposed to be the leader of the D and seal the middle lanes but IMO he has been really a non entity allowing massive gaps in that part of the field. Thoughts?

In all honesty, I haven't seen much of the 2 games this season. However, I've always said it's unwise to put a 214 lb LB in the middle of the D. He was one of the NFL leaders in tackles last year but there's a difference in tackling at the line of scrimmage and 5 yards beyond and I think the majority of his hits were of the latter.

It's a lot easier to play defense when you have a lead as opposed to playing catchup the whole game as the Jets have done the last 10 or so years. Therefore, I think a lot of the defensive woes can be laid at the feet of a weak offense. Saleh and Glenn both came from teams that had very good offenses.

The only part I don't agree with is the assessment of the Jets defensive talent (players). Other than Quinnen W. and Sauce and maybe M.Carter there's not a player on the Jets D who is clearly above average at their position. And most are well below average starters. And I would classify the Jets LBs and safeties as clearly below NFL average starters. I've been saying this since the offseason- this is not new. The Jets "great" D season of 2 years ago was an outlier largely because of the schedule and timing of games and no serious D injuries (if I remember correctly the Jets D had fewer games lost by starters than any D in the NFL that season). Other than that the D has never really been that great and last year it was similarly awful.
