I haven't started a thread in years, but I'd like to hear others opinions on this topic. A lot of us wanted to see the Jets address their front 7 (especially OLB & DE). Since we did not do that, I can only assume the CS is comfortable with the guys we currently have in those roles. Leaving ILB out since we obviously have 2 studs there, here's the breakdown of the incumbants at the following positions: DT, DE & OLB. My question is, what do you think of the less heralded guys? Do we have our next DE/OLB on the roster now? DT: (only 2 true 3-4 DTs on the roster) Jenkins - obviously the man when healthy, although he is rarely healthy late in the season and getting older Pouha - filled in very will when Jenkins went out DE: Ellis - still productive but getting old Wright - just signed him... will he start? Can we expect M. Douglas version 2.0? Devito & Pitoitua - big questions for me here. Does the CS think 1 (or both) of these guys can be more then just rotational players? Is one the Ellis heir apparent? (Steinkuhler & Kroul are also on the roster - but don't think either saw the field) OLB: Thomas & Pace - you know what you've got here. Taylor - 1 year solution as situational pass rusher Westerman - Rex has a track record for developing LB talent. Is he why we didn't draft Sapp or the other OLB pass rushers? Gholston - sounds like he'll be a DE only - but I think we've all given up on him already. (Laura & Maulga are also on the roster - don't don't think either saw the field) So instead of drafting front 7 - which unheralded current Jet may make an impact this year and in years to come?
If we don't re-sign Marques Douglas, it says a lot about the trust in Gholston and new pick-up Rod Wright.
I am also confused that they have completely ignore the front seven as well. Thought Cam Thomas was the pick in the 4th. They must see something in Mknight that was too good to pass up. JM did get a 2nd rd grade originally, so maybe its all about BPA for them this draft. Can someone please explain how we got back into the 4th? I thought we had no picks in rds 3,4,5. What we trade, what we give up, what we give back?
Kris Jenkins got hurt last year and the team actually got better...that's scary. The only player we lost was Marques Douglas. I'd rather have DeVito, RoPo, and Rod Wright. I have a feeling Ryan will bring in a ton of defensive UDFAs.
Like when Jenkins went down and everything was fine? I said way back in March they are confident in the DL depth and the OL was more important due to Sanchez being behind them. This didn't surprise me. TGG wanted a DL, but the FO obviously knows something we don't... like trading up for Sanchez was more brilliant than most understood. Same with Shonn Greene. I trust in what they are doing. I imagine a lot of UDFAs will come in. Rex knows how to get the most out of these guys.
yeah what would of happened if someone went down on the OL or secondary, we would have no depth. You can say that about any position
We didn't get vulnerable--we were very vulnerable against the run sans Jenkins. He hasn't proven that he can stay healthy. I'm very concerned.
Secondary has depth.... Revis gets hurt, we actually have CBs that can do a good job. Could never say that since Revis has been here.
Honestly, I think too much is being made of our lack of depth. How many 3-4 teams have 2 nose tackles like Jenkins and Pouha on the roster? I know Jenkins is coming off the injury and all, but most teams barely have 1 good nose tackle, let alone 2. And ends in Rex's system are not all that important. I understand we need to start looking to the future, but Ellis is still a very good player for 2010. Mike DeVito made great strides last year and the staff might feel confident giving him an expanded role. Maybe they have high hopes for Gholston, Wright, and Pituitua, or at least 1 of them stepping up and being a contributor. Maybe Marques Douglas can be brought back. I would have liked to see them add a lineman for sure, but if Rex didn't think it was a big need, then I trust his judgment on that.
I'm guessing Ryan and crew figure the DE/DT positions can be addressed with undrafted guys/7th rounder while the talent at 4th for someone like McKnight was too good to pass up. Aside from the Gholston pick, this team has drafted phenomenal talent over the past 4-5 years so I'll have faith.
I think Pouha starts at DE next year. Still, they're talking about cutting Ellis, who's 33, Pouha's 31, and Mike DeVito is the only other player who can realistically contribute. We needed to get younger there.
Actually, the defense improved statistically against the run after Jenkins got hurt. Now obviously I'm not saying Pouha is better than Jenkins.. but Pouha did a great job stepping in.
This is factually incorrect. We were ranked in the bottom half of the league through the game where Jenkins went down. We finished in the top 10 by the end of the season. What you have stated is the exact opposite of the truth. Our early problems stopping the run had more to do with poor execution of the scheme than personnel. You only have to watch the first Miami game to see that. As the players grew more accustomed to their assignments the run defense improved. We really could have affored to add another body or two to the D-line but at this point I'm going to trust that Rex understands what we need for the defense to work better than we do.
We had the NUMBER ONE DEFENSE IN FOOTBALL LAST YEAR! Why is the fact we have used 2 of our 3 picks on offense such a shock to you people?
