Incredible stat from NY Post: The Jets open on the road for the 36th time in the team's 47-year history.
Probably. That's my guess anyway. The last time I remember us opening at home was in 2004, and prior to that I can't even remember when.
You have to know something about NYJ history before posting something like this. Under the contract with NYC for Shea the Mets were allowed to stop the NYJs from playing a game at Shea until the BB season was over. Also even if the Mets would have allow the NYJs to play @ Shea the NYJs would have lost revenue for 5,000 or so seats which could not be put in until the BB season was over. A much truer comparision would have been how many times they opened on the road from the time they moved to the M/lands in 84. The report you cited is very bad reporting since it does not lay out the facts properly
Good point, but it doesn't change the disparity. Since 1984 the Jets have opened away 16 times compared to 5 home openers. I think (hope) it will be more balanced when the new stadium opens....
These are good points...although it hasnt gotten any better since. I can remember going to early games at Shea when they had the US Open tennis going on the sameday....TALK ABOUT A MESS.
I would much rather open on the road in September if it means more home games in December. Although more uncomfortable for the fans in attendance, it is advantageous for a team in the playoff hunt to be home down the stretch of the season.
My thoughts Exactly  I can't understand why people cry about this. Especially if it means more Home games towards the end of the season.
OK so about 1/3 of the time indicates that up to now at least the NFL office thought that we did not care if we wanted to open home or away. Thanks for the info
as long as we "share" a stadium with the Giants....I feel we will always get the short end of the stick with this.
I don't know the Giants numbers, but simple math tells me if our numbers are 6-16 for the past 22 years, the Giants' number of home/away games has to be much better, possibly as good as 6-16 inverted, or 16-6 (although not necessarily so). Since we share Giants stadium with the Giants and there are very few times (that I can remember) where the NFL does NOT schedule a game there (and it sits there empty), the Giants' number of home openers must be much better than ours. It is, after all, Giants Stadium and we are the tenants. Is it possible the Giants have enough influence either contractually or otherwise to have the NFL give them most of their openers at home in their own stadium? I'm just wondering if they get a preference. It certainly seems that way. But all that should change with the new stadium. I doubt if the Jets will sit still for anything less than 50-50 on this. It'll be interesting to see who gets the very first NFL game played inthe new stadium... Jets or Giants. The NFL may even give them a chance to settle it with a coin toss before they figure out the schedule.
true in theory, but what has our home record in december been the last 20 years????im way too lazy to look it up but im guess pretty shitty....someone will post it in 5 minutes
Unfortunately, a road opener doesn't necessarily mean more home games in December. The schedule is so scrambled, I'm sure it only increases the possibility by a miniscule amount.
I know that in 1999 Parcells raised hell with the league to get the opener at home, because the Jets had opened not only on the road but on the west coast the three previous years--at Denver (96), Seattle (97) and San Francisco (98). The plan was a rematch of the AFC title game for the opener on MNF but Parcells nixed it, they ended up going to Denver in Week 4. He cited the Jets' history of opening on the road at that time, too. We've since opened at home in 2001 vs Indy, two days before 9/11, and 2004 vs Cincy. The only others I can remember at home in the Meadowlands era are 1989 (New England), 1991 (Tampa Bay) and 1993 (Denver).
