I was trying to make sense of this deal then I remembered that Ed Wade is now the Astros GM and it all fell into place.
Bourne is the Mets equivalent of Milledge/Gomez, a lot of teams wanted him because of his youth and speed. Geary's a solid reliever too.
I think you're overrating Bourn by a decent amount. Costanzo is about the same level prospect as Mulvey and better than any minor league hitter the Mets have after Milledge/Gomez/Martinez. Right now the Mets' lack of 2nd tier prospects in the upper levels is hurting them. Since they don't seem to have that type of depth, I'm not sure if they could have pulled this trade off without dealing a a guy like Pelfrey.
Bourn seems alot more Endy Chavez then Milledge to me. Costanzo has alright minor league numbers, I guess. But a 24 year old that hasn't made it past AA yet doesn't really impress me. Based on the Phillies template of terrible ML reliever, 4th OFer and middling prospect I don't see why the Mets couldn't have pulled off a similar deal.
I agree that Bourn is closer IMO to Chavez than Milledge. Apparently Ed Wade thinks otherwise. I agree that the Astros got poor value. The fact that Wade was responsible for drafting Bourn and Costanzo I'm sure has resulted in him over-inflating their true value.
Free Agency Starts at Midnight ET...2 hours! Question: How long does it usually take for signings to be announced? Will I hear anything when I wake up tomorrow, right after midnight, or does it usually take a few days? I can't remember...
