Wilson was a 4 year starter in College. He played in a pro set his last year in Wisconsin and had a great year. He already had his degree from NC in 3 years before transferring. He came into Seattle with one of the great draft classes in the NFL in at least a decade. He started on a team with a great D and an incredible running game. He wasn't asked to carry the team. He had a stable front office and coaching staff. Wilson is an elite NFL QB but he came into the NFL with a much better base than Sam, he was more mature than Sam and his situation was miles better that what Sam has been thrown into. Wilson also came into the NFL as a much more mature developed athlete and man.
You're right. Matthew Stafford might be the better comparison in terms of situation and he even had Calvin Johnson. As much as it looked like a comparison to Wilson in the early stages of his career, it was more a comparison to him the past couple years when he's lacked weapons and offensive line support. Sam shouldn't have to carry the load now, but all NFL quarterbacks will need to eventually or they turn into what Andy Dalton has become. Our entire draft and off-season needs to be offensive based. Two new offensive line at minimum and really three would be optimum. Two receivers added to the roster as well. He will become Sanchez if we do what we did to Sanchez and try to find cheap old Plaxico Burress/Derrick Mason style players and draft defense defense defense.
Last years draft class was supposed to be great. I think Mayfield is looking terrible, Rosen is an outright bust so far and Allen is clearly an athletic freak who needs a lot of work. It's not a coincidence that Jackson went to a good organization and is thriving. Sam has a lot to overcome. We need talent around him and he needs great coaching. Right now we don't have the talent and the coaching doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
It'll be interesting to see what we try to do to support him. The cap space sits around $50 million. Save $10 for draft picks give or take a couple and we have 3-4 players we can add with a ton of free agents and holes including our entire stable of corners. Up front, we need to resign Jordan Jenkins IMO so he will likely command $8 million or so per year. Other than that, the box is pretty much set with Williamson's return. We may be able to man a budget one year pass rusher or something like that. Vic Beasley style flyer would be great. The wide receiver free agent class is heavy at the top with Cooper, AJ Green (32) and then the second tier of Funchess (meh), Cobb (30), and Emmanual Sanders (33). Devante Parker has a club option. Beyond that we're looking at players like Josh Gordon, Geronimo Allison (best option but Aaron Rodgers effect with departing receivers in play here), Nelson Algholor (dropsies) and Willie Snead. The offensive line market is plentiful though. Anthony Castonzo (32), Brandon Scherff (28), Cody Whitehair (28), Jack Conklin (26), Andrus Peat (26) and JC Tretter (29). Daryl Williams (28) as well. Conklin and Scherff are in line for massive deals due to their age. Take your stab. We should really try to get one of them regardless of the price tag. I'd rather target top offensive lineman because their shelf lives are longer than receivers. And the receiver draft class looks to be deep. AJ Green would be awesome but his injury history worries the hell out of me along with age and I don't think he wants to leave Cincy. We're going to be taking a stab at underperforming high draft pick receivers like Lequon Treadwell and such in FA if we're not going to make Cooper the highest paid in the NFL. It should be noted that this is probably the biggest and best NFL cornerback free agent market in the history of the league. Logan Ryan, Byron Jones, James Bradberry, and Trae Waynes are the headliners with a really good secondary tier behind them. And that scares the hell out of my because our franchise is a magnet for overspending on corners at the wrong junctions in the franchises timeline. We've done it 2x now in 10 years and it burned us both times.
We really need to get a WR or two from the draft. Otherwise, we'll settle for over the hill vets most of the time. Ditto OL. Top OL usually never hit the open market. The impact positions have been poorly addressed or neglected for too long.
Funny you bring up Fitzpatrick. Sam Darnold 2017 Games Discussion Thread Post by: legler82, Sep 10, 2017 in forum: Draft
I was on record of not liking this QB class which I thought were overrated and overhyped. Gun to my head I said I would take Allen because I felt he would be able to grind out wins as he learned the nuances of the position. I appear to be right so far.
Define win with the Jets. Are we winning now? I feel like we would win more games than have but not be winners per say. I saw Wyoming grind out ugly wins off the back of Allen 3 to 4 yards runs and the occasional completion. That same thing is happening in the pros. That said; he was my gun to the head pick. If I was the GM, we wouldn't have been picking a QB in the 2008 draft and Mahomes and Dalvin Cook would be in our backfield.
No questions his fundamentals are at times head scratchingly bad. However if we had a good OL it might be a lot easier to fix his footwork which has to happen for him to becomes a consistently solid QB. How do you fix that if he's seeing ghosts?
At what point is Darnold's honeymoon over? He's got 16 games under his belt and more excuses than wins. 58% comp. ratio 20/20 tds/ints Those are Geno Smith type numbers.
I still remember all the hype for this draft class. It was going to be so good that the Jets shouldn't draft a QB in 2017 some said. Suck for Sam in 2017. Fast forward to 2019 and wow it's the first round class of 2017 featuring Mahomes & Watson that looks superb. The 2018 guys have shown flashes here & there but no consistancy yet. It's still very early so a lot can change but as of this moment none of the 2018 guys come close to being the type of QBs Mahomes & Watson have shown to be. Mahomes & Watson have been so good it's fair to wonder if any of the 2018 guys ever will be as good as those two.
