Jerricho Cotchery is awesome! Seriously, if Pennington always played like what was shown in the video, then I'd be fine with him staying as the starter. Then again, I just may be a hypocrite and be criticizing Pennington on something that I'm giving Clemens a pass on. Yeah, that's it. May the best man win!
Randy Moss is one of the most talented receivers to ever play the game - there's only one of him. While neither Coles or Cotch are all time great receivers, they're both very good. I'm sure Favre would have NO problems working with them.
I tend to agree with this. Look what Favre did with Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, and countless other receivers. At worst Coles and Cotchery are equal to those guys.
I wasn't using the Merriam-Webster definition which certainly wouldn't have considered the Michael Jordan of Washington Wizards fame washed up either. The guy is on the down slope and in the NFL the gentle downslope which feels like a ride that will go on for ever usually ends up going over a 10,000 foot cliff at some point. It's time to see if Clemens is the guy now.
You'd give up a first for a guy at the extreme tail end of his career? I like Favre, but I would be very upset with a move like this.
It would be nice to actually use a first to draft a QB at some point if we need to. Hard to see this Jets team with 1998 Favre beating the Pats or SD or IND.
I realize numbers don't tell the whole story, but his 1998 numbers are very close to his 2007 numbers. Just looking at the #rs you don't see a guy who is on about to fall off a cliff in ability. Code: G GS Comp Att Pct Yds Avg TD Int Sck SckY Rate Att Yds Avg TD FUM Lost 1998 Green Bay Packers 16 16 347 551 63.0 4,212 7.6 31 23 38 223 87.8 40 133 3.3 1 8 2 2007 Green Bay Packers 16 16 356 535 66.5 4,155 7.8 28 15 15 93 95.7 29 12 0.4 0 9 3 edit: I would definitely not agree with trading a #1 for Favre. I just wanted to show this comparison.
adam schefter should really stop fueling the fire on this one. favre needs to call it a career and these reporters should stop encouraging him to come back and make a fool of himself. further, if he were to come back, he certainly wouldn't come to the jets of all places. if he came back, he'd want to join a team that is a serious superbowl contender. i love the jets as much as the next guy, but we're not vying for any superbowl title this year.
I have no doubt Favre would be a huge upgrade over Pennington and would make us a fun team to watch. This teams future is on the shoulders of Clemens or 3 or 4 years down the road with Mr. X. The Jets are rebuilding we should give Clemens the rock this year and that means we don't bring in a 1 or 2 year wonder who isn't going to play.
You may not see it but it is coming. Nobody saw it with Curtis in 05 before he was hurt he looked like a shell of the 04 Martin. Big upgrade over Pennington but doesn't get us over the top. Time to give the rock to Clemens and if he doesn't work out draft a QB next year.
Curtis also had a serious knee injury so that's not the best example. You don't know how long that knee was bothering him before it finally gave out completely. I understand what you're saying though. Really this all comes down to how much you believe Favre would add to this team for 1 season. Personally I believe he could put us in the hunt for a championship if all of our FA pickups work out well and we don't have any significant injuries. Because of that I think it would be worth it to sign him for a year without taking into consideration Clemens' development. It doesn't matter if we have to wait a year to see what he can do if we think we can win a championship this year with someone else, does it? If you don't believe Favre gives us that shot, then obviously you'd rather give the reigns to Clemens sooner than later (now).
I am by no means endorsing the signing of Brett Farve. We are rebuilding and are doing as such. I hope that Mgmt is not stupid enough to think we can compete for a Sb this year. In the event that Kellen does not start it will prove that mgmt thinks we have a legit shot to go someplace. If that is the case then they should sign Farve as opposed to start Chad. I would rather have a gunslinger with a punchers chance if they plan to go for the gusto this year. I hope this is not their thinking but if they do they need to put the player in that gives us the best shot of winning. If I have to hear the inamous Gang green saying put the guy in who just wins then that guy should be Farve or we need to go the rebuild route.
I agree that's the heart of the matter, I would be hard pressed to look at our team even on paper and say Favre makes us a legit contender, I just see to many vacancies in other areas. If every thing played out perfect with our additions and Favre hasn't lost to much you could be right. It would certainly be a more fun team to watch on Sunday.
I agree. Clemens has reasonable arm strength; maybe Favre can throw the ball with even more power, but I still want to give Clemens the nod this year. I think a lot of the allure with Favre is the legacy. The guy has been a great QB, but he is not worth sinking big bucks into at this point; IMO, the Jets would be showing signs of desperation if they brought Favre in and I think ultimately would be a set back for the team in a couple of years in.
I respectfully disagree. While the FO has certainly made a financial commitment to a core group of young talented players, a substantial portion of our recent spending has been for older players who are at (or most likely beyond) their peak performance years that would seem to suggest a greater urgency to win now rather than 3-4 years from now. There are many teams which sustain a high level of play and competitiveness year by year. There are also more than a few teams that ascend (and descend) rapidly. The 2000 Superbowl Champions, the Ravens were an 8-8 team in 1999. The 2004 Steelers went 15-1 on the way to their most recent Superbowl after going 6-10 the year before. 1999 Superbowl winning Rams were 13-3 a year after going, wait for it, 4-12. I am under no illusions that there is any real likelihood of our signing Favre but after all the money we've spent this off season, it would make a lot more sense to explore the competitive possibilities with a high quality, known quantity such as BF rather than with an largely unknown quantity such as Clemens.
Can't argue the merit. The closest we have come to a SB was with Viny having a hell of a year in 98. You could certainly see Favre potentially doing that for us for a year or two.
If Favre comes back this year he will come back for at least two years. Can't see him giving up on retirement only to come back and retire again the following season. I'd take my chances trying to win a SB over the next two years with Favre rather then the crap we currently have occupying the QB position. Besides who would you rather have mentoring our young Qbs Favre or Pennington? Pretty easy answer IMO.
+1 I forgot how good he is After the Catch. Plus, in a few of those highlights - did anyone notice Coles' second gear to where it looks like he was shot out of a cannon? The Baltimore highlight shows it. I wish we'd see it a lot more. He still has that speed to go downfield. The CS just doesn't have the playcalling tailored to that kind of passing offense. Farve does offer a good teacher to Clemens considering they are slightly alike. Perhaps Pennington and a 5th for Farve? I'd do that but I don't think we are the team to get him. This is all just for fun until TC starts.
really guys, why would favre come back, and go to a team thats got no shot at going to the super bowl? The only way i see this guy coming back is if it's with the packers.
