Good stats, were on the field offensively for much longer than last year, I remember last year 3 and outs were a constant thing. My question is, is there a way to compare the amount of time the defense is on the field this year compared to last year?
Last year through 6 games we had an average of 16.3 first downs a game. This year we've had about 18.5, which is nearly 2 more first downs on average. Keep in mind that this also includes the Baltimore game, which was an anomoly. If we take out the lowest for both seasons then you'll see that the average First Downs per game went from 17 a game in 2009 to 21 in 2010. That's 4 more first downs per game, which means that our defense has been on the field even less than last season.
Through 6 games(I rounded the #s and these are per game averages): 2009 TOP: 31 minutes on O, 31 on D(remember we had an OT game) 2010 TOP: 31 mins on O, 29 on D
I think the main issue with this season's defense is that we continue to give up 1st downs on 3rd and Long. While we have been as good, if not better in all other defensive categories....this is what sticks out most to me. Still though, the defense has been great. I think we are all expecting complete domination with the additions to the defense and the way that Revis completely manhandled OchoCinco X2 and Vincent Jackson to end the year. Let the man heal. Revis Christ will return...
I notice the Jets lead the league in takeaway/giveaway with +10. The Steelers are right behind at +9. Funny, I don't hear too many pundits saying the Steelers are living a charmed life and its bound to turn around..
Those #'s are not end of season #'s, our #'s @ the end of the season in '09 were much better that those. We didn't start out like gangbusters on D last season but we got progressively better...so far this season the D is playing better than they played in '09 & I believe will end up playing better in '10 than in '09.
Well Sanchez for one isn't getting any respect, he was voted one of the most overrated players in the NFL by his peers ... Overrated in what sense I don't understand ... As for the minutes the D is on the field, it's nearly similar, we need to continue to keep the D fresh for the 4th QTR and for the playoffs ... the 3rd and long plays is what kills us, hopefully during the bye Rex figures out some new wrinkles in the defense that can limit 3rd and long plays, communication in the secondary also plays a role in this
That poll was taken early in the season and he hadn't done anything yet. That is the first one that has us as low as 3 and that one was just posted. You can say Silver doesn't respect us(though #3 is still respect) but I haven't seen another one where we are lower than 2.
Regardless 9 TDs and 2 INTs is by no means overrated for a 2nd year QB that has helped his team get to 5-1 going into the bye, his completion % may be shitty but he's gotten the job done. How early in the season was this poll taken?
The poll was taken before he started playing well. All they had to go on was his 20 INT performance and the first game or 2 this year. Sanchez has played really well, ignore the comp%. He has made plays for us and been a major factor leading us to 5-1, if the poll was taken today he wouldn't be near that list.
Good thread. I forgot that it wasn't until late last year our defense really jelled. Looks like we are ahead of the curve on offense and right on target on defense. All I know is that even though we are 5-1 there's room to grow and that makes us a scary opponent.
Looking at what he had done leading up to the begining of the season he was defenitely one of the top 5 most over-rated players in the nfl, if not #1. There is no way anyone could say that of him at this point.
