I wouldn't mind bringing back Coles as our #3 WR. He knows the offense and as long as we don't pay him too much it's better than Brad Smith.
^This is so underrated sometimes. A guy will always play his best when he is where he wants to be. Give the man a reasonable contract for 3 years and let him retire a Jet. He pissed me off at times, but the man must be humbled by the last year of events. I doubt he would be the same mouthy guy. Edwards, Cotch, and Coles would make our receiving corps almost as sick as our CB corps.
I wouldn't be upset if he came back to the Jets, even if he is incredibly banged up. Coles won't be anything more than a slot receiver in this offense, so losing him to injury won't be that big of a loss.
Coles to Jets, Part 3 http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...-03-08_coles_could_catch_on_a_third_time.html Just-released Laveranues Coles could sign with New York Jets for third time Anybody interested in a 3.0 version of Laveranues Coles? The Jets apparently are. With at least one opening in their thin receiving corps, the Jets haven't ruled out the possibility of re-signing Coles for a third stint with the team, the Daily News has learned. Coles, 32, was released last week after one season with the Bengals, and he told a New Jersey newspaper he's interested in a return to the Jets. He was cut by the Jets last February, a mutual parting in which he agreed to forfeit $6 million in guaranteed money in exchange for having the final year of his contract voided. The Jets tried to re-sign him for less money, but the Bengals offered a richer deal. Now the Jets are looking for a third or fourth receiver to play behind starters Jerricho Cotchery and Braylon Edwards (restricted free agent). They also have Brad Smith (RFA) and David Clowney, although neither is regarded as a No. 3 receiver. The Jets will take their time before making a decision on Coles, perhaps waiting until after the draft next month, but he might be an option if he agrees to a relatively modest one-year contract. He's definitely on their radar. In this case, the Jets wouldn't be restricted by the new "Final Four" rule because Coles was released by a team and isn't an unrestricted free agent. The rule, designed to prevent the top four playoff teams from spending wildly in an uncapped year, restricts the Jets from signing an unrestricted free agent until they lose one. They haven't lost one yet. Another former ex-Jet is on the market, tight end Chris Baker (cut last week by the Patriots), but the chances of him returning are less likely than Coles. Coles, who played with the Jets from 2000-02 and 2005-08, is coming off his least productive season since his rookie year. He caught only 43 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns, confirming opinions that he lost a step. But Coles believes he was a bad fit in the Bengals' offense and still is capable of being productive for a few more years. RHODES MAP: GM Mike Tannenbaum, in a phone interview yesterday, commented for the first time on the Kerry Rhodes trade to the Cardinals. "He was a good player for us ... but we just felt like with our depth at the position, it was an opportunity to pick up two picks and get good value," he said, referring to the fourth- and seven-round choices in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The Jets have Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith and James Ihedigbo at the position. Tannenbaum acknowledged he probably will add another safety. ... The Jets are trying to re-sign blocking TE Ben Hartsock. ... By unloading Rhodes, RB Thomas Jones and CB Lito Sheppard, the Jets dumped more than $20 million in 2010 salary in an uncapped year, fueling speculation they might be tightening the purse strings because of the labor uncertainty and the costs of the new stadium. "Not at all," Tannenbaum said. "Our mandate from Woody (Johnson) is to go win games. If we see an opportunity, we have the resources to go do it - within reason, of course." He noted the high cost of tenders for their restricted free agents, approximately $13 million.
What I cannot understand is trying to re-sign Hartsock, with Baker available. Hartsock directly contributed to two losses last year, something you never get from Baker, and Baker blocks as well, and has much better hands.....
Whiney little bitch wants to return, eh? Make him come in on his hands and knees and maybe we'll consider giving him the vet minimum. Someone above had floated a 3 year deal? I just hope that they weren't serious.
Baker is a pretty good blocker and is the better receiver. I think his locker room problems were all related to his overinflated self worth in terms of contract demands. At this point he should have come to terms with the fact that he's worth backup TE money. If not, he will have to when he doesn't get offered starter money. That said, I wouldn't mind either. Hartsock did pretty well for us in the running game even though he had some costly penalties in the middle of the season.
Coles is one hit away from becoming a turnip.....entertaining the idea of bringing him back is ridiculous.
He played all last season without a concussion. He's an upgrade over our current #3 WR (by a long shot). He knows this offense. You're talking about maybe a 40-50 reception type role we'd be looking to fill, just about what he did last season. If he went down, we'd simply be left with what we had last season, which wouldn't be the end of the world.
I'm not saying Coles couldn't be successful as a 3rd but i'm kinda tired of his shit. I'd rather see us pick up someone else to fill that role.
But he's a headcase....medically and personably. You and I have had this conversation before.....I think the Jets could do better by going in a different direction. I'd rather see the Jets draft a WR than bring back an older retread. Coles should probably retire.
1. Chris Baker, content at backup role and backup salary, is always welcome 2. Coles? Fuck no. I'm sick and fed up with this bitch. I'm glad he was gone last year, and I do not miss him one bit. I hope he does not come back here.
the two options aren't mutually exclusive ... signing coles lets us draft a WR in the later rounds (instead of the first or second) and gives him the opportunity to develop behind some vets
I sincerely hope I don't see Coles in a Jet uniform again. I hope and pray this does not happen. Let Mark concentrate on those he's already developed chemistry with, he was on point with Cotch and Braylon in the end. Keller too-
