The “good building blocks” weren’t all that good. Mosely doesn’t exist. Herndon, Bell, and Darnold are trash. Anderson was a loss. Adams forced his way out. Q is still here. You say we need to clean house and that’s what Douglas is doing. He’s racking up draft picks, has plenty of cap space, dumped a lot of vets, has a lot of players on short contracts, and he’ll likely have the 1st pick in the draft. It’s an excellent setup for a new head coach with a top tier prospect at QB. He hasn’t been perfect, but I like where Douglas is going with things.
I get that and I agree with you that Idzik failed this team as well, however we are talking about when it started going bad, if you look at the Jets drafts with Rex and Tannenbaum it was all defense with high picks at the expense of the offense.
lmao, what wave did Rex ride? Mangini was an utter failure as a coach, with the team completely quitting on him 2 years running. 1 playoff appearance in 3 years with no wins, some wave. If anything Rex showed how bad a coach Mangini was for producing no results. And Rex did it with a pretty poor and inexperienced QB to boot. Coaching aside tho, it's the GM's role to draft and build a team. Tannenbaum for all his faults also made a lot of really good moves. Unfortunately it's just gotten worse and worse on both the coaching and GM front since then.
We’re you calling him a failure when he was 8-3 and everyone had the team as a favorite to win the AFC and represent the AFC in the SB? Did you remember the drafts from 2009-2014 they were atrocious, Jets had a couple of good defensive players and that’s it! I’m blaming everyone from 2009 till the hiring of Joe Douglas! The wave of players that Jets drafted and signed under Mangini and Tannenbaum set the foundation for the teams Rex coached. Bottom line is team is in good hands with Joe Douglas as his first draft looks like a winner, have not said that in a long time.
Passing on Dan Marino and Warren Sapp were two point in our curve that sent our team 'south' for many years to come. We still haven't recovered.
The team quit on Mangini that year on par with the "enthusiasm" we're seeing from the players this year. I couldn't wait for him to be gone, and neither could the players. Mangini failure's aside, it's not the HC's job to draft players, and drafting isn't the only role of the GM. Tannebaum had mixed results, some good some bad, and ultimately never found answers at QB. It's managed to get a lot worse since then. Fast forward to today, why such optimism on Douglas? I absolutely loved the Becton pick, but the rest of draft is too soon to really judge. However, he supported Gase when everyone could see he wasn't the answer. Combine that with the terrible offesnsive talent, and he finished Darnold here. Poor decision on Anderson, clashed with Adams, had some weird clashes with injured vets, signed terrible FA's...... overall he's made the roster worse (which was hard to do), I don't think there's much debating he's part of the worst Jets team ever. Maybe he turns it around, but as of now he deserves LOTS of criticism, as you'd expect from a season like this.
You are not willing to give JD a mulligan? I’m ok giving him the benefit of the doubt, it takes about 3 drafts to build a true foundation for a winning team. Jets are set at LT, Punter, number 2 receiver ( Mims), number 2 CB (Hall) if he stays healthy, definitely have good role players and special teams depth. I expect Joe to have another good draft next year and select impact players with all the picks they have, I’m actually excited about the future of this roster under JD.
Mulligan? No. You can't mulligan possibly the worst team in NFL history. Benefit of the doubt? Maybe. Let's just hope his mistakes were part of his learning curve, and the lack of experienced leadership within our ownership and FO ranks to help guide him. Criticism? Without a doubt A little too early to anoint the draft class outside of Becton imo. Outside of LT, i can't think of one position that Douglas has actually improved, and standing by Gase ended this season before it began. He has to do better. That said, if some other 2020 draft picks step up next year, we select a real coaching staff, Lawrence is real deal, and we actually support Lawrence with competent personnel including vets, THEN maybe I can start getting optimistic about Douglas. That's a lot of IF's though...
It is hard to see. I want an alpha male for a GM, JD seems to be a puppet to Gase. Gases move as a Jet mirror what was done in Miami where he somehow had control. Everybody has their hopes based on JD, yet next spring 2 yrs into his tenure as GM will we have more potential talent and real talent than when he took over as GM. When he came here we had a top ten rb, a number 3 overall stud of a QB, a true number 1 wb in Anderson, a good tight end in Herdon and Adams, a great lb-in Mosely. That was a core to build around. Timing is also everything, if JD was so smart, he would have tried to start earlier to improve talent. The Bills are a very good young team, the dolphins are a very good young team who if JD is lucky can match over the next two yrs with a very similiar draft cap and cap numbers. Then he has Belly and the pats, the king of the division
JD has sat back and really done nothing while these teams have built good to great programs JD needs to hit on everything from head coach to Trevor , to his free agents and draft picks. He needs to build something from the ashes In probably the best division in the NFL for the next few yrs. The guy has wasted about 1/3 of his contract and we are way behind everyone expect the pats who has Belly and nobody will question him doing something to overtake the division. Even with Trvor we are the Lions or Bengals of our division. If JD had magic I would be seeing a little of it already. Not seeing it yet Becton is a stud. Mims could become very good(might replace Robbies production). Q is a stud however he was drafted from the last gm. That is all we have We need to cut Gore tomorrow, let him play for a playoff team. Let us try out free agent players. Anyone that we do not feel will us for the future needs to be cut. Bring in, everyone. Lets see all of the free agents, most of these guys are depth but we control all of it depth is a major factor in the NFL especially in young teams.
I disagree with one thing stated in this thread (I think) and that is calling this recent draft class "ok but not great" From what we know right now, especially if you get anything at all out of Clark and/or Morgan this was a highly successful draft in my opinion. Basically every single pick was some kind of hit and a few of them look to + or even ++ pro players. If the Jets got results like that for 3 or 4 years in a row you'd have a legit playoff challenging team at worst and maybe even a playoff winning team no? Any team in the NFL would take that as a baseline. Its basically the best you can reasonably hope for.
When half of your “Core” players wouldn’t start on almost any other team, they’re probably not a very good core. Darnold, Herndon, and Bell are playing like backups. Moselys most profound impact will be on the cap, not the field. Douglas stripped the team down and given who the head coach is, the result is not surprising. He’s made some mistakes, yes. His goal appears to be a complete rebuild using lots of picks, lots of cap space, and a new head coach of his choosing. He’s 2/3 of the way there with the first real test coming after the last game of the season.
Lawrence had an up and down game yesterday. Threw a terrible pick in the end zone and should've had another one on the red zone. He made some outstanding throws down field and made a bunch of plays with his legs.
I also think losing McCown hurt/halted Darnold's development more than anyone could have dreamed of. I honestly think McCown was more valuable to Darnold than Gase ever was. McCown had an ability to bring Sam back to zero and get him grounded when things went off the rails. You could see him actively playing shrink with Sam when things went badly. I know we can't see everything, but I truly don't remember seeing Gase do much if any of that. Yes, he looks at the films/stills of the plays and focuses on the Xs and Os, but sometimes it's about forgetting the actual play, putting down the tablet and pictures and working on the psyche of a young QB.
It went wrong many places. But at the core of it all is the reporting structure of both GM and HC reporting to the owner. this is where the cause of all of our issues lie. Especially since our owner has the backbone of a jellyfish.
Still hard to get my head around the fact that some Jets fans still don't understand that JD can't sack Gase and when confronted by a reporter looking for a troublesome story, he straight batted him back a formulaic answer. Only the powder puff brothers can sack Gase, they each report to them as equals. It is one of the most fucked up setups around.
Go wrong? It’s never gone this right for the Jets. You guys are such battered wives that you trick yourselves into thinking a hint of being a competitor once a decade reflects an organization run well enough to take that next step. He didn’t hit me today, things are getting better! This franchise needs a rock bottom and it’s coinciding with the heralded QB prospect we’ve all wanted our entire Jets watching lives. The last thing the Jets need is another 5-11 season that delusional fans think will somehow become 13-3 within two years.
