Why is it suddenly a successful for the Jets to acquire Favre and merely make the playoffs when Pennington has been vilified on this board as a QB who is only good enough to make the playoffs but not win it all???? If the goal is to win it all, and that's all we ever hear - that only one NFL team is successful each year, how exactly does Favre help the Jets reach that goal?? Yes he increases the chances of winning a SB in 2008 to about 5%. But his acquisition decreases the chances of reaching the SB in 2009, 2010 and 2011 when, with a young QB, those odds might be 20% or greater. Are Jet fans that starved for instant gratification that you can't wait 2-3 years for this team to mature and find a young QB to lead them? The QB of the future is either Clemens, Ainge, or someone we don't know yet. Favre will not be QB in 2010.

As an Islander fan, who saw the team squander youth and talent in the 90's, I can tell you that patience is a virtue when it comes to sports. Acquiring Favre is the ultimate in impatience and Jet fans will be regretting the move one or two years from now, after two 8-8 seasons, no titles, and a team in 2010 that is loaded but has no QB at all.

The Packers. Favre is a good fit with them becuase he already knows the system (it's late, don't forget), he knows the coaches, has great chemistry with his WRs and knows the opposing DEFS. If the question is supposed to presume that Favre has a 4K, 28TD season left, then I'd say it's with the Packers. I'm almost certain the chances diminsih greatly for a 4K 28TD season if he comes to the Jets. In fact, it could turn into a 12TD, 16 INT season with the Jets just as easily as a 28TD season with the Packers.

The system? The only way we lose week 1 against Miami is if Parcells and Co. can figure out how to defend 15 yards between the hash marks when Pennington starts. "The system" gets it's ass kicked as often as it kicks ass in this league.

tampa is a nothing franchise and he would never want to go there. Besides, green bay does not want to trade him within the conference, especially to a team they play this year.

I'm not sure we should. Everything else not withstanding, the guy has been an emotional basket case. Football aside, it's unclear whether he really has a grip on whether or not he wants to retire. I'm not sure it doesn't go much deeper than that too.

We're going to bring this guy in here and push aside all other developmental plans, pay through the nose to bring him in here, relocate him, hope like hell he can pick up the entire playbook in 5 weeks, try to teach him (on paper) some of the pitfalls of the DEFS in the AFC East and do this all without some kind of assurance that his vacilations over retirement won't come back to haunt him anytime soon and that his emotional breakdowns on the microphone aren't early signs of some sort of systemic, psychotic behavior that could worsen as the season progressed, especially if he loses a couple of games?

I'm afraid of the guy, okay? He's 39, gots lots of baggage, has had horrendous years when he wasn't on and he ain't gettin' any younger.

I agree with your opinion on the Bucs....but that's where the stalemate begins...Favre wants to stay in the NFC, and the Packers want him out.

This situation is gonna get uglier before it gets better.

Perhaps Tanny is just doing due diligence in exploring all possible options? (while at the same time pre-empting the criticism "They didn't even TRY to sign Favre! What would it have taken to pick up the phone and inquire?")

i'm against it for most of the reasons JWWS mentioned earlier. I also think he would hate the NY press. He is a god in Green Bay and treated as such by the press, but he would be accosted by the press 24/7 and visciously if he through a few picks to lose some games. He wouldn 't be a happy camper in NY.

Of course the same media mouths screaming that this is a no-brainer, will be the first ones criticizing the Jets FO if they got him and things don't go well.

Either choice makes me somewhat unhappy about the Jet's prospects moving forward. That dynasty in New England is at an inflection point where they'll either be dragged down by events, overtaken by another AFC East team with a great plan, or go on to be the Pittsburgh Steelers for the next 25 years. Having us piddle around for 2 or 3 years (as we have been doing since Tannenbaum and Mangini took over) takes us out of the running in the overtake sweepstakes.

God help us all if it's the Dolphins that do the thing right and they're the next AFC East Champion.

I think the minute Favre will sign in Tampa, Garcia will be an Eagle

@topic, I don´t have much faith in any of our QBs, so yeah, bring him in if possible.

The dynasty is looking very much like it's been a few years since they were actually a dynasty. 16 and 0 with three playoff chokes in a row isn't a dynasty.

The Patriots, the Giants, the Colts, the Steelers, and the Chargers for starters. And then Favre goes away after a season or two and we're back to being 23rd in the league.

Brett Favre was a great QB in his time. He had a very good season last year (just lke Curtis Martin in 2004 before the wheels fell off.) The odds on him having your best case season are low, but even if he did the Jets talent base isn't good enough to turn that into a Super Bowl. Not unless a shield comes down and magically protects all of their players from injury AND they catch a bunch of lucky breaks along the way.

Vinny Testaverde in 1998 had a much better season than even a Brett Favre topend season would look like and the Jet's won the division with every absurd break during the season going their way (Vinny's helmet TD against Seattle being the most glaring moment of good fortune) and almost no injuries to speak of. They had a much better base of talent in place going into that season than the Jets have going into 2008 and they had excellent coaching on the field.

    Excellent point.

Oh Lord, a double header... Ding! Ding! Excellent point again. People from outside the NY area truly do not and CAN not appreciate the media pressure here, especially when they've been raised in the layed-back, respectful south and have lived in the midwest in Green Bay, Wisconsin, of all places. Not knocking either of these two locations, but both of these places are not conducive to allowing thoughts very far outside the mainstream.

Enter New York city and the media writers. A guy like Favre has no clue how absolutely brutal they can be, both in writing and in person. As you say, throw a couple of INTs and the season starts looking like it even smells like under .500 and you are yesterday's road kill.

Talk about breaking down on teh microphone? You ain't seen nothin' yet. They will tear this guy a new @sshole.

The Steelers? They had a good draft but they are far from a very good team. We beat them last year. SD, IND, NE yes. NE and IND are only seriously more talented on O right now. We have a lot of very talented players on our D and could, could have a top D. We have average WR and Jones is nothing special but if Miller can return kicks this year, Washington becomes a much bigger part of the O and we can do some damage with a QB who can actually get the ball to our players in space and has the arm to open the field across and down it.

The Patriots have won 66 games in the regular season in the last 5 years and just had their best season ever. If that's not a dynasty then nothing south of the New York Yankees from 1921 to 1942 is.

All the Patriots have to do to keep the dynasty going at the moment is retain Belichik and Pioli for another couple of seasons. All they have to do to become the Steelers of the new millenium is to find a way to replace Tom Brady when he starts to go 2 years after that. Those are both going to be way too easy for a team with the Patriot's resources. They won't necessarily happen, but if you told me that a team was going to win the division 5 times in a row between 2011 and 2015 it'd be a no-brainer that the Patriots would be the team favored to do that at this point.

No offense but last year was not their best season ever it was a disaster of epic proportions. Their D gave up not 1 but 2 TD's in the 4th quarter of the only game that counted for them last year. Their D was embarrased in IND the year before and they were beaten by an average at best Denver team the year before with a huge talent gap in their favor.

The Pats are a team living on the edge and they have proven that with two weeks to prepare and a decent football team they are not great and lack true champoinship caliber heart. Not to mention they won a good chunk of their games with the opposing teams signals.

227, this maybe the most rational, thought provoking post of the year.
