Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Whoa, a project that would only take 6 years? Shit, I'm sold.
Oh God...I've gotten to the point where I just gloss over half of what he says, and I missed that. That is pure gold.
If the seventeenth pick comes around and a great receiver happens to be available, they obviously can't go wrong addressing that need (they probably couldn't pass up Crabtree or Macklin at that spot but unlikely of course). That said, I don't agree with those of the opinion that WR is a more urgent need than RB. We have Jones and Washington right now. If one of them gets injured, in particular Jones, who's running the ball for us? Richardson? I think RB is easily one of the biggest gaps that needs to be filled - Jones has been running well and Washington is awesome, but we need some depth and youth at that position desperately. I'd like to see them go D line or RB in the first, based on who's available, and take a WR in the second or third. Conversely, if they take a WR early, there should still be some good backs to take in the later rounds, I just hope that they address both of those positions at some point in the draft.
I appreciate the kind words at the beginning of your post. I'm not saying "we need Harvin or else". I just have a philosophy w/ the draft that if a guy HAS the value at the given spot and can help the team in SOME way...than there's no reason to be dead set against the selection. Given the choice between a tall #1 WR and Harvin...I'm all for taking the cant miss #1 WR. I'm just not sure that guy is gonna be there at # 17. I have some questions about Britt. I'm not a Harvin "Guy" either..i'm just recognizing that he can create mismatches on the football field and would help this team. He's 4-5 inches taller than Washington, can line up in the slot(washington cant do that consistently)and is alittle less quick but slightly more powerful. He's NOT the same player as Washington and i'm recognizing that there'd be a spot for him in our offensive scheme. Is he the right pick for us? Maybe.Maybe not...but we could do alot worse.
I just read a mock where we would pick James Laurinaitis!! I don't see how that would ever work, plus, that is a HUGE reach. I'm placing him in getting picked up mid 2nd round. I'm thinking that if Rex is cool with the QB situation, I am too. I have a ton of faith in this new system and we just need to get used to it. I'm still saying a WR is the pick however. That is the position in most need on the team and hopefully we can draft someone who can start opening day. I know that's a unrealistic hope, but, you really never know. Harvin might end up being the pick afterall, I really don't want him, I'd rather have Bey to be honest.
Good response, and I can see where you're coming from. I'm not sure that #1 (Maclin) will be there at 17 either, but I don't see any other receiver really deserving the spot. I liked Nicks for some time, but I would like to see a possession receiver who is also a big play threat if I'm taking a receiver at that position. As BM said, Harvin is 3 inches taller than Leon at best, and I'd actually argue that Leon is more powerful. We'll have to disagree on whether there'd be a spot for Harvin in our offense. I'd say no, unless we're ready to cut ties with Stuckey or Washington. I have hope for the former and faith in the latter. If we pass on Harvin, it either means we found our #1 (Maclin), or filled another hole/depth issue on the field. If we take him, we still have just as many holes as we started with. I think there will be too much talent, much of it sure fire, at 17 to do that.
thank you....kind of obnoxious how people are coming off when they've watched little to no SEC football. the guy is a stud
Harvin might be a great player on the college level, but you have to remember the guy has never played a complete season in the 3 years he played at UF. He was always hurt, so what really makes you think he will be able to make it in a 16 game season, plus the 4 pre-season games. I really hope they don't draft Harvin.
It would take balls to pick Harvin, but I think this board has a dangerous mindset of groupspeak and "Go against whatever TBJF says." Harvin is a dynamic athlete and he's apparently run good routes and done pretty well in the combine and other pre-draft exhibitions. We need a receiver opposite Cotchery. I like Clowney. I like Stuckey. But neither has proven much on the NFL level, and Harvin has the ability to be a Santana Moss/Steve Smith type guy. Is he a prototypical #2 receiver? Absolutely not. But is he a good fit opposite Cotchery? Absolutely! Cotchery as a possession receiver with Harvin as the playmaker, that makes sense. Nothing wrong with having two guys who can make plays in the NFL. You don't want him because you don't think he'll stay healthy? Fine. You don't want him because you think he's too raw and you want someone to help out right away? Fine. You don't want him because you don't want a receiver? Fine. But I would have no problem if we took Harvin at 17. I'd rather have Maclin, but I don't expect him to be there. Tyson Jackson wouldn't be a bad pick, but sometimes you have to take a risk. An offense that can put Leon, Harvin, and Keller on the field at the same time, all at different positions, is dangerous if PH pans out.
Great post man and I agree...With Leon @ RB, Harvin as the #2 WR, Cotchery as the #1 with Stucky/Clowney in the slot along with Keller as our pass catching TE, Our offense would actually be exciting and for the 1st time in a lonnnggg time, we could actually say we have an offense thats strong in the running game because our O-Line along with two solid pro-bowl backs in Thomas and Leon and @ the same time, we could then say we have an explosive offense when it comes to the passing game. Play makers @ EVERY position and thats the reason why I want a player like Harvin, an explosive talent and an instant threat to opposing D's. QB-Kellen/Ratliff RB-Jones/Washington FB-Richardson WR-Cotchery WR-Harvin WR-Stucky WR-Clowney TE-Keller O-Line-Ferguson (LT) O-Line-Faneca(LG) O-Line-Mangold(C) O-Line-Moore(RG) O-Line-Woody (RT)
For the last time...Harvin is NOT a #1 OR a #2. Mack, you're right. We don't need a prototypical #2. We have that in Cotchery. What we truly need is a #1 WR who is explosive AND has a set of tools that will aid in possession. The only option who might be around is Maclin. Harvin very well could be successful at the NFL level. I'm not disputing that. However, he himself recognizes that he'll be best used in the slot. He has even compared himself to Welker, and suggests that teams will likely use him in the slot and out of the backfield. It makes sense since his speed differential will make little difference against CBs, but can help him against LBers and safeties. But...how does that help us? Essentially, we're using our first round pick to build depth at the #3 position and take plays away from Leon? How is that sound drafting? Now we have 2 slot receivers, 2 guys we don't get the ball to enough, and NO help where it's needed? I have no problem coming out of the first round with a hole at #1 receiver (and yes, in our offense, I realize that Cotchery will get most of the looks). I don't want to come out of it with a hole there AND at another position.
First of all, I can't see the JETS drafting a #2 receiver in the first round and paying him #1 receiver money. Second, please name me the last Gator receiver that has done anything in the NFL. The Gator receivers that have been drafted lately have done nothing in the league.
To be fair, I don't think you can compare Harvin to the Gator flameouts. He does stand a chance of success in this league, but he has to be used properly. If he were to flameout, a better comparison would be Peter Warrick from FSU, although Warrick had some doubters after poor 40 times that were likely not indicative of his true game speed.
I say we go with trading the pick if we can get a RB later in the round. I believe a RB is a big need being that TJ is acting up and Leon needs to get paid. Having that 3rd back would be nice for the future so we can have that RB at comittee. Then go with a wideout or a TE later since we only have one TE as of right now. Defense is another thing we would have to look at I still say we need a good backup or possibly future starter at NT for Jenkins.
Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard on this site...So...Since when did Leon Washington become the only explosive playmaker the Jets offense is allowed to have? lol, get real man...If the Jets like Harvin's ability, potential and talent, that means we have to release, trade, or not use either Stucky or Washington ALONG with Harvin on Sundays? Are you kidding me guy? Stucky is a nice option for the slot, but give me a break...Harvin has all the talent in the world to become a #2 WR. Leon is the perfect player to use on Kick returns, punt returns, 3rd down situations, HB screens and runs to the outside but never forget one thing...Leon will NEVER be the WR that Harvin will be @ the NFL level because it's obvious that Washington is a RB and Harvin is a WR that just so happened to play for a Gators offense who wanted to use him as their "Superstar-X-Factor" type of player in their spread offense. An Offense with Cotchery, Harvin, Stucky, Keller, Jones and Leon could be an explosive offense with playmakers @ every position. WR-Cotchery WR-Harvin WR-Stucky TE-Keller Thats pretty exciting.
