Whatever they do they need to commit and do it. What's killing this defense right now is that the regime has committed to the 3-4 and also to several 4-3 players. Not going to work, not even a little bit. Clear out the 4-3 players pronto or watch this defense hold the team back until they are aging out.
Regarding 2005, your defense is going to give up a lot of extra yards if your offense can't stay on the field. This year, our run defense has been helped significantly by opposing teams' knowledge that they can easily protect the QB and exploit our soft coverage. Why do we have to play soft cover? We have no hope of blanketing a CB for 5 seconds, which is what the pass rush allows. I think we can all see the problem.
dorsey is a little small to be playing end and certainly cant play NT. hes almost the sequel to Dewayne Robertson. either trade down(asuming this season gets worse) and get Jake Long and put him at RT or draft Okam. thats my early preference but it could easily change.
Shit, I'd be all for it. But I just cannot imagine how nobody gets close to ther QB when we send more blitzers than blockers. Are their linemen and RBs blocking 2 guys each?
Lack of patience is what got the Jets into this mess. The Jets are a rebuilding team and it is about time someone got in here and cleaned up the messes left over from Parcells/Herm. Mangini wants to run a 3-4 and it will be very very successful down the road. There will be a lot of our players moving this up coming off-season, you just cant cut and release everyone in one year. The cap hit will really hurt the future. Right now the cap is in very very good shape and the Jets have locked up the main pieces of the Defense and Offense for years to come. Now let Mangini implement his defensive scheme with the players that he brings in. Rebuilding takes a minimum of 3 years before you can really contend. This is year two, the Jets just ended up with a very easy schedule last year. I will tell you one thing though, I never want to lose to the Patriots in the playoffs again. The only way to beat them is to build from the ground up. Tannenbaum and Mangini and Schottenheimer and in place to take this team into a new milenium. Let them build it before you prepare to burn it down. I would prefer 2 more losing seasons for a legit shot in the 3rd year. For all the people who feel they should make even more adjustments. Who feel players and coaches should be fired, cut, or released. Go join the Kansas City Chiefs they have a clueless head coach and they will never be the team they once were. For me....I am a Jets fan, and I am 100% this organization for future purposes. There is a reason most of you guys play Madden! Youth
You guys do realize that if we switched to the 4-3 our defensive ends would be Shaun Ellis and Bryan Thomas? Players not exactly known for their pass rushing prowess. Thomas only came alive in his first season the 3-4, he sucked in the 4-3 and Ellis only had about 1 good season of pass rushing. Oh and also, we still would not have a nose tackle. So our starting lineup would probably be Ellis-Pouha-Robertson-Thomas and Hobson-Vilma-Barton. We still would not get any pressure on the QB and we would be substituting two good players (Harris, Coleman) for a question mark (Pouha) and completely negating any chance Bryan Thomas has of getting to the Quarterback. The fact of the matter is our defense would suck in either scheme and I think we should be glad we are playing the 3-4 if it is our long term strategy because the few players that do fit the scheme are getting valuable reps. Also, I believe you would only be swapping our run defense problem for a possibly bigger pass defense problem if you moved from the 3-4 to the 4-3.
One thing confuses me. Why do people think the 4-3 is going to work with our personnel? We had a lot of the same personnel when we ran the 4-3 2 yrs ago and people ran up and down the field on us.
That is true. We never replaced what Ferguson did for us in 2004, I don't think we are a good defense with either formation now. I would prefer us moving back to a 4-3 though, mainly because I think Vilma is still our best defensive player, and his skills are being wasted now. And it really doesn't make much sense, I don't know one player on the defense who is playing really well right now and wouldn't be able to play a 4-3. Thomas was solid last year, but I guess he was just playing for a contract. I think Vilma, Ellis, and Robertson are all much better 4-3 players. If the Jets are committed to a 3-4, than they have to do a better job of getting personnel in here. Should have made a bigger run at Thomas in the offseason. Kenyon Coleman looks like a decent player. Harris is looking like a good pick. But it's going to take a lot more than that.
Totally agree. We replaced Jason Ferguson with no one (granted he had to go). We replaced John Abraham for Bryan Thomas (he had to go as well). Talent wise that is a huge drop off. With the 3-4 you at least have some flexibility to move people around and mask inefficiencies. Also are best players on defense are our Linebacker so we might as well put as many on the field as possible. Rome wasn't built in a day.
