Agreed. I just can't see us adding RGIII. The cap is the main reason, but mostly, I don't agree with those who think he'd be a fit here. He's talented, but too fragile, and I'm not sure he can learn to just stay in the pocket and not try to run.

Waste of a roster spot. We know he doesn't have it. At least Geno still has a minute chance.

You're such a fan boy it's unbelievable. Geno Smith is a career backup if he's lucky enough to collect that paycheck for another 3 years.

Back when Smith was the starter, I'd have been all about giving RG3 a shot, but it's a little murkier now.

If we're assuming Fitz is the starter and there won't be a competition (very likely), RG3 isn't coming to sit on the NYJ bench. Not when he can start for Houston, LA, or Cleveland without a serious competition. And, as far as the QB2 spot goes, if Petty is the backup, it might be more beneficial to have a younger talent to develop (i.e., someone from the draft). All in all, it doesn't make sense for either side.

That being said, I do like RG3's potential. He started off very immature, then got a raw deal from Shanahan, and then fat Gruden. Getting benched was certainly a learning experience for him, and how he handled it exemplifies some personal growth. However, unless the Jets want to stir things up, it's just not likely.

I'd rather him run that seemed to be his problem in DC... he stopped running, and has no pocket awareness so he basically doomed his damn self trying to be something he wasn't. Sad he doesn't realize he can open up his own pass game by running himself. But i dont think he'd be a good fit here either.. Fitz got killed last year and thank god he's as tough and durable as he was because RGKnee woulda been on IR for sure lol. Esp. after that Texans or Giants game where Fitz was destroyed.

Thing is I think RG3 needs to go to a system that benefits him. Houston, LA and Clevland all run a standard pocket passing offence. He might have a chance to start with those teams but that doesn't mean he has the best opportunity to succeed.

With the Jets yes he would need to sit for a year most likely (unless he blows Fitz out the water in TC or Fitz gets hurt) but he has the best chance to succeed in his nfl career playing in a Chan Gailey offence that complements his skill set and could bring him back to the level of play we all know he is capable of in his rookie year.

I agree with this. Gailey's system is a good fit for RGIII. If Fitzpatrick is still here too it would help him in a number of different ways, it would lower expectations for him knowing he doesn't have to be a franchise savior, and he could learn a lot from Fitzpatrick in regards to getting the ball out quickly because he's going to need that skill to stay healthy in this league.

He was never a bad passer. It is a common misconception that he is solely a running QB only because his knee injury coincided with his decline in play. Leading people to believe he could only play well when running. Thats not true at all. He was drafted as a passer and he's proven he can pass the football in this league.

The big thing was he rushed back from his injury too quickly (and that's on him, he made a big deal about his return). After his great rookie year he rushed back, still injured to extremely high expectations and Washington's defense was also horrendous that year. So you had an injured player who everyone believed was a savior having to put up 30 points a game to win. Disaster in the making. Then Gruden came in and there was an obvious personality clash there.

I personally am not counting out Griffin as a player in this league. 26 year old QBs with as much raw talent as he has don't come along often. This isn't an example of an overdrafted QB who failed because he wasn't all that good anyway (like a Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, etc.) this is a player who any given year would've been a slam dunk 1st overall draft pick if he didn't come out behind Luck. He's also shown the ability to play in this league, taking the league by storm his rookie season. And now he's a little more humble, more mature than he was before. Whoever signs him will get a hell of an intriguing prospect IMO.

Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Hoyer: all players who were either drafted as a project or signed off the scrap heap at some point in their careers as a project for a franchise

and this is just guys currently in the league, not even looking at historical projects that panned out. Also none of those guys had 1st overall player ability like Griffin. Idk if he'll pan out or not but to answer your question, there are a lot of projects at QB that have paid off

    --

also- thats not even mentioning a guy like Drew Brees who had a lot of talent and early success before a franchise gave up on him after a rocky stretch - which is a redemption story similar to what could happen with Griffin

If negotiations with fitz somehow fell apart than rg3 would become priority #1. As it stands now, i am ok with the qb roster as it is.

Geno has had plenty of his own 'Perfect Game' stats including the last half of 2014 when he was the 2nd rated QB in the NFL (behind only P Manning who was having a SB year in Denver). So both men have had great days sprinkled in. Since either guy will start out as BU, gotta go with the cheapest one. Geno.

I believe that you're mistaken. He got injured when he tried to run, not when he was standing in the pocket. He is too small, particularly his legs. He just cannot take the pounding.

It's a shame that we won't be in position to sign a player like RG3 because he will get a chance to start in some places and if not command the highest backup salary in the NFL by a wide margin.

I think he's going to bounce back and have a good career. He's no longer Daniel Snyder's golden child that Snyder is more than willing to fire coaches for. He's not the franchise gem. It's almost as if he has a clean slate as a prove it player which can be very humbling for someone who wants to be great.

Cam Newton showed a lot more in his young career but look at how he went from undefeated in college and a man among boys in college to losing 19 games in his first 2 years changed him. It's easy to forget how young these guys are and how easy it is to get so high on yourself ad the #2 overall pick and a playoff appearance in your first year to being unseated by a 4th round QB who was supposed to be your backup.

Btw for all you saying he needs to run. Kaepernick vs. Cam and Russell Wilson proves you need be a passer that can run not a runner that can pass.

If his pocket game doesn't develop he won't be in the league long enough for his running to be effective.

No your just not getting what im getting at lol. He has been injured running and injured in the pocket on different occasions it doesnt matter where he gets hit because regardless he's frail. Im saying his game fell off when he started trying to be a pocket passer instead of mixing it up like his rookie season. When he runs he opens up passing lanes for himself..

I like your post with the exception of the bolded sentence, which is preposterous. He wasn't a better prospect than Cam, and there have been prospects at other positions that were better prospects imo.

No. He cannot run even like Fitz. He just is too small and can't take the hits. He can move around in the pocket a little to buy some time, but he has to get the ball out quickly or throw it away. You're wrong imo. His game didn't fall off when started trying to be a pocket passer. It fell off when he tried to do too much and the OC and he didn't see eye-to-eye. He will NEVER succeed in the NFL trying to run the ball because he won't be able to stay on the field and off of IR.

i guess i wasn't looking at specific players. a better way of saying it I guess it that most years he would be considered the slam dunk no.1 overall player. Newton I would put up there with Luck as guys who would be no.1 in any year

LOL RG3 cant run like fitz? I mean i know he's injure prone but Fitz couldnt hold RG's jock strap when it comes to scrambling as a QB. They both need to learn how to slide and avoid hits that was one of Fitz's biggest problems this year. I feel like Fitz does it to prove his toughness or something but he has already proven that... he needs to slide lol.

WHen RG was running that option heavy he was stellar.... when they stopped he sucked.

Regardless of both of our views on his downfall... we agree that we'd be better off without him.

You missed my point entirely. The point is that while RGIII is faster, more athletic, and a better runner than Fitz, he is more slightly built and more injury prone. That's what I meant by he can't run like Fitz. Fitz usually picks his spots, and his runs I don't think are designed runs. I may be mistaken, but I believe that RGIII either audibles into runs or is too quick to run.

Fitz has had problems of his own, but RGIII is so slight, especially his legs, that any time he runs, he's asking for a trip to the IR. It's also a matter of his style of running. Fitz is smart enough to slide at least some of the time. When RGIII was injured, he wasn't sliding, he was trying to hurdle or being more aggressive. If he could learn to run more like Rodgers and only run when there was a clear opening and he could get out of bounds or slide, fine. I'm just not sure that he has learned that yet, or is willing or capable of adjusting his style of play.

The most important point is that he isn't a fit here cap wise and on that, we definitely agree.
