I was very, very, very impressed by our new young QB. The kid was getting hammered all night and kept getting back up and going right back at them.

Many passes he threw were right on the money and dropped including the game winner that was in the endzone.

I must say the kid has some fire about him, I would really like to see him behind the first team Oline for a few series. He show me a lot tonigh, really looked tough as nails

Sorry guys, missed the (DEFENSE) ref, in the title thread

Exaclty. That's why I didn't expect him to disrupt 4 plays in a quarter.

He did a smart thing when #27 on the Texans (Ogbennaya?) had a delayed route and he hit into him as he kept his contain. That play I liked because it was heads up. You have a RB running into your assigned gap - try to blow him up on his way to hitting the stem of his route.

I wanna add that Pouha played a beast game too. He's the reason why Mauga got the tackle for loss when he filled in for Bart.

Also, the blitz that got Mauga his sack was a work of art. Ward fucked up his protection which allowed Mauga to be the free rusher, but the rest of it was beautiful.

Yeah hes getting alot of credit he doesnt deserve. Don't get me wrong, he looked good out there. Strong at the point of attack, fast, and had good hips, but I think Gholston might have been able to get that sack.

Is it me or does he look small for a 3-4 mlb?

Mauga is a reliable tackler and is in position. He deserves the credit he's getting. The scheme allowed him to shine. That's what this defense is all about.

Ellis did quite well for a small college, raw NT. Beat his guy in leverage and pushed back the backup OLs. Plenty to be optimistic about with Ellis. He should see time this year backing up Pouha.

Wilson looks a lot more comfortable out there. He didn't give up anything of note, if anything at all. I was happy with how he played.

2nd string DL had a good game today. Ropati, Ellis, and Dixon all played well. Ropati knocked the backup center into Leinart on 3rd and 11 in the 2nd qtr. It wsa sweet.

There is depth was there was none. Yep, one game and I'm saying it.

Mauga for obvious reasons, he looked fantastic and played like he wanted it

Someone you guys aren't mentioning and that Mcintyre fellow from the CFL he was real solid last night

The D-Line. Devito, Pouha, Gilbert, Wilerkson, Ellis, DIxon, Pitoitua all were involved somehow.

Guys I didn't feel great about:
McIntyre may have had two sackes but looked completely lost when not rushing the passer.

Rex may have said E. Smith was the starter at safety, but he was very iffy in his pass coverage. Yep, he can hit hard and is aggressive, as shown by knocking Ward out of the game, but he is lacking coverage skills. Even if he starts week one, I expect Pool to be the starter by week eight.

    Guys that showed improvement:
Wilson had a good pass breakup and other than that his name was not mentioned, which is a big inprovement fron last season.

    M. Dixon is doing well and is one of our top six D-linemen, well our sixth top anyways.

Strickland will be a solid contributor once he gets back in sync with the system.

    Needs:
We still need another OLB, if Thomas or Pace gets hurt we are screwed.

Looks like rex wasn't joking when he said our DL has gone from a weakness last season to one of our strengths this year.

Our DL rotation is going to be very good, really looking forward to seeing these guys in the regular season

We had 2 weeks of camp McIntyre is going to be a good replacement. If by the 3rd and 4th pre season game he's doing that then he's not ready for the NFL but he did well for his first game in my eyes.

I'm hoping that we see some formations with Ellis and Pouha on the field at the same time. I remember reading that Rex and Pettine had similar plans for Jenkins before his injury.

Rex looked pretty bad ass as usual. Silver linked chain, tribal tattoo and all business attitude. I really enjoyed the headset toss on preseason game 1, 2nd team d line stand. Our band of lunatics has a great leader. Here's one for Rex!

"Do you want it or not!?!" "Do you understand there's a price you have to pay!"

He looked lost for a good portion of the game but at least he looked comfortable while he was rushing the passer. Hopefully he can catch on as a reserve. Given some more time in the defense he could turn into something.

Mauga brought a lot of intensity...I like this guy.
    K. Ellis & K. Wilson did their thing.

    Was Wilkerson playing?

The play action pass killed us all game and our linebackers look absolutely lost when forced to drop back into coverage. We have a lot of really slow players in the middle of the field....this could be a problem.

Pass rusher is our biggest weakness on D, so having a roster spot for a kid to strictly get to the QB on obvious passing downs can't be a bad thing. Be nice, in the preseason, to get him some snaps with the 1sts. If he can get to the QB with the 2nd unit, I don't why he couldn't do it with the 1st unit.

Totally agree. As one who has been looking forward to seeing him get some more time, I was very disappointed. He was consistently out of position, got minimal rush when he blitzed and basically looked lost on many plays. He's been in the system a couple of years now and should have been lighting it up when the scrubs came in. Not sure what that thing on his right arm was, maybe he's nursing some injury, but I was not impressed.

I don't care what Rex or anyone else says, to me his is just another JAG until he starts to play like a Jet. And jeez, don't even get me going on Ducasse the other guy I thought would make huge steps this year...
