Nate Solder, Jake Matthews and Donovan Smith are among the top 5 paid left tackles in the league. I think most would prefer paying Trent Brown his money to play right than these bums to be to their left tackle.
There is no "championship" quest next year. Its at least a 2 year build. And no RT is worth that much. Yes that 5 millon is important. Thats at least 3 depth players. We had 0 depth this year which is why we were crap. We need a solid all around team. Not good at a few positions that we over paid.
That's on the teams paying them. Those are over paid left tackles. I still wouldn't pay Brown 18 million. For that price I can resign Robbie and have 8 million to spend on depth. How much good did Brown do in Oakland. Run game improved but they aren't in the playoffs because RT wasn't a game changer for them. 18+ million is game changer pay.
The "depth" players you mention we were missing aren't going to be difference-makers regardless. It's vastly more critical to plug a gaping hole for the next 3-5 years with a reliable player than adding a few warm bodies as fill or backups. One crippling injury to Darnold vaporizes whatever "savings" you achieved doing it your way.
Yeah because yhis year with darnold and 20 players on injured reserve we had a chance. If that RT goes down much like mosley did this year and there is no depth you just wasted 18 million . No as I said good teams don't over pay. Thats why they are consistently good . Overpaying is not the answer unless you want to be Same Old Jets
You're mixing and matching to suit your argument. What Pro Bowl (or near PB) level OL are you going to sign for $10 million to get your savings? Sure, maybe you can find one in the draft who will be a Day 1 starter, but you can't count on finding two of those (hopefully, but not assuredly). So that means you're going to have to pay a young, proven FA vet. An again, if you can find those for $10 million, great! But I doubt it, and I doubt you find those who choose to come to the Jets when NE, Seattle, SF, KC or one of the other winning franchises will pay them, so you'll have to pay the "Shitty Team Premium". And BTW, that applies to every position.
I just don't see this team having any sort of luxury of slow building the offensive line. It needs a massive overhaul and quickly. If that means overpaying for Conklin or Castonzo, then so be it. Castonzo is 31, Conklin is 26 at the start of next year. Offensive lineman last deeper into their 30's which is why it's easier to stomach big contracts at the position. We had our chance to build the line for Sam the past two years and we decided to punt on it. Now we must do it quickly and that will requiring overpaying at 1 or 2 positions. So in two years when we can compete, we'll still have said players. This isn't advocation for signing a 31 year old corner. You can over pay second contract players at certain positions. You can't at others. Everything's supposed to be built through the draft including depth. But I'd rather rely on some big ticket starters than lots of shitty $2 million per year depth.
Actually before good teams became good teams, they too had to overpay in some cases. Once they became good, then they have their pick of talent and don't have to pay the "Shitty Team Premium".
You don't have to pay the shitty team premium at all. Its starts with drafting right. Over the next 2 years it can be fixxed. But if we sign an RT for 19 million we will regress. Patriots never overpaid a RT, neither did Seattle , Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Saints, or any good team. Yes we need o line. And if we draft them and find stop gaps (resign Beachum and put rookie on right side year one) webwill have a oline and the money to resign Darnold, Robbie, and other important parts. Here is the Fact - Overpaying doesn't happen on good team. They rely on good signings and drafting. There is no over pay players so we can set ourselves back again and again and again. If we sign one for that much we might as well call it a wash and wait till he's gone.
It is going to take at least 2 offseasons for us to become truly competitive. I said nothing about reaching, but the time has come that we may have to reach a little. The thing is, one of the reasons we wound up picking D year after year was that Mac was focused on BPA, other teams were focusing on offense, and so the BPA at our pick was always D. That insanity must stop, even if it does mean reaching a little. We can draft the top defensive players until doomsday, but we won't be truly competitive until or unless we get a 21st century NFL offense. With all our needs on offense, I have a hard time believing that a D player would be the BPA and best choice at any given spot in the draft. In your example above, no you don't reach that far, but if you have a desperate need at that position, you can reach a little 3-5 spots if you can't trade down. Besides, there's always a risk with trading down that you'll miss out on a player you like at a position of need. Right tackles can be almost as important as LTs. I don't lump them in with OGs at all, and OGs have gained in importance. While I still wouldn't use a top 15 draft pick on an OG, unless it was a weak draft talent-wise, and there was an OG sitting there that was head and shoulders better than anyone else, and a potential perennial All Pro, I would now draft an OG at the bottom of the 1st round if there was an OG rated that highly and I had a need for a starting OG.
I agree. Reaching a little is fine 3-5 spots.. in mine I said Higgins. I also like Austin Jackson in that trade back spot and other WR in the second and 3rd round. I wouldn't draft a guard until round 2 or 3 because there is no Quentin Nelson in this draft. I don't think any of these guards could make a first round impact. RT are important as well but again not first round important. Outside of a rare few every tackle drafted in the first round was drafted to be a left tackle, some never worked and were moved to the right side.
I think the easiest solution to fixing the team on the most macro of levels is to prioritize the offense as much as possible. Its long overdue. This offense needs TALENT
I will agree with that. I'm all for working on offense just not over reaching and over paying. Good teams are built through the draft. Free agency is nice to add solid vets and depth, but overpaying and over reaching the draft leads to bad teams with no future.
In my opinion the most important positions in today's NFL are QB, OL, Edge, CB, and WR. The Jets need to do whatever it takes to get impact players at this positions. OL and WR should be the priority this offseason as those positions are just dreadful. It also helps that Gregg Williams is currently making chicken salad out of chicken shit. Next season the Jets will have a fully healthy defense and will be much better. So basically, offense all the way. If the Jets spent every single draft pick this year on offense and most of their FA resources on offense, I would not give a damn. It's time to start scoring points.
Truthfully, that wasn't my intention, although I often disagree with him, I try not to call anyone stupid (except the Johnsons).
I agree with this a few shots at edge or cb wouldn't hurt my feelings but nothing higher than a 3rd. FA cb would be fine.
Jeffery Okudah, yes he could be there. He is very talented. I think some of his production could be attributed to having the best pass rusher in college football. But overall extremely talented.
Hope Okudah goes in top 5. If Okudah & 2 QBs can go before Jets are on clock that would be extremely beneficial.
