However, he was highly mobile and athletic when he was young and at Alabama. Maybe today's knee surgery advances would have helped him. The thing about Namath is that a knee injury didn't cut a long career short, it sort of was with him his whole career. It changed the way he played from the get-go.
today, broadway joe would be playing for another team, as the current idiot owner and gm would be too stupid to draft him in the first place. "we're ground and pound, so why do we need a guy who's always passing the ball? "
In the internet era, when many posting never saw him play, except in old highlight filsms, what else is there to go by than stats? He had more career INT's than TD's? Well, not sure about the internet, but if nothing else, talk radio would have been interesting....
Poor bastard would probably get posted all over lame sites like TMZ for his nightly escapes on a daily basis, then rebroadcast on "professional" sports sites from NFL "bloggers" (whateverthefuck that job means) who get paid to do nothing but regurgitate bullshit with 7th grade grammar...... Then people here would bitch that he's partying too much & wasn't watching enough gametape and that's the reason he's throwing so many picks. Of course there would also be a few dorks debating that the latest chick he was caught with "isn't that hot" compared to latest interweb airbrushed Maxim babe they've been spankin' it to. Welcome to 2012..... isn't the world supposed to end soon? :breakdance:
For the first few years, we would all trash the general manager, dying to fire him for giving so much money to a guy with no knees who parties 8 days a week. Then, when we went to the Super Bowl, we would have absolutely adored him for taking us there, and enjoyed the guarantee talk. Then, once he actually delivered, pandemonium. That would have earned him a pass for a couple years, then people would want him out due to injuries/ineffectiveness. Unless people were still holding the Bachelors II thing over his head. I'm sure there are some fans who would be too busy being pissed off about him almost retiring over a sports bar and never forgive him for that. Because many sports fans are very stupid.
Anyone who pays PSLs and full price for preseason tickets is at least somewhat of a sucker, my family included.
all this discussion is just white noise...theres only one thing that counts and matters at all. WINS and LOSSES, and that story in 2012 has not been told yet.
The man saved the NFL from themselves. I am truly blessed to have seen him play. Different era,bad knees, cocky and he directed the biggest upset in NFL history at the time. And a far as his opinions.........just like assholes ,everyone has one. A true hero of the game. Oh yeah..........he also saved the AFL. Not a bad resume for an old timer. He was bigger than the game. Not to mention a guarantee that he delivered. Bradshaw has dissed the Steelers and it has never bothered me. Not so sure why some folks get all uptight with Joe. If any thing he's honest about his feelings and honesty is always a good thing.
But we have Tebow. That should account for a bunch of PSL sales. Woody says we can never have too much Tebow. Oh suckers? My bad. Carry on. Seriously though. If I still lived in the NY/NJ area. I'd be in the same sucker group.
First QB to EVER throw for 4,000 yards in one season. In a 14 game season. Next guy (Fouts) didn't do it until 12 years later
i saw him play also. and, a friend of mine went to college in latrobe, so i got to see the noll sb steelers up-close. those guys were scary as hell and i would not want to play against them for any amount of money. if only we could get a jets team now that was half as good as those guys.
