How is it that you never heard of Lawson? I don't keep up with other teams, but I remember when he was in the draft, and in reading about FA and possible fits for the Jets, he was in all the articles that I saw.
The scheme itself is sort of run first, just not in the way we're used to. It's designed to make huge gains to avoid 3rd down altogether instead of chipping away 3 yards at a time and hoping you don't need to pass. It turns 9 of the 11 offensive players on the field into schemed run blockers instead of just 5 or 6. The passing game is heavily predicated in play action because of this. In not totally blown away by each of the individual signings but when you stand back and look at the philosophy being implemented, I think it's a smart one. They are employing the chip on the shoulder of a group of players who were able to produce in the right situation but not enough to be signed back to the teams that drafted them and are going to use that chip to try to get instant production out of them while the young players acquired via draft learn the NFL and hopefully come into their own. Obviously it won't work out for all of the FAs but there's a decent enough chance that some of them will use that chip to overperform and bridge the gap for the rebuild players to take over, and maybe even some of those FA players end up staying on long term.
Corey Davis is a rock solid WR2 and Lawson was the best pass rusher on the market. Cole is a WR4....tell me who has a better WR4, there aren’t many teams who have good ones. And Cole is a perfect super sub because he can play anywhere. Got the best special teamer available and a solid safety in Joyner. All high character guys. Couldn’t disagree more with the FA take.
Regarding Lawson, this snippet is per "newyorkjets.com." Full article linked below. It's true that Carl Lawson, who signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Jets this week, doesn't have a lot of sacks in his career. Lawson's 20.0 sacks in four seasons with Cincinnati averages out to 5.0 sacks/season. But he was one of the top sackers in that span for the Bengals, who produced the second-fewest sacks (123 or 31.0/season) as a team in the NFL from 2017-20. And by another measure of pass-rushing prowess, Lawson is among the very best quarterback rushers in pro football. That measure is number of defensive snaps per QB hit. Lawson, who lined up as a linebacker as a rookie before putting his hand in the dirt at RDE the past three seasons, has 83 QB hits in his career. Produced over the course of 1,881 defensive snaps, he put a whack on the quarterback every 22.7 snaps. For the top 100 NFL defensive players, regardless of position, with at least 33 QBHs the past four seasons, Lawson has needed less playing time than anyone else to get some piece of his body on the QB. https://www.newyorkjets.com/news/in...asure-carl-lawson-s-among-best-at-hunting-qbs
You can tell that this off season is really getting to people when we have almost 3 pages of discussion on a waste of time like this guy. Next!
ColoradoContrails, I always enjoy your input, BUT to be FAIR, only about a page and a half are about Wilson...the rest of the thread is a discussion/slight debate regarding the quality of our FA class thus far.
I think you're underestimating Davis. He has a chance to be a #1 WR in the right system. Whether he will get there with the Jets is unclear but he was probably the best chance they had to get a young WR on the ascent before the draft.
That’s fine you don’t have to agree.. I feel they are boom or bust signings and none of them will be on the roster in 2 years
He was drafted in the top 10 and had ample opportunity to be a #1 but he’s too one dimensional unfortunately. As soon as AJ Brown came he was waaaay better than Corey Davis. Mims is going to have step up.
