The NFL didnt do that ESPN did. Just like they helped keep FSU a National Championship contender last year, despite a ridiculous schedule, because hey...They're Undefeated. While OSU, was racking up 50 a week and was shut out of the top four till the last week of the season, then beat the living piss out of all of the allegedly great teams. Particularly the Sabanites.
Ummm...A not lifelong football pro said...in this very forum...Sanchez will play for 4 million next year. And most football pros (read every GM in football) passed on Geno Smith. Idzik was a douche that trashed a top 5 pick, and 50million dollars of Woody's money, because of the NYPosts back page, and the hopes of catching lightning in a bottle.
people crying about miles like he was the love child of ed reed and sean taylor. smh dude is a text book fringe roster player.
I watch a lot of LSU games and from what I remember Martin was a pretty good box safety that struggled to cover WRs but matched up pretty well with TEs. He also was a core special teamer and played some LB when needed. Martin should be able to contribute on special teams right away and maybe play LB in nickel packages. I'm thinking that Bowles will try to use Martin the way he used Deone Bucannon while in Arizona.
C'mon, Hobbes old boy. Every player not selected in the first round was passed on by every GM in football.
For all the panic and criticism of the Jets FO by our resident expert talent evaluators, not ONE NFL team claimed Miles or signed him after he was released. That speaks volumes to me
I have not once questioned the front offices', our coaching staffs' motives. Of course they want to win. Of course they make every move because they believe it's in the best interest of this franchise. They traded for Posey, turned out it was a mistake. It happens, folks. We really need to stop assuming that everything they do is the right thing, that everything is going to work out just fine. There is nothing wrong with questioning moves. You don't have to blindly just buy into everything and convince yourself that it's the right thing. It's almost like politics. If you're a republican you don't have to buy into everything certain republicans are saying and then disagree with everything a democrat is saying. If something doesn't make sense to you question it. Get an answer, get somebody to explain it to you. Is this going to work out the way Macc drew it up? Who knows, maybe. It might. Am I skeptical? Yes. For good reason. And when the only argument somebody here can come up with is "well...but they must know SOMETHING about the guy, we are just fans we have no clue" then sorry, that's not going to fly. Don't do that. You're implying that everything they do will be the right thing. And if something doesn't work out you'll be disappointed and question whether they know what they're doing, when really this all is part of it. That doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing. Look, just watch the two play. Miles outplayed him. Anybody who saw the tape would agree. We're just here to discuss and question these moves. Does this mean Martin can't be a better player in this defense? Does it mean Martin can't be more valuable in this defense? No. I'm sure he can be. Nobody is calling Macc incompetent, nobody expects him to be perfect. Don't take that angle that he is, that he knows everything. Questioning moves doesn't mean that. Macc will miss, he will make mistakes, he's human. GM's don't get handed a secret book of facts once they're hired that gives them the real truth about all NFL players. There is no science to this. You can't use math formulas, take your defense + certain player and see the outcome versus some other player. The best scouts of all time are going to be wrong about players over and over again, each year, while some random fan who has never played any football in the end will be right and go "told you so". Sometimes it's better to be lucky than to know more, especially when you scout players, or even as a stock guy. Knowledge only helps so much when you're gambling and football is gambling when you build teams. If knowledge was all you needed everybody would be a billionaire, every team would have 53 HOF type players, there wouldn't be a single bust in the history of football. So in the end it's luck, it's a combination of a lot of things. Either way. If you just go by the tape you have to question this move because Miles simply outplayed him. You can't argue that. You can't say that Martin was better this preseason. And like I said earlier, if you want a different type of safety, an Antonio Allen replacement, somebody who can come in on passing downs and cover TE's and slot receivers or RB's, then Martin is your guy. Miles can't do that. So from that perspective it would make sense to me. I don't look at this long term that this was a mistake, that this was the wrong move to make. We'll see how it works out. I just want to know why they did it, what their plans are. Were they unhappy with Miles? What did they see in Martin? What will his role be vs Rontez? Were they just looking for a differen type of safety? Somebody who can take AA's spot? That's all. We will get those answers soon hopefully, I want to hear the presser, maybe even pregame or postgame at the very latest and here what Bowles has to say about this. Explain this move to us and let's move on. No harm no foul. Nobody is losing confidence in our CS/FO, nobody is questioning their motives. We're all in on Macc and Bowles. I wouldn't want anybody else to run this franchise, anybody else to coach this team.
They did not trade for Posey...fcol They traded back in the third round, acquiring 2 extra picks, and Posey. Sheesh
No need to get defensive. I was just suggesting that your faith in GMs in general might be a little misplaced, considering the regular screw-ups we see them make (or at least, the screw-ups that our GMs make).
Most GM's are dumbasses. Period. Vernon fucking Gholston was a consensus first round pick. Sure the Jests were the retards that actually gave him 30 million dollars, but....someone else would have. Yet, players like Jordy Nelson, whose film...was telling drop to the second round.. (The Jets bring in Brett Favre, throw Penny overboard, then draft Gholston, and Keller, while passing on Nelson.)
The issue is you're making it seem like the point of the trade was to acquire Posey, which is horribly inaccurate, and then holding it against the front office because they cut him.
I don't think anyone in a FO is a dumbass. It's just not a precise science. One of the reasons in football are the mental and physical dimension of the game. Plus it's also hard to predict how an individual player will deal with new found wealth. For example Jamarcus Russell. If someone like Stephen Hill has intangibles but when he gets on an NFL field just doesn't have the heart for it that's sometimes hard to predict. Obviously the Jets drafted him thinking they could develop him. Some talents like with a Wr running good routes, etc. work differently in the NFL. You might have good tape and look good in the combine but when you're covered by NFL caliber Dbs it's another story. IMO there is way too much emphasis put on the combine and stats: the reason Vern was selected so high and over Mayo who has had a very good career.
First of all, stop acting like you made the deal happen. You don't know more than anyone else here about what those intentions were. Maybe they traded back because they wanted Posey, maybe they traded back because...they just wanted an additional draft pick late. Nobody knows. We could have done the same deal with any other team where Posey wasn't going to be included obviously. You can spin it all day however you like, that's not how value works in the NFL. We gave something up to get something in return, that's the fact. I'm sure Macc had hopes that Posey would make the team and help us. He didn't. I don't understand what you're arguing about. Fine, let's assume we did the Texans a favor, that Posey had zero value, we just took him on. You completely missed the entire point. The point is that people in the NFL make mistakes and that you can and should question every move they make. You don't have to be a GM to do that. Saying "well they get paid for it, they must know, we don't know anything and we're always wrong" just makes no sense. That was my issue. Nobody cares about Posey, I could have mentioned dozens of other transactions instead, that was just the most recent one we made. To keep harping on this Posey crap like that has anything to do with the original point I was trying to make, I don't get it.
Miles is the equivalent to Jets fans as that WR we had a few years ago Spandola can't even remember his name, but everybody was in a uproar over releasing him, dudes been setting the NFL on fire ever since.... ...oh wait
The fans followed these players and both were good exhibition game performers. So they became fan favorites. But for fringe players the GMs and HCs are looking for specialized play and specific abilities. It's not just overall performance. Sometimes the fans could be right about this. They see effort, the ability to make plays, etc. vs a certain talent or again numbers. It's great to have winning players who like to play football even if they don't have elite speed or strength.
