Stafford got PAID!!!! http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/04/24/417-million-guaranteed-for-stafford/ Wow. It’s done. The Lions have agreed to terms with quarterback Matthew Stafford. According to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Stafford’s deal is worth $78 million over six years, with $41.7 million guaranteed. Wow. UPDATE: Peter King of SI.com has the base at $72 million, with a maximum value of $78 million based on incentives. Chris Mortensen of ESPN says the max is $74 million. All have the guarantee at $41.7 million.
Personally, I think Sanchez would be the best pick for them, considering their current QBs are Marc Bulger, Kyle Boller, and Brock Berlin. You can give Bulger one more year to see if he has anything at all left while Sanchez is groomed. When you don't have a franchise QB, I think you need to take one. Plus, with the OT depth in this draft, they can probably get a Beatty or a Loadholt in round 2.
I see the Rams talking Sanchez and then trading him. No team wants to move up to #2 but they do want Sanchez. This would be a great moove for them and force everyones hands.
Or a huge blunder if the guy you wnats gets away and no one is willing to offer what you thought. Also, ESPN has reported this morning that The Rams have paid for plane tickest for a few of the top prospects, not jsut Sanchez. Only a few more hours till this can stop and we all start arguing about the Jets again instead of prospects.
Hopefully three QBs go before we pick so more talent drops to us. Right now I am hoping that we can trade up to get Andre Smith for our 1st and 3rd picks if he falls in the 11-13 range. Otherwise I hope we trade down.
JEEESUS!!hmy: These rookie contracts are out of the realm of insanity at this point. The league seriously needs to put an end to this shit.
A couple months ago Andre Smith was a possibility to be the first player selected in the entire draft. With Smith and Mangold on the same OL, the jets can run the ball all day. There is no way anyone would make a goal line stand against that. Trading down and grabbing Beatty might be a good value as well. The OL talent in this draft is incredible.
I'm sure the Rams can't afford the price of a plane ticket to send out a smokescreen, so he's gotta be their man! I really do hope someone other than the Jets takes him - I live in Trojan Country but don't drink the Kool Aid. Cassel is a product of being Brady's understudy and watching film - legal or illegally taped more than he is of Pete Carrol's wisdom and tutelage which was obviously missed by Leinart and Booty.
You are on to something. It might not be a popular move, so I didn't even bring it up prior to this thread (perhaps this topic was discussed in another thread; didn't really look), but I think it would be smart for the Jets to draft a tackle in the 1st round. Woody is really not an ideal right tackle and Ferguson might be better suited to play on the right side. Normally when you draft a tackle in the 1st round, he starts as a rookie. Maybe the Jets can draft a tackle and keep Woody on board as a backup (maybe just cut him if the cap hit is not awful). Maybe start the rookie at RT and leave Ferguson at left tackle? I don't know. It's something the Jets should consider at least. Failing that, I am one of the rare posters here who would be all for the Jets rolling the dice on boom-or-bust speed merchant Heyward-Bey.
Also, keep in mind that D'Brick's rookie contract will be up within the next two years. He may not be worth the salary cap hit especially if we can get a cheaper replacement while D'Brick still has trade value. D'Brick could also become an excellent LG depending on what happens with the rest of our line.
Why would it be that bad to trade 4 spots for a potential star OT? He'd only have to sit/learn for one season. Starting next year, we see huge cap savings without Woody on the roster (if a cap even exists at that point). He's not a young man, and an upgrade at mid-round money would be a huge win for us. I don't know that I like the added pick going away, but OT is one of the best positions to pick in the 1st.
Left guard maybe. He'd have to bulk up a bit more. But moving him to guard is certainly worth consideration.
Taking an OL is not the worst idea but I don't see it since we have pressing needs an OL is not one of them. Regarding Sanchez, the Rams are a real possibility. Then, Bulger comes to the jets. I can see how this would work out given the deep draft for OL--the rams can pick up an LT later.
No they aren't. Stafford just got 41 MilG/70+ Possible. Bulger's contract extension has about 4 years 24mil guar. left on it.... If you take Sanchez at 2, you're looking at about 10% less than what the Lions just gave up... St.L would be committing cap suicide.
I'd be fine if they took an OT in the first round. The Jets still have no depth and are an injury anywhere on the line from trouble. If they somehow got Smith on the 17 (not going to happen) it'd be an amazing pickup from the standpoint of both talent and depth. Then an injury anywhere but C would be covered and Smith would likely start for them from day one somewhere.
