No offense, but Rex's job as HC isn't to run the offense or design offensive plays. Most HCs do not call plays unless it's their specialty. This is why Rex is going to call defense. It's the OC's job to hold the offense accountable and call the right plays. That has nothing to do with Rex needing someone to bail him out. That's a bit shortsighted, if you ask me. It's not Rex's fault the Jets hired a failed QB coach as OC (shotty), and a failed OC as QB coach (Cavanaugh). The OC's JOB is to "bail out" the HC by running the offense. If he doesn't, then the Jets didn't hire the right person to fill the position.

And to think he hasn't been trying to learn as much as possible is a bit silly. Who has he had to learn from? Schottenheimer? Sparano? No offense but that's like trying to learn how to read from a blind man.

I agree 100%, Rex is awesome, but at the end of the day he's the HC, not the DC. I honestly don't think he's learned jack shit about offenses in his 5 years here. If that is true, he's fucking stubborn. Watching Schottenheimer coach the offense would be all I needed to make myself more knowledgeable on the offensive side of the ball

I don't want Rex fired because of what will happen to the D once he leaves. It could be in shambles.

Hopefully focusing on the D won't cause him to lose the pulse of the "Team" like he said he did in 2011.

The same can be said for Bellidouche until he got himself a HOF QB and handed the reigns over to a proven OC.

Schotty was thrust upon Rex. Sparano was a Rex pick but not much better was available either. MM is a good pick for OC.

Now either Sanchez needs to do a 180 or Rex needs a better QB. How long would Belli have lasted in NE after a couple more 511 seasons? Now he's an offensive genius. No he isn't - he just has a really good QB. And that will be proven when Belli retires 7 seconds after Brady does....

I was just gonna say this LOL

By this theory, Bellicheck is a shitty ass coach and should have been fired :breakdance:

It's easy for a coach not to know anything about the offense when you have a QB like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Each head coach has his own set of strengths and weaknesses. Rex's strength is defense and his weakness is offense. That's why you have an OC and with MM, he won't need to worry about the offense. Every player that comes through our facility loves Rex. They all love playing for him. That's what a solid head coach brings

Rex's job isn't to run the offense or to run the defense. His job is to make sure both are operating at their best. His defense has a new DC but it's an in-house guy that Rex & all the players are familiar with.

Rex shouldn't be knee deep on defense & just passing the buck on offense to his OC. We all acknowledge the defense will be better than offense this season. It's well accepted that Rex is a defensive mastermind. Aren't those also the qualifications/accomplishments for a great DC though?

This D needs input from Rex but the offense is in even bigger need. The offense is a whole new scheme, there's been an instance of locker room drama there, and the majority of the payroll is on the offensive side of the ball. Rex & every HC in the league should be focused on their team's weaknesses. Not just playing around where they feel most comfortable.

There's nothing wrong with Defense > Offense. But when offense is so bad that it drags down the entire team, Rex needs to be more focused there to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Any coach in the league right now would have failed with that offense we had. Tanny managed to draft zero depth everywhere and we had Sanchez throwing interceptions and fumbling like it was going out of style. Sparano had no clue what he was doing either.

Injuries, lack of depth and talent, and terrible coordinating is not on Rex. He did all he could to stop the bleeding. A head coach can only go as far as the talent put on the field. Which is where Tanny failed miserably.

Rex accepted the job with Schotty as OC. However, Schotty still reported to Rex. The offenses success/failure with any OC is on Rex. The same way the defenses success/failure with any DC is on Rex. That's all I'm saying here.

As to whether BB is a good coach or lucky to have a job, I'm not sure why it applies to anything I've said. Unless you're implying Rex should not be given any blame for offensive failures until a Brady-type talent shows up.

Okay, so why do you think Rex is not focused on improving the offense? He didn't expect it to turn completely to shit last year. With players like Holmes and Keller getting hurt, Rex would have had to be psychic to know that the offense would get devastated with injuries and suck that badly. A healthy offense last year would have made a big difference (probably 2-3 wins).

There are some facts in here mixed with assumptions. There were injuries, & lack of depth/talent.

However, I don't understand why terrible coordinating is not on Rex. What kind of HC is is not responsible for the success/failure of his coordinators? If Rex isn't responsible for their failures then he shouldn't be taking credit for their success either. Why does it not go both ways?

Although, I'm in the minority, I don't believe that Rex got the most out of that offense. Just like the majority, I believe Rex got that defense to overachieve.

That offense was a mess when it came to execution and game plan also.

I think Rex is a great coach put in an unfair situation.

If the Jets fired Mike T., then they should have doen it with Rex instead of making him a lame duck coach much like Sparano was for the Dolphins once they flirted with Harbaugh.

It's hard to expect a great season with so much turnover on the roster that is strapped for cap room AND the possiblity of Revis getting traded. It would be hard on any coach to overcome that and be evaluated with less talent.

    Completely agree here.

Rex, in my eyes, is an outstanding coach. Has some flaws, as with any coach, but a great coach. If he were to be fired, people would be lining up to bring him in.

Did I say Rex is not focused on offense? No I did not. I stated that this season he needs to be putting more time/effort on offense because that side is going through major coaching changes.

Also stated that it's time for him to stop getting free passes when the offense fails. If his offense fails this season, let's move some of the ire from MM over to Rex also. Because in my opinion (which is the minority apparently) the offense & defense success and failures both fall on the head coach.

“I enjoy it,” Ryan said. “There’s no question. I enjoy the meetings, which I’ll be more involved in. I love it, because that’s my roots. I think that any coach loves teaching. That gives me an opportunity to teach and to be really more hands-on with that unit.”

“One thing I know for sure about this football team — since I’ve been here and as long as I’ll ever be here — is we will be one of the premier defenses in the league,” Ryan said. “The Jet way is playing great defense.”

I thought these two quotes in the article were interesting. Rex is a D geek it's just his his make up and perspective on football. This is why a Rex schemed and called D is a perennial top 5 and so fun to watch when the ears are pinned back and the players are swarming to the ball.

Sadly they also hint at Rex's limitations for taking a team all the way on his own as a HC. He seems reluctant to move from his comfort zone and skill set into developing and evolving to the guy. I can understand the reluctance just show what you are great at but just such a lost opportunity for the team and Rex. I really believe he needs to get more interested in the O because surely his defensive mind can work out the potential flaws in any O scheme and provide valuable feedback to MM

I'm a fan of Rex, his attitude, openness building up of players even when that's turnedout to be hollow on occasion. I want to see him lead the Jets to SB victory - not making predictions here - and to do that he needs to make the next move.

There are lots of people who balk at going into the unknown and challenging their boundaries who ultimately lose out. I'm a personal example -often suggested to take on a mid manager role but not doing so as I feel my work skills whilst very competent are relatively one one dimensional

Forget great season. I'm looking at 8-8 as a big success & so will many other Jet fans once they step back and look at the Jets roster/salary-cap/etc.

Am I giving off that vibe that I'm expecting a playoff run from Rex here? That's not my intention at all. I'm only stating he's been given zero blame for offensive failures for his entire coaching regime. When is it time for him to accept blame for offensive failure?

A good head coach is involved in all facets of the job,,,that's def ,off,,and special teams! If Rex wants to call the def ,I could care less,,,maybe if I were Dennis Thurman I would care,,,,but Rex needs to be involved n all 3,,,,, if you want to talk about the clock management and use of timeouts and 2 minute offense that's another can of worms .

Oh def without Rex our defense wouldnt be shit, Think about it.... half of our defense with the exception of Revis,Cro,Harris and Wilk (and hopefully Coples) are all midlevel talent and some scrubs. He is good at making midlevel or scrub defensive talent look like stars. He is arguably the best D coach in the league def in the top 3. but he shouldnt be involved in the offense this is what OCs and assistant coaches are for. Go back and look at all the coaches who are considered great who have been in the league for over 6-10 years , look at there stats , they all took years to adapt and figure things out and get better including Bill Belichik. A head coach needs to know what his strengths are and leave the rest to the other highly paid members of the coaching staff, he cant do everything and nor should he be

He hasn't been a HC in 4 years why start now. DC is his bread and butter.

I don't get what's wrong with Rex letting an OC call the plays or design the plays if he thinks the OC can do better than him. I'm sure he's still involved in the offense and the direction he wants it to go to be paired with his defense, but I'd much rather him call plays defensively than offensively. Yeah let's take our defensive HC and have him call offensive plays too so he can be an "all around coach".

Each coach has strengths and weaknesses. They direct the O, D and ST and usually wherever they were brought up from is where they have the most impact/call plays. The other areas you get coordinators to their jobs.

This has been a point all along. How come Rex seems to have no accountability? The people above him are held accountable. And they got fired. The people below him were held accountable. And they got fired. Rex gets a free pass. He "willed" the team to their wins, while Tanny and Sporano are to blame for the losses, even though Rex had a hand in hiring Sporano. Some people even go as far as to say that it is Tanny's fault that Rex played the veterans.
