They were going to non-tender Church after this season anyways. They got a warm body who if he plays well can be a 30HR/100RBI guy. If he dosen't play well they'll non-tender him at the end of the year and be in the exact same spot if they kept Church.
This ignores that Church has been a better player than Francoeur during their careers. The fact that Manuel tried everything he could to not play Church reflects poorly on Manuel, not on Church.
