Maybe San Diego signed him with the intent on trading him to us. Wisenhut posts here every once in a while, maybe he saw an opportunity. This thread has legs. _
For all the "Geno is better than Mettenberger" people..if Geno was released today , does he get claimed on waivers by any team?
3 way trade with SD and SF where we get both Mettenberger and Kaep, while Fitz goes to SD for 8 games as FA (under the table deal with the Jets wink wink) then SF gets him for the remaining 8 games, totally fair deal. It could happen.
Any position but QB I'd agree, more or less. QB we need a young guy to be the QB for the next 10-15 years. Got to keep stabbing at it till you find him...of course with the Jets luck at QB women may be playing in the NFL before we find one.
to kind of followup on my previous point. I don't know if there is any other team in the league (baring recent expansion teams) that hasn't had more than 1 QB In their history as their starter for at least part of 10 seasons. The Jets have only had two QB's in 55 years or so that have played as many as 8 seasons as a starter, including partial seasons (Namath was a starter for 12 seasons, but 8 of those were partial seasons.
Just for the record. When we do see the first woman play in the NFL (and it will happen eventually, maybe not for decades, but it will happen) I'd bet bottom dollar the first will be as a kicker. I've seen women with tremendously strong legs who could, with the proper training and experience, excel as a place kicker or punter.
Patriots - Brady is the only one. Grogan was with the team for 15 years but only started half the games in a season for them 7 times. Bledsoe was the guy for 8 seasons. Fins - Marino and Griese. Bills - Kelly and Ferguson but Ferguson made the playoffs just 3 times in 12 years and won only a single playoff game, against the Jets in 1981. I don't think it's that unusual for a team to have trouble finding a QB. I think it's really painful to Jets fans because our three best QB's, Namath, O'Brien and Chad were all crippled by injuries in their prime and so we never got the return on a franchise QB that you want after Namath's SB win in 1969. The last Browns QB to go 10 seasons as starter was Otto Graham from 1946 to 1955. Now that's a dry spell. The Raiders have never had a 10 year QB in franchise history and they were pretty good until Al Davis lost it. The Redskins haven't had a 10 year starter at QB since 1951 - Sammy Baugh. The Vikings have had one 10 year plus guy in Fran Tarkenton and they had to reacquire him in a trade after letting him go to the Giants in his prime to make that happen. The Lions have never had a 10 year QB. Sid Luckman played 11 years for the Bears and probably qualifies but the game was different when he played and often the QB was not on the field on the first play on offense, with just running backs in the formation. In 1943 Luckman played in 10 games for the Bears, starting 3 and lead the NFL in TD passes, YPA and every other positive passing stat. The Bears have had no other QB's start 10 years for them and they're the oldest franchise in the NFL. Matt Ryan is the Falcons all time leader in consecutive seasons as starter with 8 going into next year. Steve Bartkowski had 9 seasons with an injury year near the end. The Bucs have never had anybody start more than 5 seasons for them, with Doug Williams, Vinny Testaverde and Trent Dilfer tied there. The Seahawks have never had a 10 year starter. The Rams have never had a 10 year starter.
Nice post. It's a rare thing to have a quarterback that can play year in and year out. Must be nice. Peyton Manning, whatever you think of him, was one tough son of a bitch.
Hopefully thats sarcasm. Rex has enough ways to lose his current job without bringing in one of the tops reasons he lost his last one.
Well if you're excluding QB's who started less than 1/2 the games in a season then the Jets have never had a QB for 10 seasons.
Ken O'Brien wore a Jet jersey for 10 of his 11 years in the NFL. While he was benched for Browning Nagle, I would chalk that up to bad coaching.
Man I loved Browning Nagle. I mean I wanted to. We were visiting friends down in DC when he had that awesome game in Atlanta, I think the Peach Dome was brand new. And Parcells said let's not put him in Canton yet, I think that's where Quentin Tarrantino got the line "let's not go sucking each other's dick just yet". Man he was bad but looking back at his stats I didn't realize just how bad. 49% comp rate, 8 TDs to 20 INTs. Not quite Vernon Gholston or Blair Thomas but ooooofff. _
Jets failed to protect O'Brien, and I hate to say it but the same with Sanchez in 2011 when he was starting to actually show the ability to be a good quarterback. Von Miller and Ngata ended any hope of that happening.
That 2011 Ravens game was when I officially started to look at Sanchez differently. It wasn't so much that he played poorly, the oline was terrible that day. But it's the fact that he looked scared and looked as if he didn't want to go back in the game. Can't have my franchise QB being a bitch, so that was that.
