on that note...... we may be close in age, as he was my favorite (with Walker my real fav) at the time, when I was a kid. but.....My dad was a mechanic at JFK and saw Gastineau waiting for a flight. (84-85?) My dad knew I loved him (I used to do the stupid sack dance whenever he did) and asked "for an autograph for my son". There was no one else around, he wasn't being heckled, so my dad asked again saying "he's 10, and you're his hero". Mark said no...... so my dad responded "Go F-yourself". He didn't tell me that story until I was older, and I thought it was hilarious that my pop told a juiced up NFL linemen to go F-himself :breakdance::beer:
That's awesome, I guess my dad caught him right after he bagged a few chicks. A friend of mine has a similar story as yours but remove Gastineau and replace with Reggie Jackson.
Being in my 20's, I have no recollection of Gastineau, but I thought a lot of Jets fans hated him due to 1986 and other instances. Judging from this thread, I guess not. Surprised they're only doing two this year. In 2010 they had 6, 2011 4, so I guess maybe starting next year they'll only do one? Who knows. Looking forward to when Wayne Chrebet and Mo Lewis get the respect they deserve.
HA, actually my dad had the same experience w/ Reggie also....... and I loved some Reggie Jackson as a kid.
My top six that need to be added. Kyle Clifton played linebacker for thirteen seasons in the National Football League for the New York Jets. He led the NFL in tackles with 199 in 1988. In nine of his seasons, he recorded over 100 tackles. His career totals are 1,484 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 12 interceptions, and 37 pass deflections. Pat Leahy played 18 seasons in the NFL and every one of them with the Jets. He was a kicker through the 1970s and 80s and finished his career with a field goal percentage of 71.4. Winston Hill was a dominant Jets offensive tackle for 13 seasons, having made eight Pro Bowls (no Jet can say this, yet). Mo Lewis was a dominant linebacker for the Jets, playing with them for all 13 seasons of his career. He played 200 games as a Jet, the third-most in franchise history, and started every game in 11 of his 13 seasons. Mickey Shuler was a Jets tight end for 12 seasons and is tied for third on their all-time receptions list. He made two Pro Bowls and his best season was in 1985 when he caught 76 passes for 879 yards. He finished his career with 5,100 receiving yards and caught at least one reception in 86 straight games. Last but not least, Wayne Chrebet. He is one of the greatest wide receivers in Jets history, having ended his career short after numerous concussions. When I was younger my favorite players were Clifton and Shuler, later it was Chrebet (the little BIG man). My favorite player of today is by far Mangold.
Walker yes! Gastineau... a great pass rusher but in my opinion is responsible for the worst loss in Jets history, and time has not healed hte wound
Chrebet will definitely be selected, sometime in the near future Leahy will be the first kicker, although Jim Turner deserves some recognition Shuler will also get in Clifton and Lewis were great Jets but I think guys like Matt Snell, Marty Lyons & Randy Rasmussen are likely to get in first. Bruce Harper, Marvin Powell & Emerson Boozer should be considered Chad Pennington ? Hill is already in BTW
I understand that it's a Ring of Honor and not retiring of numbers but at some point some guys are gonna have to miss the cut. The Sack Exchange guys were before my time but I feel like since the Jets actually retired Klecko's number (he deserves an outstanding recognition from what I know from my elders) which is obviously the highest honor, the group of the Sack Exchange should be recognized as one. From then on, recognize maybe the best at each position or something. I like that they do this btw, I'm not complaining, just seems like there's a lot of guys that sound like they'd have to be honored with the way things are going.
Best Jets Pick Ever That is what I thought about Gastineau at first. I wanted the Jets to take him in the 79 draft. But first they took Lyons. Then when they took Gastineau I was happy. He was 6'5 265 and ran a 4.5 40 unheard of at the time for any defensive player. Heck cornerbacks were runnin 4.6 4.8 forties. Then he justified the Jets pick when he became a sack artist. But then he went wacky with the whole Brigette Neilsen stuff and kicking his wife to the curb. It will be interesting how the fans react the night he get his ring of honor. It could be mixed but I think it will be a full circle kind of thing and some forgiveness.
Wayne Chrebet? Maybe if this is the Ring of Popularity. I love the guy too, but he was never even the best receiver on his own team.
