Take a look at this: https://x.com/jackstollow/status/1967277455594676499 I am no Clemons fan, but this is absolute bullshit call. He does not touch his helmet at all, avoids the actual hit, but stops and actually holds to stop Allen from falling, who is desperately faking a fall, then lets go and jumps to the side. Believe me, I would love to rip Clemons a new asshole as much as everyone else. Heck is everyone is doing it, and it it is fun to join. But I have to call spade a spade: he did nothing wrong here. Allen flopped like a fish and piece of shit garbage refs called a bullshit foul.
It’s not really a bullshit call in the sense that they call that all the time. There’s no reason for Clemons to hit him at all. He had plenty of time to pull up. If you wanna argue philosophically, yeah it’s bullshit they call RTP on non violent, non consequential hits. But everyone knows you can’t sneeze on the QB. No reason for him to touch him.
Not all the time. When Fields slid and got hit much worse it wasn't called. The other shot I have of this is here, 26s. By the time Allen released, Clemons is right there, and is in fact trying to stop and avoid the hit and is holding Allen like a baby, while Allen is jumping back while jerking his head WWE style and then pointing to his head to the refs. I don't know, JV, this is a tough call on the guy IMO.
Here, we need to add one more to the list: https://x.com/WokeeJa/status/1967276302416875986 Clemons sure had his share of dumb plays, but this is not one of them. He and the Jets got screwed by the refs on this one and Allen with another WWE performance.
You don't need any kind of head contact to have roughing the passer. Allen had completed his follow through and both arms were down when the bonehead creamed him. Guilty! The clip may have fooled you but it shows he didn't fool Glenn, and he was there.
Allen always gets the calls and everyone on the Jets team knew that and they discussed it. It's a fact of life that must be accepted and it sucks.
Then why do they have stats for "QB hits" that aren't sacks for the defense? Clemons sucks, but I agree with @Borat, this was a terrible call. However, because it's the reigning MVP, Allen is going to get it every single time - just like Brady, Mahomes, etc (with the exception of Cam. He was an MVP who took a ton of "illegal hits" that didn't draw flags). Anyone remember when Zack Wilson got picked up and slammed by a Broncos D lineman few years ago? Of course no flag.....
And if you KNOW you are going to get slapped with the call then you KNOW not to even be IN the vicinity! You can't claim that they "know" the QB's are getting preferential treatment then cry foul when some NY Jets bonehead defender put his hands on the QB even if it's to pat his ass on the way by! I mean, seriously? If you KNOW they are going to call a fart in the wind, in the QB's direction, then don't be NEAR the QB as he's 2 yards out of bounds already! Simple logic. Doesn't matter what you or I think. They've already got a record number of backup QB's playing, 2 weeks in, so it's only going to get worse. Hell, you might not even be able to run BY the QB for fear the wind draft will knock them off their feet and draw 15 yards!
When I say vicinity, how far were they out of bounds before Clemons put his hands on Allen? What, 2 yards? 3? Far enough that he didn't even need to raise his hands. He wasn't about to sack him nor was he trying to push him out of bounds. He was already there, which is why the flag came. Sorry, I should have been a tad more clear what I meant.
@mezzavo, maybe we are talking about different plays? The Allen/Clemons hit was in the middle of the field, no where close to the sideline.
As I predicted before the season started, the jets CANNOT/WILL NOT stop the run in 2025. McDonald and Sherwood are BOTH too small and too light for DE and LB in today's NFL. Yeah, Sherwood made many tackles last year, but never at the line of scrimmage. He is a safety playing LB. McDonald is a 3rd down rusher at best. Until the jets admit that Douglas wasted the 15th overall on him, and keep him off the fields until sure passing downs, the jets will get it run down their throat. Clemons and McGregor are worthless. Isn't there someone, anyone, who plays DE on the practice squad of a good team we could sign? Better than the status quo.
