Thats absurd, we had the worst offense I've ever seen in 2012 and still won 6 games, we would NEVER go 4-12 under Rex.
This is a great explanation as to how what happened to the Texans came about. Too many big free agent contracts, and big extensions to injury risk players. As talented as their roster seemed, it was similar to what happened to the Jets in 2011. They had a lot of big name guys who started, but too little depth and too few role players. http://grantland.com/the-triangle/how-the-texans-fell-from-grace/ This is what makes Idzik's strategy so appealing, and I would be so surprised if we tanked this season unless we were the most unlucky, injury riddled team in recent memory.
That is my logic as well, and I don't disagree with you. That being said, it isn't impossible. The NFL is a crazy league. We had some good luck last year. Week 1 was some great luck- and that win likely gave us confidence going forward. The penalty against NE was some luck as well (albeit there should've been PI called against NE that would've made the FG attempt unnecessary). We could have just as easily been 6-10 instead of 8-8. Our point differential was most similar to those in the 4-12 range. Last year we had a knack for pulling out wins in close games. Is that something Rex does? Or is that luck? Probably a bit of both- but there is no denying we need to improve a TON to be a contender next year.
Let's look at it this way: Last year's team strength was the defense. If the defense is working, the score will likely be closer - win or lose. If the defense is having a rough time of it, we're hosed and it's a blowout. Assuming those statements are true, that sheds some light on your assertion above - that we won a lot of close games. My conclusion would be that winning close games was the intention and not necessarily completely luck.
Why are U name calling? I am just a frustrated NYJ fan probably double or maybe even triple the years U have been on this earth stating my opinion?
That's ridiculous. No coach ever, has said to his team "Let's go out and win this one by 3". They may play conservative at times, but they always hope for a blowout.
Kurt is right. The Jets have so much invested in their young players right now. If they're right, it will pay big dividends. If not, it still won't hurt a ton because the Jets still have so much money they can use to fill holes at any time. This draft is huge for us. We need better players at the bottom of the roster to play on special teams, and for our young players to improve. The Jets have upgraded quarterback and receiver. Very little else has been done, but I don't think you can safely say OL or even DB are downgrades. Milliner will be better with an offseason, and Cromartie played horribly last season. No reason Patterson or even Walls can't be mediocre and still lead to an improved secondary. Giacomini may be a slight downgrade, but the line needed to be shaken up a little bit, and his skillset could also lead to an improved line. The jury is out. If the young players improve, the Jets could be better next season with cap space. However, the Jets probably were really the caliber of a 6-7 win team last season based on performance in close games, so there would still have to be a significant amount of improvement to get to playoff-level. Still plenty of time left in the offseason. Even if most of the players are gone.
