What about the 1981 playoff loss to Buffalo??????????? I can't believe it's not even on your list. I think this game ranks in the top 3 to be sure. Jets in the playoffs for the first time since 1969...Jets down in this game 24-0!!!!.......Todd leads Jets in an unbelievable comeback attempt in front of an insane Jets crowd, only to be done in on a last second interception from Todd to Buffalo saftyman Bill Simpson. And your "fake spike" game being ranked #1????????...laughable. If you haven't been around to witness ALL the Jets setbacks since the beginning, then you really shouldn't be making a list like this. If you ARE old enough to remember all the moments, then you missed the boat here in a few cases. However, MOST of your list IS accurate.
You have to be Long Time Jet Fan in disguise, right? Why have your butt in a pucker over one of the most respected posters on the board? Your line of agitation is your right, but it's basis seems unfounded.
Go ahead and kiss this "respected" posters ass. The fact that you idolize this poster is what makes him as pretentious as he's become. By the way, I was just stating an opinion. God forbid I should ever find fault with this most "respected" master of the GangGreen message board.
Charming, as always. I?m surprised you even opened this thread since you hate my titles so much. You are kinda like those people that say they hate the Howard Stern show, yet listen every day to "monitor" how bad it is. I think you may be secretly in love with me. I don?t go for these back-door shenanigans. Sure, I'm flattered, maybe even a little bit curious, but the answer is no. (Credit - Homer Simpson) With regard to your reply....I did consider that game, as I have chronicled it in my post 100 (which I am sure you have committed to memory). However, given that we did trail 24-0 in that game, I did not see fit to add it. I could make an entire top 10 list of great failed comebacks. I?ll put that fake spike game up against anything you have to offer. It was more shattering to the franchise than any other loss?.IMO. Sorry, that I have not been witness to every game since the franchise inception, but the reality of it is?..the truly horrific moments for this franchise (with the exception of maybe the Heidi Game) took place during my time as a fan (which began in 1977). Next time I?ll run my posts past you to ensure they meet with your approval, since you are the self-appointed king of Jets history. A thousand pardons my master?.
Actually, that was a pretty cool loss as losses go. The Jets were in it to the end, they played their butts off, the fans were screaming. Todd threw an interception or two, which was nothing new and nothing like taking a knee to set up a 50-yard FG attempt. It was a good way to end a season that began 0-3, and there was a lot of hope on that field for what would be coming in '82. Randy Rasmussen was playing his last game for the Jets that day, and he told me later it was one of the most thrilling and satisfying experiences he had, including Super Bowl III, simply because it was like coming out of a long dark tunnel.
That would probably be a good idea if you begin to wander into areas that you don't have full knowledge of.. And yes, I accept your pardons.
Wow - all of these positive posts in such a negative thread!! I give kudos to all of you TGG.com posters - so I will add my opinion to the BEST memories. For me it's easy... and here's why: In every game we are losing or getting blown out late in the third, EVERY Jets fan starts to think "Well, if we score here, than stop them, then score again, then get a turnover, then score again we're right back in it!!!" The only time this came true was in the Monday Night Miracle... that felt great....
awesome job as usual DBJ......excellent...however i shamefully have to agree with dorow on this one.....i think almost everyone on you rlist was worse than the fake spike.....either way marino was getting in the endzone...and either way we werent that good that year and wouldnt have done anything anyway....the cleveland game the denver game mudbowl...all these could have stopped the jets from winning a superbowl...but fake spike year wasnt gonna be a superbowl.....just my opinion...and as always i enjoyed your post....and p.s..how the hell did you get to 1000 so fast....i cant get out of the 300's
Yes, I ALSO shamefully agree. I appreciate your gutts in agreeing with me, jonnyd. The shame you feel must be unbearable. I acknowledge your sacrifice.
You Sir, Are My Hero. I Couldnt Have Compiled A Better List Myself.. It Has All The Moments Of Greatest Embarassment And Im Certain That Part Two Will Have The "spike The Ball" Play.
I think the reason I posted it #1 was the ramifications it had. It wasn't a single game loss....like the playoff games you mentioned....it was a game that completely put us into a tailspin that took three years to recover from. Also, it was the combination of the opponent (Dolphins/Marino), the late game collapse, and the memorable single play (including our incompotence to even attempt to defend) that add up to the worst. I also think that more than any other game, when people refer "Same Old Jets" they invariably reference the fake spike....a truely iconic moment. Just my opinion. I am more of a columnist, than a beat writer (i.e. I give opinions.....I don't have to worry about the facts).
I don't idolize him, but I do respect what he writes. You, I find callous and having a "bug up your rear" for somebody who is ill-deserving of the targeting. Go ahead though, if that is what you want to do. I am not going to fight his battles for him because he doesn't need me to do that.
Fake spike wasn't a game to me, it was a state of mind, a discovery for all to see of the little green serpent inside the Jets' collective soul. It was an embarrassment that echoed beyond the bounds of that particular game. Only the kneeldown in Pittsburgh and the shovel in Carolina compare, and the latter was far less important in terms of the season. If you are a Jets fan, you remember it the way you remember where you were when you heard Dana Plato died. That kind of sickness in the gut.
Most teams fans talk about their greatest moments but if you put any two Jet fans together invariably the discussion will get to heartbreak. That Browns game gets me the most. It was OVER- I mean it was OVER!!!!! Done. Finished. Still, to this day, I cant believe we lost that game. The A.J. Dewey game still haunts me. (and Walt Michaels) And if I am not mistaken the Westbrook pick was before instant replay and replays showed that he (his back) was clearly out of bounds. I remember the headline of the Post the day after the Carolina debacle was "ROCK BOTTOM" I think the fake spike itself is a little overrated but its effects on the franchise were ultimately devastating- see R. Kotite. Really good post. Nice job- now I will go hang myself.
While the Jets game vs Buffalo was competitve (in comparison to some of the playoff losses the team has had), there was nothing cool about it if you actually were experiencing it. Coming off the euphoria of the Jets clinching their first playoff berth in a decade the previous week vs. Green Bay (a game I attended and a top 5 moment in my book), this Wild Card was a 3-hour heart attack, from the opening fumble by Harper that was returned for a TD to the unbelievably painful and sudden INT that finished the season. Although Todd and Ferugson combined for 6 INTs in this game, nobody expected anything but a last minute TD pass to win the game (ala the "Todd is God" finish vs. MIA in the regular season). Ranking the playoff losses in terms of pain and also a brief descriptor: 1) 1982 Championship Game (Robbed of even the chance to watch the Jets compete like they can) 2) 1981 Wild Card vs Buffalo (Traumatic sudden death) 3) 2004 Divisional Game vs. Pittsburgh (Disgusting Giveaway Bowl I) 4) 1986 Divisional Game vs. Cleveland (Disgusting Giveaway Bowl II) 5) 1998 AFC Champ Game (Never quite felt we could win it till we lost control) 6) 1969 Divisional Game vs. Chiefs (3 tries from the 1 yard line, no dice--the end of the 60's Jets, but nobody realized it at the time) 7) 2002 Divisional Game vs. Raiders (Should've been a repeat of Brady's rise to power the year before; Chad choked, Herm should've went to Vinny early in the 2nd half) 8) 1997 Regular Season finale - Parcells blows the game with crazy calls and substitutions 9) 2000 Regular Season finale - Vinny blows 2000 season heroics (GB, NE, TB, and MIA) with Buccaneer-era INTS 10) PICK ONE (85 divisional loss to Pats, 91 loss to Houston, 2001 loss to Raiders, Fake Spike)
