The Jets are two years out from a possible Super Bowl appearance after they draft the franchise QB. How do we know this? Because no rookie QB in NFL history has ever gone to a Super Bowl, let alone won a trophy. So if Sanchez is the QB for the next two years, even assuming the Jets draft a QB in 2014, the odds are excellent the Jets don't sniff a Super Bowl until 2016 at the earliest and probably a year longer than that. The biggest problem with drafting a 1st round bust at QB is that your window for failing to get to a Super Bowl is effectively tied to him plus at least a year after you move on, probably more than that. The Jets fastest path to a potential Super Bowl probably involves cutting ties with Sanchez this year. It probably involves drafting a potential franchise QB this year. That may not be the soundest path to a Super Bowl if the Jets reach for a QB but it is their fastest path. Gotta get the next guy in here this year if you want a chance to win the Super Bowl in 2014. Probably the best move the Jets could make at this point is to identify the guy they think they can get in the 2nd round who has the most potential at QB. Spend the year teaching him the offense, with Garrard likely playing the role of starter for the year and then work the new guy in from there during the season. The reason that keeping Sanchez around is inferior to that plan is that his presence would create tension, among the fans and in the clubhouse, that would not be there otherwise and might well interfere with the Jets ability to develop the new guy. Also, you don't want the QB coach and OC spending a lot of time with Sanchez trying to fix what's broken with him when you also have the next guy in house already. That's a waste of scarce resources.
This is probably where I agree to disagree with you. To me, Sanchez is a goner. The only thing that keeps Sanchez in house is his guaranteed salary. So, if Jets are willing to guarantee his salary again next year in lieu of some cap space, (that is; take a pay cut, Nacho.) I am more than willing to see that happen - provided, there will be the next heir apparent sitting on the bench, studying. Probably it is an old-school approach, but that's how I'd like it, if I could have it my way.
amen! same for the gm and coaches. oh, wait. we just got rid of a whole bunch of those. step 1, check. step 2, suckchise.
any truth to the rumor about a mezz vs. miz match at wrestlemania in met life? be the highlight of the new football year!
Not quite....don't forget Dan Marino (went to the SB I mean)...but your point is well taken. Mezz vs. Miz match?? Are you kidding me...lol!!!! I'd throw a pulled muscle just climbing into the ring! It's amazing how fast you age after a certain number. :breakdance:
Marino was a rookie in '83. Dolphins lost to the Seahawks in the division round that year. They went to the Super Bowl in '84. I believe the only 2nd year QB's to get to a Super Bowl are Marino, Brady and Roethlisberger. I might be wrong on that though.
I hope it's too optimistic. What is happening with this team right now is actually not too bad. We get rid of the old and slow, and fill gaps with young free agents and draft picks. We play this upcoming season out, with our youth getting experience and hopefully taking steps forward to progression. We won't win that much at all, but what matters is the experience for our youth. Then, once the season is over, our franchise begins once we draft Johnny Football. That's when our happy times as Jet fans will just begin, and they'll get better as this young team progresses and continues to take steps in the right direction towards the Superbowl.
This is what it looks like when the circus is packing up to leave town. Empty tents, concession stands empty, trash everywhere. When the smoke finally clears, I don't see Ryan surviving this transition. IMO, he's more of a coach that can take an established team and run it, not a coach that can develop a young and coming roster. In the meantime, Fans need to step back from the trees and take a good look at the new forest that is being planted. It may not even happen for the Jets in 2015 but we will be closer then than we are now to truly competing consistently. If a Darksider like myself can have some faith, so can a lot of you.
I will say this. If Rex has the team competing to above six wins, there's no reason to let him go. I don't know if you could bear it if he stays, though :breakdance: The true test Idzik has is weathering the fan and media backlash. Already we have media members saying 'LOLZ, NOBODY WANTS TO BE WITH THE JETS' and fans pining for any sort of FA signing a day into FA. He weathers that effectively, we have a team.
I survived Kotite, I can survive Ryan. I don't think I'll have to much longer though so the real question will be this: Can YOU survive Ryan's departure? If Ryan can somehow get a 6-10 season out of this roster, it will depend on how competitive this team is, not the number of wins. If the team doesn't quit on Ryan, he has a outside shot at 2014 but remember, Woody only mandated ONE year with Ryan under Idzik so 2013 is indeed a make or break year. The irony is that for the team to be in position to draft the QbOTF, they have to suck in 2013 which will cost Ryan his job. Catch-22?
If we do well, couldn't we just trade up like we did for Sanchez...? But then, we'd be stuck with Sanchez (or a mediocre-ish QB) wouldn't we...
How can you even compare Kotite to Ryan? Ryan has a winning record with the Jets in regular and post seasons. Kotite was an absolute train wreck in the darkest period of Jets history i've experienced. I would guess Idzik already has an idea whether Ryan, Morningwood, Thurman, and Kotwica will be here in 2014 or not. He is using this year to douche the cap, and we'll be severely limited in talent. So if 8-8 record happens, it's a built in excuse to say good job on 8 wins considering talent, or built in excuse to fire stating 3 straight years no playoffs. All depends on how he wants to look at it, and we're not winning more than 8. Personally, i like the coaches and want them here for the rebuild. Purging them will just set us back further as a new coach will want time, and his players for his scheme.
I think it's safe to say that the days of trading up for 1 player no matter what position he played in college are over for the immediate future. Look to the future to see the plan that's possibly being implemented today. We suck in '13, high DP in '14 and perhaps a decent DP in '15. Idzik realized when he took the job that he's chief architect and demolition foreman at the same time. If anything, I can see Idzik trading down and stockpiling picks, not trading up. Those days of Jets playing real-life Madden football are over..
Its the pain and the frustration I'm talking about. I didn't like Kotite and I don't like Ryan. If Kotite didn't kill my love for the Jets, Ryan certainly won't. Kotite gave us 1-15 and made us laughing stocks. Ryan gave us back-to-back AFCCG Losses and two years removed from that, we're laughing stocks. Although logically you can't really compare the in-season performance of both teams, in the end the results were the same. In both cases, we ended up laughing stocks. Perhaps for entirely different reasons.. If we suck in '13, and it certainly looks like we will, we lose nothing by going in a different direction at the CS level just like we did in 2012 at the Management level. Miracles happen every now and then and it will take one to save Ryan's job. Woody gave Idzik a mandate to turn this around. Woody also gave Ryan a timeframe of the end of his contract to see what he can do under a new regime going in a new direction. This is a time of transition and just like most businesses, personnel upheaval is a byproduct. That goes for the bosses as well as the workers.
