He has no choice but to "pussify" the game. have you noticed many former players suing the league? Even if they don't truly care about player safety they have to make it safer for that reason and he should make it safer. Players are bigger, stronger, faster than ever before. The game is still violent and always will be but if changes were not made we'd be seeing deaths on the field and the likely death of the game.
There are way better ways to improve the safety of the game besides ruining it which is what he's doing. How about investing more $$ in improving the equipment (particularly helmets), educating players/coaches/referees more and to keep a careful eye on head injuries, how about investing more in head injury research or on life after football? They have made some strides in healthcare for retired players but only recently after the players* fought for it (and Goodell reluctantly obliged.) I don't claim to be an expert in the things I brought up but I do know there are people who are experts in them (Doctors) and are furious at Goodell. Schlareth (sp?) is furious at Goodell about the helmet issue particularly. If he truly cared about the safety of players he would be much more consistent in the fining of his players, but he doesn't care about that he's using "safety" as a tool to assert his power or something, show who's boss etc. His inconsistencies at the top have lead to inconsistencies in the calling of the games too. And I think dcm is right to some degree. More penalties = higher scoring games. How many times have we seen bullshit personal fouls particularly at the end of games in the name of "player safety" that ultimately lead to scoring drives or at least chances to win/make the game more exciting for the people who don't normally care/understand these things. These same good hard defensive hits aren't called earlier in games- what the hell? THIS IS TO PROTECT THE PLAYERS BUT WHEN A OL IS SO CONCUSSED HE'S WOBBLING AROUND THE FIELD LIKE A DRUNKEN SAILOR its overlooked??????? And they might as well eliminate special teams all together. The new rules have done away with kickoffs and is there EVER a punt return without a holding penalty?? Just put the ball on the 20 after kick offs and walk off 40 yards every punt please Goodell that doesn't insult our intelligence as much - jackass.
