I would like to get a true #1. The question being is it the smart move at this juncture in our rebuild when we've already invested 2 seconds on them over the last two years. Moore, Davis, and Berrios might not be the top core, but they are a decent starting three. A good TE would benefit them more than another WR, and probably benefit Zach more. The Bengals roster last year was pretty good in spite of their record. The other 3 teams in their division were 11-5 or better. Unlike us, they already had several star players on their roster.
It's looking like Mims isn't long for this team, so that's a WR opening right there. Berrios is ideally a #4 if he's back. Agreed on TE, I'd sign one who can contribute next year and draft another who can develop into a starter in 2023 and beyond.
Well maybe WR is our new DT. Mims could be the bust. Moore could be the injury case. And the next guy will start out good and get really fat.
It's not conceivable to get quality day 1 starters at all those positions in the draft. And that still doesn't address any of the other obvious holes on D. While also adding a ton more inexperience to a lineup and coaching staff already struggling with inexperience to boot. If that's JD's plan, I can guarantee now another last place finish.
It should be seen as no coincidence that as long as the Jets have put defense first, they've struggled, and this has gotten worse since the league has changed to be offense oriented. While some might point out that their last playoff appearance teams had strong defenses, neither version got to the SB, and it can be argued that the reason for that is because they neglected upgrading their offense as pieces left. With the exception of adding a stud Edge, I agree that adding more pieces on offense - a stud WR, TE, RG, C - will help more than anything else. They placed their bet on Zach as being the FQB and they have to show the conviction of that by giving him all the support they can, as Cincy, and the Chargers did. I'll be very disappointed if Douglas reverts back to the "Defense wins championships" mindset.
then what does LeFleur do with his $15/yr Corey Davis? How does our WR sets look? Davis, Jameson, Moore? Jameson, Moore, Crowder/Berrios? I get a team can't have too many good receivers and Jameson could be nice but with so many other holes, I don't know if another WR helps more than a top TE or Edge or LB. Hopefully JD can fill 5 holes with top talent this April, and that's if he doesn't turn his attention to the D early and often.
Davis is on essentially a two year deal. He’s can be cut after next season so it’s not like we have some crazy long term commitment to him.
I agree with your general point, but it can be argued that a better pass rush in 2009 or 2010 would've made a difference. Manning picked us apart after the two early sacks in the first AFC Championship Game and Ben made a few big throws on the run in the following season's game.
Makes no sense but the bold is the lineup Zack had his best game with. But a WR who can actually hold onto an easy pass would be real nice next season. Probably would have had and extra 3 or 4 wins if Davis didn't get a bad case of stonehands and Mims wasn't a total bust. One benefit of having so many holes on our O and D is JD can draft the BPA five times and they'd fit right into our lineup.
Yes you can look at it that way, but the odds were better that having an offense that could reliably score would've made a bigger difference.
I would love a premiere TE, cuz I’ m old fashioned back to the Mickey Shuler days, Casper. Winslow days. Take a look around NFL teams with success with solid TEs. Gronk,Kelce, Andrews, etc….Love to get a top Wr on top of that. Mims is toast.
I don’t think the Jets should go all offense by any means, nor do I think either side of the ball is more important for winning a SB. Balance wins championships. I just think it’s easier to slow build a defense en route to a championship by chipping away and adding pieces all-in style when you’re ready.
How was effort the problem? It was the drops. And he’s not a number 1, can’t handle the doubles. They never really had Davis and Moore going at once, once Moore got going, Davis was hurt. He’s absolutely fine as a 2/3 option.
This. I know everyone wants a top offense but I recall Dalas last year or maybe the yr before had Dak and a really good offense but their D couldn't stop a nosebleed and they couldn't capitalize on what Dak was doing. Plus our own '09/'10 teams with a good run game and top defense getting so close both times. So in my opinion JD ignoring the D will make for some really heart wrenching losses down the road when we can't hold a lead. So ya, D is just as important as O in the long run and I wouldn't be mad at JD for drafting some D talent high up.
I agree. I didn't mean to imply that you can only focus on offense, especially to win a SB, there has to be balance. The problem with the Jets is that for almost a decade and a half they've stubbornly held onto a "defense first" mindset and paid almost no attention to offense, and when they did, it was without any real understanding of how to build one. It was like they had this attitude of "Well if we build an "impregnable" defense, we don't really have to care about offense". Trying to rebuild upon that "foundation" requires a heavy focus on offense just to get some balance. And I've always maintained that it's easier to build a defense than an offense because it's easier to break something than to build it. That is, look at all the complexity that goes into designing an offense and the inter-player coordination needed to execute it. In contrast, all the defense has to do is interrupt or interfere with that coordination to stop the offense. Of course I'm over simplifying it to make the point. With that in mind then it's easier to find players that you can plug into your defense and succeed IMO. Bottom line: as you said, look to FA to fill some of the big holes on "D", and try to find that stud Edge in the draft, but focus on filling the holes on offense in the draft (with the exception of maybe a WR or TE in FA).
