Oh Davis doesn't get away without blame. He had some brutal drops. Ironically he made some crazy grabs over the middle in traffic while dropping the gimmes. But he also brings a lot to the table just by being on the field. He's a threat anywhere from 7 yards out. He opens up the field for others and defenses have to pay attention to him because when he's not dropping balls, he's a great WR. And he blocks extremely well. Blocking and being a threat in multiple spots on the field are two things Robby didn't provide, yet he's getting paid more to produce in the box score just as much as Davis.
liked Robby not gonna lie, I think he was criminally used at the Jets, he was just shy of 1k 3 seasons, barely missed a game through injury despite people's concerns but yes he wasn't there to block but run like the wind down the field and get on the end of some ball, he also proved in his first year at the Panthers he had more to his game than that but Gase knew best so he only used Robby when it was emergency time and I still think it is on him that JD didn't make the push to resign him as he was next to useless for what Gase wanted in his shitty dink and dunk O but I am not down on Davis as such, maybe I expected too much after the preseason games and the opening game, still we wouldn't be Jets fans without hope lol He will come back next year and hopefully get up to speed with LeFleur's O and we will start to kick on a bit, there is promise there, small but it is there.
I think every player on the roster was misused under Gase. I don't know if "misuse" is the right word for Robby though. He was only good at one thing and that one thing didn't have a role in Gase's awful offense. Not Robby's fault at all. But the fact that he's done little else to prove that he's actually a well-rounded WR is why I didn't want him back for a high price tag and I'm fine that he left. Davis is just way better all around. The drops are uncharacteristic so I'm hoping that was all mental and the product of playing with a new QB, in a new system, with a new franchise. I feel like Wilson, Carter, Moore and Davis played a total of like two games together and that's when Zach was totally lost. All those guys playing together with a confident Wilson and booth LaFleur, plus hopefully a new toy at TE or WR... I think we're gonna forget all about this first year of Davis.
We brought in (and paid) Corey Davis to be our #1. Moore is our #2. Crowder/Cole/Berrios fought it out for our #3 (it's a tie between Crowder and Berrios). This will most likely be our starting 3 going into 2022. If we draft another WR it will be a big possession guy in rounds 5-6-7, not a new #1 guy drafted high. There's no Chase/Waddle or OBJ in this draft that could come in and plant Davis or Moore on the bench.
You can draft at least 4 guys in the first round (Jameson Williams, Drake London, Olave, Garrett Wilson), all would be great additions and none of them would plant Davis or Moore on the bench. That's a really bizarre way to look at it.
if a new, highly drafted WR can't plant Davis or Moore on the bench, when are they going to play? Wait for a 4 WR set?
A guy like Jameson Williams can play in the slot or outside, just like Moore. Drafting him would be an unbelievable upgrade for the offense.
Thanks. Yeah, I doubt there will be any team calling up JD about him, but that doesn't mean Douglas couldn't include him in some deal for the purpose of sweetening a deal and getting rid of him. IDK what his problem(s) is, but Davis just doesn't seem very invested. If he were I think we'd see a better effort and better results from him. So, if he's disgruntled, JD should unload him.
So you just think he had a down year? IDK, it doesn't seem like he's putting a lot of effort out from what I've seen. Maybe he's nursing an injury, or maybe it's his pride that's hurt, but in any case he hasn't earned his money. If the Jets have a chance to upgrade the receiving corps by getting rid of Davis they should do it from where I sit, but I certainly don't have any inside info on what his problem(s) is. If Douglas and Saleh think he can still help the team and decide to keep him I'll defer to their knowledge and root for him bouncing back.
Really the only scenario to trade Davis is to use him as part of a draft day swap. But his performance this year doesn't match his contract so he probably has little to no trade value.
An under-discussed benefit to having Berrios on the team is his work ethic and tenacity. The guy goes full bore on every play. It's important to have a guy like that in various position groups to set an example for the other players. Our other WR's benefit from having Berrios nipping at their heels all the time. Hat tip to @abyzmul for alluding to this earlier.
We paid Corey, yes, but he wasn't #1. Had too many drops, caused too many TOs. Then missed half a season with a serious injury. Also Corey has only one year left at 14 mil, then a team option at 11. It's not like he is locked in for next 3 years at 15 mil +. If if he is good next year, we can bring him back for 11, or if not, we cut ties. For next year though we need a great WR in addition to Davis and Moore, who by the way was also injured a lot this year as well as last year in College. We cannot be in position again where Berrios is #1, and Smith and Montgomery has to play major role. True #1 and another solid WR need to be added. Whether it is Robinson/Mike Williams/Ridley or a 1st round WR, like Jameson Williams, we cannot keep Davis/Moore/Berrios as top 3 again. We have to learn the lessons from this year, and WR position towards the end of the season is total mess, so it has to be upgraded with a serious #1 type option.
Agreed. Do we need another high drafted WR. Sure. But is it a bigger need than TE, OL, Edge, LB, or DB? No, not even close because we just got Moore, who is a great WR. We need to use our high picks on positions that are a lot more barren than WR.
Lazard and Valdes Scantling 6'5" and 6'4" are both coming free from GB https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/wide-receiver//
The quickest way to sustained success in the NFL is to develop a franchise quarterback. What the Bengals have done around Joe Burrow should be a model for the rest of the NFL when doing so. They should’ve invested a bit more in the offensive line, but they took a second round receiver and a first round receiver after drafting him. He has a good (second round) running back and an additional second round receiver in Tyler Boyd on the roster. They also added a tackle this year in the second round. The Chargers have done the same thing. 5/6 of their top round 1-4 picks have been on offense since drafting Herbert. They had a bit of a luxury because that had stud receivers and RB in place already. We need to keep adding playmakers and support on offense. That doesn’t mean the defense gets ignored, but I’ve always felt it’s a bit easier to supplement the defense through free agency. If you can engineer a high scoring offense like those two teams have, it makes it a lot easier to play a bend but don’t break defense.
