If this game goes to the 14th, Buchholz won't be making his Saturday start, I think.

I still can't believe how many runners Tampa Bay stranded.

Runner on second, one out after a successful bunt

Last night was tough to stomach. Penny has the potential to turn this into a real shitshow tonight. Hopefully we can get back on the horse.

    Pena caught stealing

What did you expect to happen?

Even with Varitek behind the plate, Pena is going to get gunned down.

Red Sox signed 38 year old Paul Byrd to a minor league contract. He could be ready around September 1.

Bennett gave up a walk and a double, and here comes Wheeler to face Youkilis, who represents the tying run.

Hmm, that's strange. Why would they need to sign Byrd? The Sox have ridiculous pitching depth.

Playing at the trop makes this team look awful..always. If this week is anything like the last one this team is going to go from sure fire world series winner to 85 win fraud and then back again at least a few times before Sunday night.

I think there's a decent chance Byrd never sees any action. Between Wake (whenever he's back), Buchholz, Bowden, Penny, Smoltz, Daisuke, and Tazawa now I think there's still a decent chance that they find 3 guys to give them at least solid pitching for the last two months of the year. And yes, I know, you're just making fun of some phantom Sox fans claiming that they have 8 cy young candidates in their rotation and at Pawtucket. Whatever, I still think that their options are actually pretty good in trying to find guys to pitch on the days where Lester and Beckett don't go.

Oh, I'm sure they can find guys to pitch. The question is whether they can find guys to pitch reasonably well. Look at it this way: The Yanks have Sergio Mitre. That's not helpful. The Sox have 60% of their staff pitching like Sergio Mitre. That's really not helpful.

And don't forget, if you're looking to have Wakefield and Dice-K come back before rosters expand, or wanting to see Bowden/Tazawa on the club -- never mind having them be somewhat effective -- you're looking at sending Buchholz down and cutting ties with Penny or Smoltz. Or trying to move Smoltz to the pen to replace... who?

Probably best to just wait til rosters expand.

Theo should have traded Penny while he still had value.

    He wasn't a Red Sox in 2003 or 2007.
