JJ was an idiot to give up what he did. All the signs pointed to Boldin being available this past offseason and the Cards probably would have jumped all over a deal like that. Plus, RW's value wasn't anything remotely over a 3rd, maybe a high 2nd if other teams drove up the price. Did I mention that he also gave him $26 million guaranteed? BTW, RW also said that the terminology of the Dallas O was much the same as it was in Detroit. His problem is that he's just not that good. Both are extremely talented, but seem to lack the drive, focus and mental fortitude to be consistently great players. Hopefully, Braylon puts in the work to become what everyone thought he was going to be all the way back to his days at Michigan. The deal can only hamstring the Jets if Braylon plays well this year, receives a hefty contract and then reverts back to being the WR he currently is. He's always had problems with dropped balls, but I don't think I've ever seen a WR have as bad a year as he did last year. His head just didn't seem to be in it. It wasn't Cleveland, the QBs or anything else. It was simply him. And I don't think anyone is going to pony up anything remotely close to a 1 and 3 this offseason. The stench of RW fiasco is on the forefront in many GMs minds. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
There were many, but the Baltimore game probably ruined Clemens career. The ball was perfectly placed for an easy catch and then the score. He would have been untouched. Granted, it only would have given us a tie, but I would have rather seen how it trurned out in OT vs. the way it did.
I would like to bet on Edwards being very good for us because his baggage stays with him in Cleveland. I think the change in scenery to a team with a good future (and, a realistic shot at the playoffs) should be about as much motivation as anyone would need. If he is good, we will show him the money.
I haven't read the entire topic, But it would SHOCK me if Edwards didn't hold out for a better contract if he was stuck playing for 2.5 million next year.
Great analysis. When you look at the trades, drafts, and signings Tanny has made since being promoted to GM it really does show what a good job he has done. He made great trades for Thomas Jones, Lito Sheppard (still early) Kris Jenkins, and I will throw Braylon Edwards into that category as well, even the Brett Favre trade wasnt bad. He traded to move up in the draft for Revis, Sanchez, Harris, and Keller. He has good drafts every year since being the GM. The only one that might be debatable right now would be the 08 draft but we still got Keller in the first round. And his management of the salary cap is great. I'm glad we have Mike Tannenbaum as our GM.
I'd say the only thing that gives us a chance at a SB is the fact that we don't give up many points and won't require many points. Lightning may strike, who knows. I wouldn't bank on it yet, but it certainly does seem like a possibility. I know, I'm getting a little homerish in my old age.
This is one spot I'm less concerned about. The schedule has done us a big favor in terms of getting Edwards on track. Miami has a very good run D but their safties and secondary in general stinks and particularly against the deep ball. Great opportunity this week to hit a couple of big shots where Edwards is wide open. Hopefully that brings a little confidence and a little film for our opponents to have to deal with. Buffalo the following week also hasn't been that good. If they over commit to the pass they can't stop the run they have to commit one way or the other their corners aren't great without a rush and if they commit to an all out rush I think we can get Leon the ball in space. Followed by Oakland who has a very good pass D but who we don't need a lot of points against to beat and a team who will allow our D to put points on the board. Again comes Miami and than a bye. This is a great stretch to add a talent into the mix without having to force feed him. The Miami game Monday night is the tough one but it's the perfect spot since Edwards brings to the table the one thing Miami hasn't been able to deal with this year.
Without making any guarantees about Edwards, I think people over-valuing what we gave up. All this talk about Stuckey being an established talent, even a "quality starter"? If Chansi Stuckey is a quality starter, then what starter ISN'T a quality starter? I think he's been pretty awful this year overall, and has made a fair share of drops himself, which for a small-ish WR is kinda inexcusable. He is starting as a last resort, and I just don't see anything -- a true burst, great hands, toughness, fearlessness -- that leads me to believe he'll ever be a real impact player. Trusnik... even if he's the best non-skill ST'er on the team, which is questionable, it's hard to gauge just how valuable that is. If he hadn't made the one huge play this year -- in which luck played a significant role -- would people be sweating him? The draft picks are the most important part of the deal from our end, but consider too that they will likely be LATE- 3rd and 5th-round picks. Then again, the point about the deep, DEEP upcoming draft is undeniable.
To me the impact that Edwards has is on the opposing defenses and how they play our offense... even starting Monday. I don't think Edwards is going to contribute a whole hell of a lot the first month or so. What I do think he's going to do though is open up lanes for Jones, Washington, Cotchery, and Keller... AND make Sanchez's life easier as a result of that. So his mere presence on the field makes the entire offense better... and that's a good thing. That's why I feel the way I do. If any team leaves Edwards single covered, I'd bet he makes them pay.
I feel the same way about his presence on the field, but that won't last until the post-season and if he's not a vital part of the offense in the post-season, we ain't doing squat. Maybe WB is right and we are able to ease him into things and he is a playmaker for this team in December and January... but call me a skeptic.
Yeah, but Terrell Owens had 1200 yards his first year in Philly. Much unlike Roy Williams, who's problem appears to be lack of motivation spilling into running shitty routes and never being open, Braylon's problem seems to be merely a concentration error. I think we have the core of a team...and coach that will foster his abilities. Potentially even immediate dividends. I know it seems real rah-rah, but even logically thinking, it makes sense.
I posted the following in another thread and I think if dovetails into what you just posted. I want to make clear, my opinion is not taking this trade into account. I will opine on that below this : While I agree to a certain extent.......... he has left depth at plenty of positions. Look Lito and Strickland went down and there wasn't a huge dropoff even against the most prolific offensive team in the league. Pace the best OLB by quite a lot is suspended and the defense is still pretty damn good. Ellis missed the first game and the DL did't miss a beat. He has built surprising amount of depth in the secondary and @ linebacker and dare I say the depth on the DL is light years better in the last year. He has to build depth in other key areas to be sure <cough><cough> Oline. But it isn't like the Jets are devoid of guys that can step in and play. Tannenbaum has made some good signings, that didn't make a huge splash and have worked out well. Strickland although hurt really stood out as a most recent signing. Tannebaum has been better than any Jet Gm in recent memory getting upper echelon players in Revis, Harris, Mangold and Jenkins. Then he acquired guys just below that level in Leon (he is almost an upper echelon playmaker), Keller, Brick, Pace, Scott, Faneca >>>>>> Lito, Leonard . It looks like he may have hit it out of the park with Sanchez and god knows about Greene. Man I think he is damn good. That is a significantly better track record then any Jet Gm I am aware of. Dare I say that player record puts him in the top half of the league. Where he falls after that, I am not really sure. Edit: I have seen a lot posts that this is a win now team and that is true. However, look at the better players on this roster, most if not all are on the right side of 30 with many on the right side of 25. This roster if kept together is a roster that is a win in the future one as well. Barring catastrophe this roster looks good for the next 5 years that is for damn sure. This ended that post...... Now I am not saying he is the bestest GM in the league, far from it. I do think he is very good. Whomever Tannenbaum listens to, if it isn't his own intuition/eye, has a freaking keen eye for football talent. Yeah I know, every jackass on this site will bring up Gholston. Even the best GM's, with the best track records, do not hit on every player. It is statistically impossible. He has hit on a pretty sizable percentage of his top picks and when he keeps them, has hit on a good portion of the mid/late ones. With that said, my take on the Braylon Edwards trade is kind of lukewarm. I realize when motivated and on his game Edwards is a top 5 WR maybe higher. However, he has only been that for 20% of his time in the league. Not a spectacular track record to say the least. I have read plenty on him and found that he will stay late to study film/playbook and works out like a freak. Well so does TO and he is a fucking nuisance. I do like the fact that some of the harder working more popular Jets do know Edwards and vouched for him. Maybe they can keep him in line. I don't think Edwards will ever have a better opportunity with a coach such as Ryan again. If he plays hard, I am positive the environment Ryan provides will be the most fun he ever had playing football. That I am confident in. I am in wait and see mode. The Jets gave up enough where if Edwards isn't better then avg this trade leans towards the Browns side of the ledger. The Jets gave up two young players that wanted to be here and were decent parts of the team. Stuckey had a great rapport with Sanchez and coupled with Trusnik, were both well liked players. Safe to say I didn't wet my pants when I heard about this trade but the upside is tremendous. However, this trade makes the 2010+ Jets better. I just can not see the Jets bucking the trend of a rookie QB not playing in the Super Bowl, even if everything goes perfect............
If we tender him and no one makes an offer, how could it make sense for him to hold out? What would he be holding out for? A job bagging groceries?
Don't overrate the common sense and underrate the ego of your average diva receiva. If he decides he deserves more, the market isn't going to shut him up on an RFA deal.
