Fields best asset is creating with his legs which I’m sure they aren’t letting him do so he doesn’t get hurt. It also creates space against a defense that probably isn’t being created right now. There’s no upside to playing Taylor whatsoever. He’s a good (career) backup who can dink and dunk down the field without turning the ball over, but he gets us nothing. There’s hope with Fields that you see some sort of Darnold, Mayfield, Geno lightbulb click on after being thrown to the scrap heap.
The goal is to find out if Fields is more than a 1 year stopgap at the most important position on the field which will dictate the record of this team. Give him a few games to show that. But don't wait too long until the season is a wash. If he clearly sucks in the first 2-3 games then put Taylor in and see if he can salvage the season. I'd rather watch competitive football for once and the Jets haven't given us that in oh so long. Taylor may be a one year deal but I don't care. If he gives us the best chance in that one year, then ride him. Aaron Glenn doesn't;t strike me as the Robert Saleh, Joe Douglas, fill in the blank types. He seems no nonsense and moves decisively when things don't work. At least that's the impression I get and hope from how they handled things in Detroit which was very professional (the anti-Jets). If not, then tank and draft a potential franchise QB next year. That's all.
I think it’s more this last point…there is very little upside to playing Taylor, not least of which is that he’d likely get hurt with a bunch of playing time. The best plan seems to be to ride Fields…upside is he develops into a decent starter (unlikely to me but you never know), and the downside is he continues to be what he’s been and we end up with like 5-6 wins and a better draft slot in what is supposed to be a good QB draft. Which has been the story of our mediocre team for decades now it seems But still way early for this right now…we haven’t even played a preseason game yet…let’s see how things shake out. We do have a tough start to our schedule so we may know early what we can expect…
I have been following Faria's career for past few years and found him to be as reasonable as any other reporter who is watching these practices. Since we can't see for ourselves, we can at least get some idea from folks like him. I agree the sky is not falling, nor is he saying that. It's way too early now, and consistency takes time to build, it is still 1st year installation. It will take some time, and frankly I think it will take some weeks during regular season as well, not just the camp. With that said I just haven't seen anything alarming about Fields from any of the reports I read. He has up and down days, he has great days, but really no bad ones just yet. If you look across the these reports throughout the practices, looks to be about 25TDs and 1 INT. Now, this obviously does not take fumbles into account since he can't be hit, but still impressive ball security in camp. I think he can still have that breakout year this year, or an average NFL QB year, which would be a major plus for us at the position. And he is likely to get better as the season goes along too.
Not a bad plan at all. Both Fields and Taylor are prone to injury anyway so we will see both this season for sure
I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with Faria or whoever the fuck the new fangled beat reporters are but these sort of justifications sound an awful lot like what we heard as to why Nania’s weird cherry-picked stats on Zach Wilson was amazing.
Faria didn't mention 25 TDs and 1 INT. This is just what I observed based on all these reports. I am not giving it much stock to it, just saying it is not a bad thing he hasn't thrown too many picks in camp. Btw, I do not recall Zach having good ball security in camp.
This. If you’re forcing Fields to make plays with his eyes and arm then he’s going to be outplayed by a lot of people. Have to hope once he’s turned loose the gold with his legs outweigh the bad with everything else. Where I do get concerned is the ways in which he's struggling. The same ways as he was struggling 4 years ago.
Yeah…this is my view as well I don’t think Fields is the long term answer…I think we are taking a long shot to get through the season as there really weren’t very many better options out there…Rodgers playing under a new rookie staff didn’t make much sense, and of the free agents, the best of the bunch were probably the two guys the Giants got in Russel and Jameis…not sure I’d take either guy over Fields at this point, and the other trade possibility may have been to make an offer for Cousins, but, you know, FUCK him…so I wouldn’t want him regardless after how he played us and flat out admitted it… So it is what it is, but I don’t think our QB answer is on the roster and I fully expect we’ll have to draft one next year…the only question is how many games will we win and how that will affect our draft position.
