Thanks again Kurt. You guys really should be the ones covering the team in the media. This stuff is what being a football fan is all about. You guys have made being a Jet fan that much more fun. These reports are like candy.

It'd be nice to see Bender step in and do something this year. And if this Smith thing works out...super bonus. I really didn't think he had a chance to be a full-time QB. And y'all got me really excited about Haynes, although its not like our O-line is a steel curtain, more like an aluminum screen door.

That is a great point, don't take it out on your teamates, they aren't in charge of your contract. How old is Haynes? I don't know much about him so if you could give a brief rundown of his history I would appreciate it.

Lol, we have Kimo and Coleman signed to decent deals, and yet Haynes is the guy who will end up starting, you have got to love that irony. I'm glad though, the news of Ellis being non existent means we need someone else on the line who can make an impact. Can't believe he is this good, his signing was pretty low key after the slow start to his career so far. Hopefully he shows us something in pre-season. This could be the start of something great....I'm glad he exceeds expectations.

I'm glad Mangini is actually going through with his hybrid defense, last year it would have been nice to work it in some more.I wonder how Sutton will do as DC? Only time will tell I suppose. Who is our other DT in the 4-3? Ellis?

I was initially hoping Brad Smith would get more tick at WR, but with our Backup QB situation the way it is I'm glad reports on him are good so far. Looking forward to preseason games thats for sure.

Oh and to echo the sentiments of most else up here....great job fellas. Much better then the stuff people actually get paid to write about. You guys need your own blog! :)

    Thanks again,
    DD

The Gang Green Training Camp Blog. I think that is an outstanding idea. There are a few guys that do a great job with these reports. We would certainly all benefit from an informal collaboration.

Well, I read on one of the other sections of the board that Petro is willing to allow blog entries on the main site, as editorials. (Or something to that effect.) However, no one is actually writing editorials, so there's nothing going on.

Personally, I'd nominate TBJ, Kurt, and 227 to do editorials. Show the "big boys" what REAL journalism is!

EDIT: Here's the posting about it: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?p=587220#post587220

ESPN: As reported on TheGangGreen.com, the NY jets have released QB Chad Pennington and replaced him with 2nd year wide receiver, Brad Smith.

The guys getting most of the snaps at DE in the 4-3 are Thomas and Ellis, with DRob at the 3T spot... with a rotation of Kimo and Coleman at the slant nose, but Mangini uses a lot of roatations. Kurt and I don't understand why Pouha is getting any time in the 4-3.

Smith is still getting plenty of reps at WR, and I have to say, he and Stuckey are making more plays than Cotchery and Coles so far. The other guy that is making a lot of plays is Kowelewski, or however it's spelled. In the two minute drills, Pennigton went to him often. He has good hands, good speed for a TE/H Back.

One thing I forgot to mention.... and I was ranting at practice over this yesterday.... Wade Smith is a MAJOR liability when snapping in the shotgun. He has as many bad snaps as good ones, and would be a turnover machine in a real game. I've never seen ANY center, at any level be as God awful at snapping in the shotgun as he is. On Monday he sailed two snaps clear over Clemens' head, and two more Clemens had to jump up for to tip back down to him. Yesterday, the ball was hitting the ground at Clemens' feet, and there were more high and off center snaps to boot. The rest of his game looks OK... but the snapping... ugh.

After the mentioning of Wade Smith's bad snaps, I was actually looking through my binoculars at the next several snaps and, sure enough, a couple of snaps later Smith brushed the inside of his left thigh while snapping it to Clemens. The ball fluttered low without ever touching Clemens' hands and bounced on the ground.

Clemens quickly picked it up on the run while moving to his left to try to make something of the play anyway, but it was too late, so he correctly threw it away on the left sidelines.

Thanks guys. I was looking foward to this report coming into work. I love the sound of a new pass rush. Sorely needed indeed. Hicks is a quandry. I was wondering if you picked up on how the FB's are being utilized or maybe they haven't installed that yet?

Great reports TB and Kurt! I look forward to them.

I must say thou, WOW! I'm stoked about Haynes!

Thanks again for taking the time to share your observations with us.

  11. I actually had to pass on today's afternoon practice to avoid hitting rush hour traffic through the 4-5 city areas i'd be traveling through on my way home(Not to mention the heat).

I'll add a few more comments..

    - I don't think Haynes will be a starter right off the bat. He's a very good 3-4 pass rusher, but is only so-so against the run. I look for him to make his living as a rotational guy and big time pass rusher. Also, I culd be wrong, but I never saw him lining up against Brick. He was lined up primarily against Jones, Bender, and inside against Assorted interior back-ups. But make no mistake, he seemed to be wreaking havoc on every passing play.

    - I think Clemmens will end up being the long term answer at QB..But I think it's important to show patience w/ him. He seems to know the playbook very well, and appears to have improved his arm strength...but as a 2nd year guy, he has typical struggles w/ confidence, holding the ball too long, and avoid deep throws for fear of mistakes. Give him time.

    - I think I was wrong about the depth on this team. It may not be to the elite level to that of SD or the Pats, but we are just a notch below. We appear to have great depth at QB, RB, FB, WR, CB(When Revis finally signs), S, LB,OT, and along the DL.

Based on what i've seen, assuming our young players tontinue to develop and stay healthy, we are a year away from true SB contention. Where are we lacking? I think we need one more starting calibur big body up front on DL, another big body for the interior OL, Another big play LB, and a Tight end to compliment Baker. Other than that, it's just a matter of our young talent continuing to gain experience and more time in the Mangini system.

Glad you made it home safely, buddy. It was nice seeing you again this year... keep up the great posts.

P/S: I think I read where Mangini CANCELLED the practice today anyway, so if this is so, you didn't miss anything. That'll make you feel better!

I agree, I don't see Haynes as a starter, especially in a 3-4, unless it's a 3rd and long with little chance of a running play being called. I think he will be used as a pass rush specialist, until he shows improvement angainst the run... and that would take some time, if it ever happens. Having said that, I think he is easilly the best pure pass rusher on the team, and by a long shot. I can see him getting snaps in the 4-3 if they run it as often during the season as they are at camp. I mean, he has Ellis, Thomas and Coleman in front of him, not to mention Kimo von Oldhoffen. Frankly, I missed the fact that Haynes wasn't beating Ferguson... since some of Hayne's snaps came on the first unit, I ASSumed...

Kowelewski could be an answer at TE.... and depth does look better this year. My biggest concern remains run blocking. I'm with ya on Clemens. Smith sure is intriuging as a QB though. The improvement both Robertsonand Pouha have shown bodes well for the run D.... they may be able to keep helmets off of Vilma this year.

    Cheers Kurt.
Two points of concern from your report,. Is Brick outclassing BT? Why is Ellis so quiet?
I love the hybrid concept. I think that is why we were so succesfull last year , keep 'em guessing. Vilma must be having babies.
Very positive report , thanks alot.
