In an ideal world I'd like a solid vet to come in who can hold down the position for three years at least and some young blood brought in either this coming draft or the one after. I'd put this at the top of the priorities chart. Solidifying the offensive line would solidify Sanchez's play and improve the ground game. Allowing Sanchez to fulfill his potential, whatever that may be, has to be the primary goal. And I know we need pass-rush and safety help as well, but you can't solve everything at once.
Keep hope alive. The Pats will be picking near the bottom after yet another second round exit. Maybe they'll draft another overrated safety. You just can't have enough of those.
This is the thing with offensive lines. It doesn't matter if you have the best 330lb athletes in the league up there if they can't gel and function as a unit. On the flipside, you can have a tight knit unit that will be let down by a horrible player. The Jets are suffering 2 ills on the O-line. The right tackle is a joke, and the rest of the line is inconsistent....sure as heck not a unit. Slauson is not great. Moore is pretty good. If we had a RT who was able to work well together with the other guys but was better than Hunter and around the same talent level as Slauson, it would go a long way toward improving the line. I think the lack of confidence in each other is a major reason why all the guys on the line are not playing as well this year. Brick has given up more sacks than ever and I have seen more than one occasion where he thought he was passing a guy off to Slauson and Slauson wasn't there or when Brick steps inside to pick up a rusher, expecting Slauson to pull out and pick up the wide guy, but they both pick up the same rusher and someone goes free....etc
Dumb thread. Doesn't matter if they're a veteran or rookie as long as they are GOOD. If we drafted Tyron Smith I'm sure you wouldn't be saying this.
If the intent of getting a veteran RT is fill a hole with the hope that the Vlad project works out it's not a bad thought. I'm with KTJF in that the guy has the physical tools to be a probowler. Unfortunately he rides the short bus to practice. If the reason is that they're giving up on Vlad I'd actually rather see them draft a RT early, so long as it's not another project guy.
Tyron Smith has allowed as many sacks this year as Hunter, and gets owned plenty of times on stunts and disguised blitzes. I have the misfortune of having to watch every Cowboys game each week. He's very raw. Anyway, from what I understand there are no initial prospects in this class at the level of Tyron Smith, and even if there were, we wouldn't be in position to draft him. You might as well say that I wouldn't be saying this if we drafted Joe Thomas. Try to be realistic if you're going to attempt to discredit a thread, or you just end up looking like a dope.
If we draft RT early, and stick with that rookie, Wayne Hunter and Hodormir, Mark Sanchez is a dead man. There's no way he'll make it through another full season with speed rushers flying around the right side all day long, and the chances of finding a tackle prospect that can be effective in Callahan's zone scheme immediately are slim. I'm willing to give them time to find a brain donor for Hodormir, but they will NEED to find a veteran stopgap either way, because Moore is not good enough to mask the deficiencies of a bad or inexperienced tackle.
I've never seen him play outside except as the swing man, but his size would be a problem with strongside bull rushers and I just never saw enough from him to believe he'd be an effective starter. Maybe we could use him to get starting pass rushers ejected from games?
Hunter can be cut next year without the Jets being on the hook for any dead-money. So he'll be shown the door. I agree. This draft seems to be stocked fairly nicely with 3-4 linebackers (Burfict and Harris is an inside linebacker combo that can give running backs nightmares, a guy like Jarvis Jones can come here and play outside linebacker for 10 years), and wide-outs. Problems that NEED to be solved, for the good of keeping the defense which is the hallmark of the team strong, and giving Sanchez a young weapon to grow and develop with. These are problems that are historically extremely difficult to solve via free agency.
I wouldn't mind grabbing the Ohio State LT and throwing him at RT, but you make a good point about inexperience putting Sanchez at risk.
Levi Brown of the Arizona Cardinals will be available. I think this would be the perfect scenario. 6-6 324. The guy turns 28 in March, 2012. The guy played Pro Bowl year at RT,....they switched him to left tackle & things didnt work out well. The local news agency out in Arizona doesnt think he is in their future plans. Not too old,.....not too young. Solid experience. Won't be too expensive.
As long as they address the safety position with one of their first 2 picks, I'm OK with choosing between RT, LB or WR with the other.
Once again, someone with a cute avatar in the internet suggests the team correct an obvious deficiency without having a specific remedy in mind.
Wrong again. Nice avatar, but Vladamir Ducasse wasn't drafted last year. But, again, you spent some time on your avatar, so I'm sure you know what you're talking about.
