Did anyone notice if Williams was matched up on Antonio Brown for the entirety of the game or if he was moving around?
My hope is that one just one of these guys we trot out to CB each week can prove worthy the rest of this season. If we can go into the offseason only desperately needing 1 starting CB rather than 2 I will be ecstatic. Milliner could start but can't be relied on until he proves he can stay healthy. Our nickel will also have to be addressed, Wilson will be gone and McDougle hasn't played a snap yet. All I want is for Marcus Williams or whoever else to ball out these last few weeks, earn your 2015 roster spot.
A lot of money? He signed a 1 year contract for 12 mil. We are still that much under the cap. Could have had Revis & Cro back this year had we wanted to pony up the money. But Idiotzik wants to build through the draft. So you draft 12 players and all of 2 make the team. I loved the stat today. First time in history that 5 rookie WRs have more than 500 yards receiving in the first 10 games. And for the Jets and the three receivers they drafted, 0 catches for 0 yards.
You never know. The guy seems to have had a standout career at North Dakota St and has looked at least very solid these past two weeks. Chris Harris of the Broncos (who I really hope is not resigned this offseason) was an UDFA just a few seasons ago and is already one of the top corners in the NFL. They'll go into the offseason with Dee Milliner, Dexter McDougle, Darrin Walls and hopefully Marcus Williams if he continues to play at a high level. Still should bring a big-time FA corner plus another one on Day / Day 3 of the the draft or in free agency. Definitely one of the young/unknown guys to focus on in terms of evaluation for next season along with Aboushi (who just got an honorable mention on PFF's all-star team of the week) and now Jaiquawn Jarrett, but I feel somewhat hopeful that's they've found a player in Williams
Marcus Williams is a CB who gives a 20 yard cushion to one and all--until he is inside his own 10. Then he gives a 15 yard cushion. I think we won the other day because Ben positively sucked. 300 yards passing and 17 lousy points.
The coaching staff (well, Ryan and Thurman) is responsible for that bullshit. Williams is not doing his own thing. Off coverage is fine when up by a couple scores late in games or on 3rd-and-long. Otherwise, it is highly risky and usually dumb. I hate that the coaches are usually not letting the CBs play press man this year. Williams so far looks like a tough cornerback. Letting him play soft is wrong.
He faced whoever Pitt put on the right side, but I wanted to be certain so I rewatched the game and took notes. Williams was at right corner the entire game except for maybe 3 or 4 plays where he backed into a zone and was effectively a safety. He also came out on three goal line plays. Allen was used instead. The Steelers moved around their WRs. In order of frequency these are the six guys Williams faced: Brown, Bryant, Wheaton, Heyward-Bey, Moore, Bell. By my count, Williams allowed 6 catches but one did not count due to penalty. 3 or 4 (would have to rewatch the first again to be sure) were made because of Dennis Thurman's off coverage calls. Williams had no shot to break on the ball and prevent a catch. Williams played off on Bryant inside the red zone. Because it was a slightly longer developing play, Williams was able to break on the ball and deflect it to Jarrett for an interception. Williams did make a bad play late in the game which Gannon pointed out on the telecast. All in all, it was a good game by Williams. I just wish Thurman and Ryan would allow him to bump the receivers at the line and not play soooo much off coverage. I only noticed him bump a receiver once (vs Brown very late in the game). The touchdown to Bryant was poor technique by Adams. He gave Bryant a 7 yard cushion at the line which was fine because it was a 2-score game with a minute and 25 seconds or so to go. Problem was, Adams let Bryant get inside leverage and Landry opted to help out the wrong cornerback. Williams had tight coverage on Brown and did not need help. That touchdown was simply a good play by Roethlisberger and Bryant.
