Oh, I absolutely get caught up in the formations because that's what Bowles does most. Bowles uses more nickel / dime packages than any coach in the league IMO. Because of this, the Jets need the perfect blend of both speed and power.

Bowles wants versatile players that can play both 3-4 and 4-3. 1 game he will run more 3-4 then the 4-3, then the next week he will run more 4-3 then the 3-4. His schematics that week are completely dependent on the match-up. He experimented more with it as the season progressed when he put Demario in as a 4-3 weak-side linebacker, to take advantage of his speed.

Needing an edge rusher doesn't mean they will just run the base 3-4. Nor would that Edge Rusher always stand up in the Bowles defense. Bowles wants an edge rusher that can play in both schemes, and while it may favor more towards a 3-4, he still wants that edge rusher to be able to generate major pressure on a 4 man front.

Jets haven't won jack shit because they've had shitty coaching prior to Bowles and poor execution on both sides of the ball. That has nothing to do with having one of the best defensive lines in the league. You continue to keep that as a strength, and you certainly don't make it a weakness. That's why I like Bowles, he wants to have that flexibility and versatility to run whatever formation he wants, D-line is a strength and right now he's putting those players in the best place to succeed. That's why they rush the passer more than the traditional 3-4 lineman. That's why I am a huge fan of Mo because Mo can play in any scheme effectively. Pair him up with a speed rusher and you'll see chaos on the field.

We are 1 speed rusher and 1 cover linebacker away from having a super-elite defense w/no holes. You want those 2 remaining pieces to play in any scheme, Bowles chooses to put out there that week.

I like the 3-4 defense as it creates plenty of confusion but to me, nothing is more effective then the traditional 4-3 with the ability to rotate / combine speed and power rushers with a linebacker that can go side-line to side-line and a LB that can stop the run and hit the gaps.

If you will go back and re-read my response, I said that the edge rusher needs to function as both an OLB in a 3-4 and DE in a 4-3. Nowhere in any of my posts have I suggested that the Jets should make the DL a weakness, so that's ridiculous! Give me some credit here, man.

Yes, the Jets have had shitty coaching, poor execution, and I would add poor drafting, poor QBing, and poor scheming as well, but the fact remains is that even though that DL is great at stopping the run, they are not even good at rushing the QB. Evern if all those things we listed had been better, the Jets still wouldn't have won jack because they couldn't/can't consistently pressure opposing QBs. All of the top teams have that ability. Look at GB. They've been in the hunt because of Rodgers and Clay Matthews. They can score points and Matthews and a few others can get after opposing QBs causing incompletions, turnovers, and momentum changing sacks at key moments of games. Their D overall is nowhere as good as ours, but they're more successful because they can pressure opposing QBs. Mo has had one very good season rushing the QB. Let's not get carried away and make him something he's not. He may build upon his success this past season and continue to put up similar numbers or that could have been a career year and he could regress.

I think you're starting to sound like Rockinz now with his youthful exuberance and overoptimism. We are more than just 1 speed rusher and 1 cover LB away from having a "super-elite" defense with no holes. Revis is declining. We don't know how Williams (or whoever starts opposite Revis) will play. Gilchrist is good with QBing the secondary, but he's not that good in terms of coverage or being a ballhawk. More than likely either Mo or Snacks won't be on the team in 2016, and possibly both. If they're both still here, then more than likely we'll have no quality depth on the DL as we've had the past several years, and we'll lose other players in order to be able to pay them both. You're getting waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of yourself.

I prefer the 4-3 as well. I don't even like the 3-4 alignment. Never have. What we have is mostly 3-4 personnel however, and we'd need a lot more changes to D personnel to successfully play a 4-3 exclusively or even most of the time, so like it or not, we're stuck with the 3-4 base for the time being.

We have something very special on the defensive line. We are 2 pieces away, but I think certain pieces need to be utilized a little differently [Revis, FS, #2 CB], which I'll mention more in my post in a moment.

You did say, "We haven't won jack shit with them since they've been here". Maybe, I took that the wrong way, but that part of your argument irked me a little bit. They have done their job and more. Sure we need a little more speed, but we made Brady look pretty bad in our last meeting with the Patriots. Another speed rusher and a cover linebacker and I see no weakness.

In regards to Revis - it's time to put him to #2 WR and slot receiver duties. We cannot put Revis on an island anymore against the Watkins and Hopkins. Revis needs to shut down the #2 receiver or the other receiver that gives the biggest threat and allow Marcus Williams with safety help on the top take out the #1 receiver. Marcus is a very capable CB outside [but you cannot do what Bowles did with him last season and that's play slot and safety]. I think him w/ a safety will be good.

In regards to Mo, he has been a 2 time all-pro player. He's had 2 great seasons [2013, and 2015] rushing the passer. Top 3 interior pass-rusher in the entire league. Only I consider Watt and Donald to be better. This is what I meant, by giving the line more credit. Not many players in this league are as good as Wilkerson. Leonard Williams needs to work on his technique in the pass rush department, Sheldon needs more shots at rushing the QB. I believe Mo will still be here, and I don't think losing Snacks will kill the Jets run defense.

Packers defense was good, but I don't think they executed any better than the Jets on the defensive side of the ball. Clay is a HOF talent and same with Peppers. Still, I don't think they were that great in comparison to the Jets. I think we were definitely a better team than the Packers this past season.

I look at linebackers like Darron Lee and Deion Jones in this draft and I see 2 linebackers that can play in both schemes. Inside in the 3-4 and outside on the 4-3.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on how close our D is to being "elite". Yes the DL has done their job and more, and it still hasn't been good enough in stopping the pass. The NFL is a passing league, not a rushing league. Further, there are no elite RBs in the AFC. That was my point. That's why having a great DL is nice, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not as important as it once was. The LBs are much more important. Supposedly, they're faster, can cover and can rush, and can tackle. That was my point with GB. Overall, our D is better than theirs, and perhaps our team in general, but they have been able to achieve more with less because of Rodgers and Matthews. That's how important a great pass-rushing LB is.

So in 1-2 meetings out of how many have we made Brady look pretty bad? Most of the time he's had all day to stand back there and pick us apart. Are you happy with just 1-2 times? I'm sure not.

As far as Wilkerson being a top 3 interior pass-rusher, I doubt it. I can't speak to that because I don't keep up with other teams and players, but I know that many, perhaps most of Wilkerson's snaps are as a DE not as DT, and that doesn't make him an interior pass rusher.

I think it's pointless to go on discussing this. IMO you are so in love with Mo that you're blinded to the realities of the deficiencies of our D and the importance of the LB corps, so we're not ever gonna agree.

Let me apologize for "loving" one of the best 2 way interior players in this league that can line-up anywhere and doesn't cause off the field issues. A player that has been here through the bad and good. I am not blinded by anything, I want to keep our best players. If you want to point at someone being blind, point at those that want Snacks for 8M a season.

I know the importance of each position on the field. That's why I've been looking at linebackers this entire draft. That's why I wanted fast linebackers for the longest time and it should've been addressed seasons ago.

LOL @ the notion that a 3-4 DE isn't an interior pass rusher.

This just isn't true. If you have a weak defensive line, your linebackers are not going to get anything accomplished. No linebacker can be successful with the defensive line being blown back into him every play. It's very difficult to neutralize great defensive line play.

It most certainly is. To say that it isn't shows ignorance of NFL history.

No one said anything about the Jets having a "weak" defensive line. Losing Mo would not make us weak. We'd still have Richardson, Williams and Snacks. For Pete's sake stick to the relevant points and facts, quit trying to change the scenario. Some of you guys really do need to take a course in logic and reasoning.

yes, and in the meantime , Jets put the franchise tag on Mo. They know what the ramifications are if/when a key DL player goes to another team. And yes I do know exactly what a 3-4 defense is to operate on...and that is a stout and very agile front three that will hold the line of scrimmage and put pressure on the QB. And to add, Jets are not operating a true 3-4 anyway as noticed by how they implemented Richardson on certain 3rd down passing plays.

they utilized richardson as their olb because he as a down lineman was the best guy they had at outside linebacker.

its a position that is a huge need. its a very important position in the defense and needs to get addressed.

I never said the defensive line would be weak if we lost Mo. Don't put words in my mouth. You said the linebacking corps is more important than the defensive line. I simply stated a difference in opinion. The defensive line is more important than the linebacking corps.

ROFLMAO!!! Dude, this is what you said (bolding mine):

I don't put words in others's mouths. I never mentioned the word "weak" until you did. Your mentioning it in response to me suggested that our DL would become weak if we trade Mo away. If you can't understand that, then you need to take a course in English. You shouldn't accuse others of doing things that you yourself did when you're obviously too lazy to scan back up a couple of posts and doublecheck what you yourself said.

I don't think you're understanding that I'm not even arguing about the Jets situation. I just don't believe a linebacking corps is more important than a strong defensive line? Even in a 3-4. You're the one making suggestions.

    But attacking people is nice.

That's fine that you don't believe a LB corps is more important than a strong defensive line. That's what makes the board interesting. What I objected to is your putting words in my mouth and then turning around and accusing me of it. I was talking about the Jets situation and 3-4 defenses in general.

I didn't attack you. If I had, believe me, you'd know it. My comment wasn't personal. I just stated a fact about how our language and logic, rational discourse work.

Demario Davis is extremely athletic and fast, but so is my dog, and I think my dog would be just as effective trying to cover on passing downs as Davis. Good riddance.
