Roger Clemens Says 20 Percent Chance for Return didnt wana start a new thread, so i figure it relates most to the yankees Roger Clemens Says 20 Percent Chance for Return HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens told FOX 26 Sports on Thursday there is only a 20 percent chance he will play in the 2007 season. "Koby asked me last night when we were working out, he was doing more of the workout than I was. I still told him 80-20 that I wasn't going to play. The teams that are involved, I think they've got really good clubs that are together, and if somebody stubs their toe and my phone rings in May I might have to think about it," Clemens told FOX 26 Sports. The 7-time Cy Young Award-winner said he's not trying to cause any trouble for the teams that may want him or the game's fans. "I find it comical. We get little notes at my foundation about people saying they wish I would make up mind and decide because I am leaving people hanging. I'm not leaving anybody hanging. I don't want to play," said Clemens. On Thursday night, Clemens took part in the grand opening of the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza, which houses the Roger Clemens Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance. "My participation and my hands on, on this project here with Memorial Hermann is going to supersede my playing career," he said. Clemens has won two more Cy Young Awards than any other pitcher, and he is one of just four pitchers to surpass 4,000 strikeouts. He started his career at the Boston Red Sox where he played 13 seasons. He was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the New York Yankees for the 1999 season, where he had his first World Series success. Clemens has pitched for the Astros since 2004.
My brother made a comment to me about Bernie today. I had to actually agree with him. If Bernie earned a roster spot, and it pushed out Mienxilplix, I'd actually be happy to see Bernie return. Jeter always the diplomat. Clemens isn't returning. Unless someone throws a huge paycheck at him. I don't want the Yankees to be the one to do that. Whelan sounds interesting. I don't recall too many catchers changing into pitchers. Might make for an interesting middle relief man. Joe's impressed with Villone? What, that the guy can even move his arm after last year? Yeah Joe, me too. If Farnsworth can develop a decent, not even great, but decent, offspeed pitch, he's going to be deadly. If Hughes is really as good as his hype, I have to agree. I don't care if he calls himself Clark, and shows up in red and blue tights.
Mientkiewicz is the only 1B on the roster with a guaranteed contract (counting Giambi as a DH), so Bernie would be pushing the right handed platoon out, Phillips/Phelps. Given Doug's great defense and somewhat underrated offensive ability, I'm glad that's the case. If Torre came out tomorrow and said no matter what, regardless of injury or other circumstance, Bernie wouldn't see one single inning in the outfield this year, I would have no problem with him coming back. He could DH when there's a tough lefty in the lineup, Giambi plays 1B and Mientkiewicz sits. There's also the likelihood of Giambi going on the DL atleast once, during which Bernie could DH. But I don't trust Torre to keep him away from the OF.
Clemens is one of the biggest douche bags I have seen in all of my years following sports. "I don't want to play".. but I'm 20/80. You know what Rog... go fuck yourself you egomaniac! I'm surprised you didn't hit the Astros up for a second retirement ceremony. I mean this is the same jack ass that says he’ll snub the Baseball Hall of Fame if they don’t do what he wants…. He doesn’t even play a full season anymore! I hope he comes back… and I hope he get’s smoked in the AL so we don’t have this stupid soap opera going on any longer. I hope his teammates call him out for being over the hill and not committed to the team, and I hope the finally catch him for using juice because we all know he’s been doing it for years. I don't even wish the A-hole on the Yankees.
Yeah, me neither. But is Mienfhjdhfjd that good? I thought he was just average, but truth be told, I am going more on he said, she said at this point with him. Offensively, if he was going to get regular at-bats, I'd like to have Bernie around. But as a probable once a week outfielder, and a non-player otherwise, we get the worst of both worlds. You know how I feel about him defensively, and he's the type of player that needs at-bats to get into a groove and keep it consistent. Unless, like you said, Giambi goes out for a stretch, then Bernie is a quality option at DH. On most other teams in the AL, he'd be a DH for another 3 or 4 years. But unless he's taking the spot of someone like Pavano, I don't want him ruining a roster spot for a pitcher, which is what he'd be doing.
For a few years with Minnesota, he was a good offensive player. The last few years, he's been below average with Boston, same with the Mets, and average with KC. He's definitely better than Phillips, and of course he has the key factor: he's still one of the best defensive 1B in the game.
Well, if that's the case, I just may learn to like the guy. I can deal with a sub-par offensive output if a guy can make big outs. It's not like the lineup is suffering for hits. It'll be weird though. For the first time in as long as I can remember, we'll have a first baseman that doesn't hit. Let's see if Donnie can work some of his magic with the guy.
I think it's very nice of Willie to show the Mets and their fans what a World Series ring looks like:grin:
And in off the field news, the Times reports this morning that Swindal was on his way to spend the night on his boat in st. pete when he was stopped. Stopped 40 blocks from the docks, in front of a bail bondsman's shop next to a Laundrymat, that is. What do you think, coke or hookers?
