Look, I said it'd be nice to have HFA. But you seem to be treating this as though if they win it, they might have a chance against the Angels, but if they don't, they're obviously inexorably doomed because of four games this year, and games in years past. And forgive me for calling a spade a spade, but that's just d-u-m-b, dumb.

I don't think these games are that big of a deal. I don't think you see these matchups in the playoffs. I don't think Matsui sits. I don't think Bruney and Albaladejo are given a chance to turn a one-run game into a three run game. Girardi's hook will come much more quickly. And we've all seen a few previews of how Fuentes will do come October.

Do me a favor. Please explain how I am cherry picking. Go on. Do it. Show me.

Ten bucks says you can't. (Because I'm not.)

    Baseball is not football!

Strategy, approach, etc... all pale in comparison to the talent of the individual players when you're talking about baseball. Not so in football.

Come on, man. You're smart enough to know this.

I read the football pages, mostly for news/updates. Rarely post. Too cluttered up there. No conversation. It's like watching fifty Dons consume a bottle of whiskey each and then yell at each other, with interesting news tidbits in between.

Telling me that I know better than "everybody in the sports world" when their job is not to analyze, but to create controversy and sell ads/papers isn't a sarcastic jab. It's the truth.

Some people buy into their tripe (i.e. you) without question. Good for you.

I prefer to look at it on my own. Considering the Yanks still have the best record in baseball, a good chance of keeping it, and aren't likely to live or die by what the ESPN bozos think about Chamberlain's outlook, I'm okay with it.

Here's a big difference between you and me. You think in black and white and leave zero room for nuance. Example: I'm not screaming about how the sky is falling, or thinking that Chamberlain is washed up, so obviously (in your opinion) I must think everything is A-OK and that Chamberlain is a Cy Young contender. No, Don. There are plenty of shades of gray in between what you think (the worst) and what you like to pretend that I think (that everything is awesome). It's called reality.

By the way, Don, care to rethink your earlier post about the Yanks coasting in September? Come on. Man up. Admit you had no idea what you're talking about. Because that's a perfect example of what I referenced above. I'm not saying the Yanks are playing awesome now. I'm not saying that I don't want them to play better. But the idea that they NEED to play .700 ball in order to do well in the playoffs... the idea that they had been taking September off in recent seasons... these ideas are not supported by facts.

A hit by Posada would make me feel nice right here.

Posada flies out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

Kay was praising Mathis for being a good defensive catcher based on a play where he did a poor job blocking the pitch.

Pitch in the dirt, and he tried to awkwardly backhand it instead of blocking it with his body. He was lucky, as the pitch bounced off his glove and stayed in front of him.

Kay then began to drool all over him. Terrible technique on that play.

Gardner robs Abreu of a single.

Royals up 5-1 on the Red Sox after 7 and a half. Boston has three outs left.

Jesus Christ, swing at strikes! He throws garbage out of the zone, twice, and Jeter chases both.

Boston loses again, and they're not catching the Yankees.

Texas must really be kicking themselves. They could've caught them.

a-roid juices one into the cave in centerfield.

He also stood there and admired it. Poor form.

I wish there were more professionals in baseball who didn't admire their hits every time they think they hit a home run.

Did A-Rod stand and admire it? Or did he just hit it so hard that it distorted time?

    And now Posada. Sweet.

Maybe if they win tonight, it'll shut up all the worry warts around here.

posada breaks it open with the second two run homer of the inning.
The Angels haven't been able to hit Gaudin tonight, so I don't know if they'll be able to get back into this one.

not sure kay realizes, but the tagging of first base was irrelevant. there were two outs.

very quick reflexes displayed by Morales. Would've been even more impressive had there not been two outs, because his momentum carried him to the bag.

I didn't think it was a liner. I thought he caught it on a hop.

Disagreed. When you hit a pitch that hard you don't have to fly out of the box. He did good.

    Gaudin looks good.

Of course you don't have to. Professionals run out of the box, though. Admiring your shot is amateurish. That's what Manny does.

The Yankees will clinch a playoff spot tonight.

Eight half innings thus far, and all four runs have come in one of them.

    Speaking of professional:

Spongetech, which sponsors my softball team, has an ad on the outfield fence that states that it's "Publicly tra ed".

Matsui homers. Angels are getting ready to eliminate themselves from a chance at home field.

if there's a fourth starter, it has to be Gaudin. He's been better than Mitre and much better than Joba.

Gaudin goes 4 and 2/3 and does not get the win.

Vlad is not the player he once was. The Angels shouldn't resign him.

Cappy, you're right. That ball did hit the ground. I missed that one.

Gaudin took too long to go back up home plate on that RBI single, although it didn't end up mattering because of Damon's arm.
